I highly recommend the san juan mountains of southwestern Colorado. Anywhere near Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, etc.. i used to camp in Cunningham gulch just outside of Silverton, co. Just past the old one hundred mine. Beautiful country!

Hope you figured out in advance that you have to get tickets in advance and they sell out quick. I haven't been since I was a kid and I didn't know about the tickets. We still went with the kids but didn't get to go ON any sites - only view from a distance.

Please note, gates are closed at Still Water pass. Fires have burned a lot of it and only a few campsites before the gate are available but not very pleasant.

... that we know of yet! You might poke around to see if there is National Forest or BLM in the area. Campendium supporters (if you're one, thanks!) have access to BLM/NFS overlays to help you scout.
