In the UK, I've used Triple QX 10w40 and Millers Trident 10w40 based on recommendations from the owners club. Also Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 GL4 in the gearbox and Fuchs Titan Race Syn 5 75W90 GL5 in the rear diff. Lastly, Castrol Power 1 Racing 2T as pre-mix. All the above are recommended in the oil 101 thread on the owners club and are readily available on eBay etc. Hope this helps somebody looking to change all their fluids.

The RX8 user manual recommends 5w-20 SL or ILSAC GF-3 oil, or mazda motor oil synthe-renesis 0w-30 according to the manual it is normal for it to consume oil and that is why it should be checked frequently and the oil should be changed every 5000 km or 3000 miles

Hey madness. My 2 cents here on the oil viscosity I have experienced after 3 years. My car: 2009 RX8 R3 That's a series 2 engine with 3 oil injectors vs the series 1 with only 2 injectors. Little info of where I live: summer time temps can reach 115F and cool as 65F. Winter temps can drop as low as -20F and as warm as 60F. Bare in mind that 115 and -20 are extreme situations that occur only once every 2 or 3 years but can last for a few weeks at a time on occasions. Typically summer highs are 105F and winter lows are -5. In summer I first started with 5w-20 as stated in the owner book. I consumed approximately 1 quart every 1200 miles. Good consumption rate, poor lubrication though. Went to 5w-30 which yeilded a consumption rate of approximately 1 quart every 1800 miles again acceptable consumption and gave moderate amount of lubrication. Startups were uneffected, high rpm runs were smoother but a hair more sluggish from the thicker oil. Stepped up to 10w-30 and oil consumption went to 1 quart every 2000miles. the startups took one extra turn over so 3 turn overs instead of 2 which isn't a big deal still less than 5 seconds. High rpm wasnt changed from the 5w-30. Tried to step up again to 10w-40 which gave an oil consumption of 1 quart every 4500 miles. That's right it cut consumption to less than half. Again unchanged on start up from previous step but high rpm was noticeably bogged down to the point I was worried I had lost compression. My injectors were starving getting nearly no oil into the engine. Winter time: The results were nearly the same except back one step for each result... 10w-30 was the start of starving the engine even though it wasn't as bad it still took approximately 3300 miles to use 1 quart. In summary if you have weather similar to either of my patterns I would suggest 10w-30 for the hot times and 5w-30 for the cold times. I change my oils weight after the first solid 2 weeks of weather change.
@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! those are some interesting stats there. Makes sense that the thinner oil gets pumped more, than the thicker one. Of course you have to also take into account driving habits, but i presume you kept the same rpm style are you did with the thinner oils. I also had subscribers write to me that their car is very sluggish from using thicker oils like 15w40 or 10w40 in really cold winters, where they've shoud have been using 5w30. I can't say more because i don't have any first hand experience with thicker oils. I'll switch to the 10w30 in the next months before summer starts. At the end of the season i'll be able to give some feedback about it. But since i have a sohn adapter i don't run the risk of starving the oil injectors, as they inject light 2 stroke oil, which is perfect. I guess one of the rotary experts might be able to give a better reply from their experience. Cheers!

Mineral Oils are called "Conventional" here in the States, for those wondering. Great vid as per usual ;) I have been using 5w20 all year round on my RX-8 for about 2.5 years. Mostly because I don't put on a lot of miles, so I'd have trouble switching oil viscosity per season here... I might actually consider 10w40 though... MPG will go down from what I hear :/

Same here. Been using 5w30 for the same amount of time as you did. I'm gonna switch to 10w30/10w40 in the next months before summer starts. Regarding the famous rotary engine tuner "RE Amemiya", the "RE" part is pronounced as 2 English letters "R" and "E" instead of "re", because they stand for "Rotary Engine"; and the leading "i" of "Idenmitsu" is pronounced as "e" not "i" because it's Japanese. Just my 2 cents.

My mates are running synthetic oil with no issue, dang oil is like religion in the rotary community, or gambling I can say. My first mate is running RX8 turbo with OMP, same with second one but without turbo, both 10W-40. Yeah mineral oil is for the safe side, but synthetics.... Thanks for the tips!
@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
The running with no issues part is covered in the Q&A, if you're interested in the answer from rotary shops. If you have the money get a BRZ/GT86. RWD, good fuel economy, you dont' really buy a sports car for the rear seats, so you have to get used to it. The rx8 will cost less, but consume more fuel, at least 2x as much. So it's up to you and what kind of a budget you are ready to spend. (rx8 maintenence is super easy, and not that expensive)

@Kamal-sj7it6 жыл бұрын
Hi I read on rx8club that the sohn adapter prevents certain parts of the engine from receiving lubrication
@Snoopi256 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you read, but basically, the purpose of the Sohn Adapter is to feed 2-stroke oil into the engine via the OMP. The OMP feeds regular 4-stroke oil from your oil pan into the engine combustion chamber. That's how Mazda designed it, but there are some flaws, as that oil that is being injected is usually dirty or just the sheer fact that 2-stroke burns better than 4-stroke. The reason the Sohn Adapter may not be a perfect solution to the Apex seal lubrication, is because it still operates based on the OMP. So it injects the 2-stroke oil only when the OMP is doing its job, which is above 4k-4.5k RPM. So you are still starving the apex seals of oil below that RPM. The reason we premix 2-stroke with our gas, is so that there is oil to lubricate the Apex seals at all RPM ranges. Don't get me wrong, the Sohn Adapter is a great thing, definitely better than leaving the car stock as it is, but it still does not address the issue fully. If you want, you can go ahead and get it installed, but I would consider premixing instead, or along with, the Sohn Adapter. Just keep in mind, that if you have the Sohn Adapter installed, you will have to premix less. For example: without the Sohn Adapter, I premix 1oz of 2-stroke per 1 gallon of gas for my daily driving. With the Sohn Adapter installed, you would probably only need to premix 0.5 oz per 1 gallon of gas, if you choose to go this route. People can feel free to correct me on what I stated above, but as far as me and my RX-8, I'm just premixing 1oz of 2-stroke per 1 gal of gas, no Sohn Adapter.
@Flyingdutchy336 жыл бұрын
nonsense, it simply changes where the OMP gets its oil from.

@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
having a sohn adapter is a insane advantage, as you are not restricted by any oil and you inject clean 2 stroke to burn & lubricate seals. 15w40 is a good choice if you race a lot and live in a relatively hot climate. Since it's a bit thicker it wont injected as good as lets say 10w30 or 10w40 but it will get injected. If it's winter then i wouldn't use it. using 20w50 without sohn adapter will starve your oil injectors. So if you're not planning on installing a sohn adapter and want to play it safe, stay 10w30 idemitsu or 10w40 :)

@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the club :) Apex seal replacement ranges from 1800 to 2800€. it's best to let a professional rotary mechanic do it, as you have to dismantle the whole engine and inspect it for wear. Once you know the level of wear, you have an idea of what needs to be replaced and what can be reused. On a side note, some people prefer to buy a rebuilt engine and swap it with the current one. Cheaper & faster. cost around 1000€ - 1500€

You can run thicker oils in summer and less thicker in winter. That's a good combo. 10w30 is a great all around oil.

Hey man. Having some major issues out of my Rx8. When I'm driving and put it in neutral it turns off. Changed the spark plugs but not the wires nor coils. Could that be my issue??
@jairoumana45696 жыл бұрын
Dwayne Jr Try changing your wires and coils as well. It might be that your coils are shot and if that's the case might as well change the wires while you're at it. Also try checking your battery and alternator. If those are good, check your MAF sensor and Eccentric shaft position sensor. Clean them off as well as any other semsors and connections and that might help. Look for any leaks in the intake system. Usually found around the accordion tubing on your intake as well as the three vaccuum hoses connected to it. Finally check your air filter and throttle body. Sometimes the filter is gunked up or throttle body is stuck. A lot of people had your same issue, including myself, and checking all of those things usually helped solve the problem. If you've done all of those things and still have issues while idling try getting a compression test to see how the engine is working. Hopefully that baby is healthy and it's just the little things that are preventing it from staying on. Best of luck!

amsoil is by some the best other saying idemitsu..there is also here some engines with and without amsoil but it might be advertising..mildrens.com.au/articles/best-oil-for-your-mazda-rx8/ yes its hard to find in europe..but i can find it about at 11 euros..i live in greece..compare to the very expensive idemitsu essex rotary are very good but prices are 10 years back..when the rx8 cost about 40.000 euros..iam an owner from then... keep the good work..
@evielcastroazamar21376 жыл бұрын
If thicker is better, and considering a Sohn adapter is in place, I would prefer the Motul sport 5w-50. Most of the bearing's wear out occurs during start up, and while the engine is still cold, that's why you would need the lower "5w" value so that the oil can start flowing asap when cranking the engine and as the engine heats up. And the thicker side "50" would be of benefit when the engine has reached the operating temperature.
@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
That was also my first choice,, as i have used mobil 1 peak 5w50 on my previous car. Sadly i can't tell you more than what i said in the video. I'll try and ask the 2 rotary shops to give a more accurate explanation about it. Cheers!
@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
I've asked them and here's the answer: Engine doesn’t flow ASAP. There is a thermal pellet that doesn’t allow flow until warm. Replace it with aftermarket and it fixes that.
@evielcastroazamar21376 жыл бұрын
What I mentioned has to do with the bearings. Oil WILL flow to the bearings but not to the rotors when motor is cold. Due to insufficient oil flow to the bearings on cold temperatures engines need to be rebuilt due to bearings failure. Check the following Link from Atkins Rotary for reference. www.atkinsrotary.com/store/86-11-Rx7-and-Rx8-Atkins-Thermal-Pellet-ARE50.html
@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
His mistake, you are correct the oil flow to the bearings. 50w would benefit operating temperature. 5w and 10w start flowing at the same time but 5w get there a fraction of a second before 10w, but will be too thin until the car warms up. On the other side, thicker oils 10w stick to bearings for a longer period, thus reducing dry start damage and providing better protection while warming up. 5w woud be far better off in colder weathers, where its viscosity would be optimal. Dry starts are very short on rx8's engine, they are more of an issue in piston engines, cause oil takes more time to reach. eshafts and bearings last over 100k miles. This is what i got :)

Every 5,000KM? My maintenance schedule (Schedule 2 for Canada) calls for changes every 8,000KM.
@Snoopi256 жыл бұрын
Do you use conventional/mineral oil or synthetic? For conventional, oil changes should happen every 2,500 - 3,000 miles (whatever that is in KM, a few less than 5,000) no questions asked. The oil can get very dirty very quickly in some RX-8s, and pumping that stuff into the combustion chamber via the OMP when the RPM goes up there, is probably not a great idea. Not to mention other factors that could be causing harm if the oil sits in the engine for too many miles. For Synthetic, I'm assuming it would be 5,000 miles, but I don't know, I don't use synthetic.
@Drivenbymadness6 жыл бұрын
5000 km is reccommended, 8000km is the maximum you should wait.
@lukeberry946 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the video, however the information in this one isn't on point. Having gotten to know a mechanic that builds rotary engines for customers all over the world and working with Mazda and Ianetti, I've learned that the best oil, if your environment doesn't get over 50 degrees Celsius, is penrite 5W30 mineral oil. You should never run a synthetic oil that has not been specially designed for rotary engines and these oils are not commonly available. The reason you shouldn't use synthetic is actually because that inside engine are some soft rubber seals and control rings that actually get eroded by petroleum based compounds, which are what most of these are made of. If you have a SOHN adapter, you should be running a thin mineral oil in the engine that won't boil, such as 5W30, and a high performance 2 stroke oil in the external reservoir for the SOHN adapter such as the Mobil 1 gold racing 2T or the Motul 800 2T. These are what are recommended for use after hundreds of hours of race testing, so if you want a street car that will always perform, use 5W30 in the sump, get a SOHN adapter and use a high performance 2 stroke oil for the combustion chamber. And if you never want your engine to die, combine this with Ianetti ceramic apex seals.

I just bought my 1st RX8. 2009 Grand Touring with the MT and 73K Miles. 2nd Gen with an Oil Cap that says 5W-20 and 100% Synthetic according to the Mazda Owner's Manual. Then I start reading and before I know it the History of the Rotary and Rev Rotary and all the other SMEs leads me to certain conclusions. 1. I personally have NO intentions of installing a Sohn Adapter after removing the Oil Metering Pump which happens to be connected to the 6 Oil Injector Nozzles (4 for the Gen 1 Engines). Why? I don't consider myself smarter than the Mazda Wankel engine Engineering Team. However, I do completely agree that 100% Synthetic Oil is BAD for a Rotary Engine simply because it doesn't BURN very well and we need a Hydrocarbon to BURN Clean after doing it's primary job of lubricating the Apex and Side Seals. Semi Synthetic Oils in America are 50% Conventional and 50% Synthetic. 10W-40 Semi Synthetic High Mileage Valvoliine. Castrol. or any other Brand meeting our API Specs should work fine according to the Experts over at Rev Rotary, RAD, and Yourself according to your chart. I fully intend to keep my '09 RX8 GT MT in an OEM Stock Condition. No Racing Planned. No Drifting Planned. Just spirited Sports Car Driving in America. Mazda, as well as all the other Manufacturers, have been told that 5W20 is the NEW Gold Standard for Energy Efficiency and Lubrication in almost ALL of our automotive ICEs. Really? I was shopping at Walmart 2 days ago and ALL of the Engine Oil was 5W-20. Seriously. You have to either order the Semi Synthetic/Blended 10W-40 Online, or find it at some of the Chain Parts Stores like AutoZone or NAPA or O'Rileys. I honestly think that given the Oil Consumption rate and OEM OMP Systems working fine that the 10W40 Semi Synthetic will work fine here in NW Florida. Regularly Checking and Changing the Oil and Filter is just as critical in every aspect. Of course I'm just the FNG so what do I know. Great Video....Job Well Done and a sincere Thank You from America. JP
