Why anyone would retire to Dumfries is beyond me!

Close to the border to make a quick getaway? More seriously, no - Dumfries itself wouldn’t be top of my list either, but the Galloway and south coast towns have a real charm, are largely untouched by large scale tourism and the hinterland is beautiful.

Wouldn't leave Edinburgh. Lived in the Highlands but as you get older, you need good hospitals nearby. Unless you live near Raigmore hospital in Inverness, you're done up there. Young people only.

The thing is that many people as they get on have health conditions that mean they are best placed to retire somewhere where they can receive the best specialist care. I’m not retirement age, but I came to appreciate this factor when I got cancer. Now, I would be very reluctant to give up being near a centre of excellence for cancer care, which in Scotland means Edinburgh, Glasgow and possibly Dundee. It feels safer to stay somewhere that can care for me if I need it.

Aye but when you retire you’re looking for a slower pace big cities are full of tourists & students there’s so munch more to Scotland than Edinburgh. There’s many areas throughout the country that are tranquil with beautiful scenery also.

Edinburgh is like any other city, yes it has its lovely spots, but it's a city with loads of tourists. Glasgow is equally as beautiful! Though, yeah, I'm happy that I can get to Edinburgh in less than 40 mins via train or car.

@@sandersson2813 you are kidding, right? Ever looked up in the city centre, never been to any of the numerous green spaces, the Uni, Kelvingrove, and even some of the older urban areas have their attraction too. Granted, it's not the postcard that's Edinburgh from certain views...but have you walked the Royal Mile recently? There's also a reason Edinburgh was called Auld Reekie. Anyhoo, have a wee walk around Pollokshields too, or Strathbungo

@@saintuk70 I used to live there. Like everywhere it has SOME nice areas, but more than most cities everywhere half decent is surrounded by absolute dumps like Maryhill, Govan, Castlemilk, Southside, Yorkhill etc. Glasgow is a massively overrated city. Horrible accent and worse weather.

Within Stirling, the Raploch district is considered one of the most vibrant and beautiful in the whole of Scotland. The welcoming local population makes this the most desirable of retirement locales. All the amenities you could wish for are right on your doorstep. Retirees should be confident about buying immediately as properties are snapped up often on the same day. Good luck with your search but remember 'buy Raploch' and you will not be disappointed!

@@legandrydirk Of course you can find some people who like Glasgow, but the truth is most people don't give Glasgow a second thought, it's just as anonymous to them as the people of Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Lincoln, York, Bournemouth, etc are to you. So anonymous in fact that you probably have no opinion of those people, which is precisely how most people feel about Glasgow and Glaswegians. People aren't falling over themselves to fawn over and gush over Glasgow or Glaswegians. It's just another city, no more special than any others.

The last thing we want or need is for rich tourists from elsewhere coming and pricing us out of our own communities. Retire in your own communities, please.

Most tourists are not rich people. At least I have never met one. And retirees even less so. So, no reason to believe they will be pricing you out of your own communities. (Unless you sell your houses and country estates to some Russian, Chinese, and Arab tycoons, of course.) And please, consider that the retirees' income is deriving from a foreign country but will be spent in Scotland. Thus, Scottish industry, local businesses, landlords, etc. will benefit from their spendings.

As an actual retiree who came to Scotland permanently four years ago, I nearly fell off my perch laughing at this. For starters Perth and Stirling are cities. Both are unspeakably grim although Perth nudges it as, apart from the bits overlooking the River Tay, it's just a decrepit mess. I drive 40 miles to shop there most weeks and it is always a depressing experience. Used to go to Stirling as a relief but that too is disintegrating and key businesses moving out of the uninspiring Thistle Centre. I can't comment on Kirkwall as I have yet to get to Orkney but it looks just as unappealing as Perth. Oban - the pinnacle of sea food? Really? Where? There is only one reason to go to Oban and that is to leave it on a ferry. I haven't been to Dumfries in many years and that video just reminded me why. The reality is that Scotland is, in some parts, a stunningly beautiful country so if you come here, and don't appreciate that, you'll likely be disappointed. But in those attractive areas, towns and villages are few and far between so you need to look and choose carefully. The quality varies considerably and much of the nicer ones are mainly Victorian - it's the "modern" additions that are the problem. Most of is is poor quality, cheaply built and looks utterly out of place. I'm not going to reveal where I live because it really IS one of those hidden gems and I'd quite like it to stay that way!
