Visiting pittsburgh next month to check out the neighborhoods and get a feel for the area. Looking to make a move from Chicago. Walkability is definately a must. I do not want to live in some car dependent suburbia full of strip malls and chain restaurants. I hear Pittsburgh has plenty of walkable neighborhoods just gotta learn where they are. Hopefully we can buy our first home there by spring.

You can find some great older neighborhoods in Monroeville. I used to live in the Turnpike Gardens neighborhood. Most of the homes were built in the 1950’s plastered walls and hardwood floors. I loved it there but I moved out of State to be near family.

I love Turnpike Gardens. I have sold several homes in that area.

We want to retire to Pittsburgh in two years. I have relatives in Carrick and Brookline. Our budget for house would (ideally) be around $150k. We live in Florida now - and currently the house we own is worth around $200k, this would allow us to sell this home, buy another one outright, and have a bit of retirement nest egg. My main concern is the condition of these houses. We'd need them to be as sturdy as possible, able to pass a rigorous home inspection. Is that possible with our budget? Or do the houses in this price range need a lot of restoration?

Today, you would have trouble finding something at 150 that didn't need a lot of work (especially in Allegheny County). Perhaps if you went into one of the outlying counties it is possible but still difficult. In two years (as homes continue to appreciate in a low inventory environment), I believe it will be almost impossible.

If someone wanted to buy and rent out one of the homes around 200k in some of the areas you mentioned, where would you recommend and what type of rent would they get on average?

It would depend on the condition of the property and any bonus amenities (garage, finished basement, walkable, close to public transportation, etc.) but in most cases $1250-$1750.
