Superhero movies don't seem to be going away anytime soon. Let's take a look back at the awkward years of comic book characters being brought to the silver screen with three notorious comic adaptation failures, including the infamous, never-officially-released Fantastic Four movie produced by Roger Corman.

Wikipedia has more on the Fantastic Four film. They didn't intend to release it when they started, but by the end they realized that they actually had something worth releasing. Marvel, though, got worried that the film would kill the franchise, and offered to pay a few million dollars to buy the film so that they could destroy all copies of it.

From what I heard in the documentary about the Roger Corman Fantastic 4 is that the movie was supposed to be released but, at some point, a major studio wanted to make a big budget version of the movie but only if the Coremen one was shelved. By this point, it was already in post production.

I honestly thought one of the most brilliant ideas of the first Marvel Captain America was that USO tour that gave him a reason to be wearing that outfit.

I actually quite liked the later merged USO costume with standard issue gear in that movie too. The right mix between classic costume and realism, because it's a mashup in universe, not some tactical gear with random bright colors or embellishments on it. It feels like it would actually be a thing.

@@nicholascage3400 Likewise. However, it went downhill for me after that. I hate that weird ab ribbing/trim they kept giving him in Winter Soldier onwards. I was glad when he stole the old suit from the museum, except for my concern that it was just a replica lacking any actual real protection.

Filming in Yugoslavia was infamously cheap in the 1980s. Conan the Barbarian was nearly made there, but the political situation was restless after Tito died, so they filmed in Spain instead. Plus, OF COURSE they wanted an excuse to film in Slovenia. It's ridiculously beautiful and fun there.

Upon finishing this episode, I was so intrigued I went out and immediately found the Fantastic Four film online. And wow. I'm amazed by it honestly. One of the most incredible parts was that they managed such capable sound mixing and set design on such a low budget. You can hear extras talking in the background, people getting in and out of elevators, the music is genuinely well done and matches the tone of the scene perfectly. Dr. Reid's lab actually looks like a crazy science lab. I was immediately invested in the characters. I am not really a superhero movie fan. In fact, I am someone who generally HATES superhero movies. I hate the overedited, high gloss of modern superhero movies. They actually hurt my eyes, but as a kid I actually WAS interested in that 2000s Fantastic Four movie. This movie is honestly BETTER. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well paced, competently acted (many times truly WELL acted), decent cinematography, good lighting and shots, interesting characters and plot. Nothing not to like. In the 2000s FF, Johnny was such a flat character. In this movie, I know they criticize Johnny's acting ability but one scene really did a great job painting who Johnny was. They just discover they have powers, Johnny opens his hands and is overwhelmed by the power and his capacity for evil (you see the fire transform in his hands, foreboding laughter and music), then quickly closes his hands and says, "God help us." That is a GOOD line. And great characterization. We learn immediately Johnny is the one we've gotta keep our eye on. Truly an amazing scene for a movie that wasn't even supposed to be released.

Say what you want about Corman's Fantastic Four, it's the only version of the Reed / Sue relationship that makes any kind of sense. Reed was the "cute college student" that a 14-year-old Sue fantasized about someday marrying because he just happened to live in the Storm family's spare room. They aren't together because they're really suited to each other, but because Sue grew up playing house with him (at least in her head). Then they just hooked up when they were older. Reed is genuinely more interested in science than Sue, and Sue is genuinely okay with that. Their courtship has literally never been done better in any other format, including the comics.

Here's the story of Roger Corman's Fantastic Four. The movie was made to be released. In 1993 on a trip to Puerto Rico, Avi Arad (Marvel executive) heard about the excitement for the movie, and this being his first time hearing about it feared that the low budget nature of the film would damage the brand. He proceeded to buy the film for a few million in cash and ordered that all prints be destroyed without ever actually watching it. Basically, Marvel fucked up. And thankfully they managed to fuck up at fucking up and a copy survived.

So Avi Arad not only managed to kill two different film versions of Spider-man but also one version of the Fantastic Four...and arguably the best outing the Fantastic Four had on screen. I didn’t think I could hate him any more for killing the Sam Raimi Spider-Man franchise but now I do.

Out of all the older comments on here you got it right the most. After seeing the Doomed! documentary it hurt to know how the film got killed so easily. It especially stung to learn some of the cast actually forked out their own money(!!!) to advertise the film because they actually believed in the project taking off. That was one fact that solidly showed this team cared, no matter how dirty they got did in the end.

Genuinely, that scene where Mr. Fantastic tries to explain the Fantastic 4's super powers based on their personalities... that actor (Alex Hyde-White, yes I did Google his credit) sells his role as Reed Richards better than any live-action actor to date, and that's... well okay, he doesn't have that much competition, but he's genuinely _fantastic_ (no pun intended) in that moment, with a bit more budget, and just the tiniest bit of confidence, there's no reason that couldn't have been a really good Fantastic Four film.

1. Er...ok? I don't know if gender is relevant to this discussion. 2. That's a matter of opinion....some Jews consider someone "jewish" by birth, following down on the mothers' line. If "Race" exists, then this is a perfect example of such a thing...but then, you sound like a fucking idiot....either you know this already (and are being intellectually dishonest) or you're a fucking dumbass. As to "Jews controlling things" - what a fucking loser. I assume you're Muslim - because that's a religion that prays on ignorance - unfortunately for you and your propaganda, on these issues I am not.

Roger Corman's Fantastic 4 - Budget of $1 million, actually entertaining and compellingly acted, for all its B-movie-ness. 2015 Fantastic 4 - Budget of $120 million, a garbled, dull mess of gritty nonsensicality and awful pacing. In the Razzies it was nominated Worst Picture, Director, Screenplay, Prequel/Remake/Rip-Off/Sequel and Worst Combo. How?! How is this possible?! The Roger Corman wasn't even supposed to be seen! To be "fair" to the writers of the Supergirl movie, the comics often were even worse in terms of pandering to what middle-aged men thought girls wanted. For example, Comet the Wonder Horse. "Girls like horses, right? Well, then Supergirl should have a super horse!" seems to be the entire line of thinking, and it got _weird._ Comet was a centaur cursed to become a full horse, but with superpowers...and he was in love with Supergirl. Supergirl can, of course fly, and has no need to ride even a super-powered horse, but she rides him anyway. So Supergirl is straddling a super-horse for no reason other than because she likes it, and said horse wants to bone her.

I'm sure Supergirl was made to appeal to little girls and they just thought little girls were motivated by romantic dreams and would relate more to this than Superman. I was 11 when it came out and never saw it but my friend was utterly obsessed with it. I was a big fan of the WonderWoman TV series as a kid, but the parts that intrigued me the most were her costume and her romantic interests. When I watched shows about women I was interested in the glamour, when I watched shows about men I was interested in heroism and action. I loved Superman, but my only interest in Lois Lane was her beauty and romantic relationship with Clark, her spunk didn't interest me. Maybe it was all just conditioning by the media I consumed, but it's just how it was and I don't really feel like I missed out on anything.

I loved “Supergirl” when I was a kid. I was too young for it to offend me, I didn’t even realize it sucked. I liked it because it was a girl superhero. I also loved the “Wonder Woman” TV show for the same reason. I also have to agree about Lois, I was most interested in her romance with Superman than her as a reporter.

So the German company that owned the rights to "Fantastic Four" in 1994 was Constantin Film. Constantin also produced the 2005 version and the Silver Surfer sequel -- Fox merely coproduced it and handled distribution. Constantin has held the rights to the property for over 20 years now, I think even they know it's kind of a dead end and the characters just don't work with the modern zeitgeist, they just produce the bare minimum number of pictures in order to keep the rights from reverting to Marvel-Disney-LucasCo. Constantin film is a relatively large German production company that produces a lot of domestic (to Germany) content and occasionally makes some larger international co-pros: the "Three Musketeers" film a couple years ago was one of theirs, as was "Downfall," "The Need for Speed," and a lot of Paul W.S. Anderson's films, like the "Resident Evil" franchise and the upcoming "Pompeii."

I still like the fantastic four idea in our age. Identity crisis, looking for your place in life, burnout or how the newest entry tried it as some kind of the fly movie before it was completely remade. I think the F4 still has potential as a movie, but you have to give it to a director with a vision, maybe something like Logan, not like the plotline, but more like what if this happened in a "real"setting where everybody can choose how to live with greyareas and not being a hero, heroes dieing without any rhyme or reason etc
