I like the approach of the video, but this gets really tricky really fast. I’m a full time sound engineer and studio owner and super important to note is the perceived performance/sound quality of what a dynamic will give you is largely based on how close the mic is to the sound source. For a dynamic (or mic of any type) to give you the sound you are aiming for in a podcast you will need to be within about 6” of the mic. Mics only hear what is loudest to them which generally means closest (inverse square law) Notice in this video how he had to hunch over as he was speaking into both to get that closeness (proximity)? Any further away and the richness in the voice takes a complete dive and the mic also starts to hear the sound of your voice reflecting off your walls more instead of mostly your voice. His comments about dynamics being better in most cases for pod casts is generally correct. My concern is someone who is spending $400 or more on a camera but only spending $100 or so on the audio component. It is very imbalanced. You can listen to a KZbin video that has video issues, but you likely will quickly stop listening if the audio has issues. Remember audio is half the Content. Not using an audio interface seems like a good idea up front but you will quickly find out the $100 you spent on the usb mic is suddenly wasted because of what an audio interface provides in workflow which is necessary for anything beyond hobby and casual application. That $100 could have been better spent on a mic more suited for broadcast recording and when you do spend a couple hundred more for what will end up serving you better (interface, cable, stand). Rather than buying a USB mic - which will sit in a drawer dormant very quickly if podcasting really is what you stick with - instead, one option is to spend even less on a nice lavalier mic that you can plug directly into your phone and record your audio directly to your phone. And you can also use it for mobile interviews or as a second Mic when you have a guest on your podcast etc. I don’t completely disagree with anything, said in this video, but it comes from more of a videographers point of view(?) Instead of someone who has to deal daily with the consequences of sound issues. His intent is genuine, and his heart is in the right place but A lot of videographers pay me very frequently to fix problems they encountered as a result of not doing things right the first time. Simply backing an extra foot away from the mic so their back doesn’t hurt while they’re speaking is generally a Sound killer. By the time the audio is fixed enough to usable on their “professional” podcast, They literally have often paid me about three times What it would’ve cost them in equipment to do it right the first time. When I’m fixing the audio, I almost require that they are there with me watching how I’m doing it so at least they can learn how to fix the problems at no cost to them in the future possibly but also, so they can see how easily those problems could’ve been prevented with more consideration of investing in the correct audio equipment in the first place. Just something to consider.

A streamer buddy of mine actually recommended I look into mics people use for podcasts if I want to start streaming with good sound quality. Right now I'm looking for an upgrade over my old Samson Go Mic, it's an ok little mic, but it introduces a lot of hiss, and to top it off, it's a condenser mic and I'm looking for good options that rely on USB as I don't really want to go for an XLR setup just yet.

Throws out XLR setups cuz he says they will cost several hundred dollars more to set up. Then proceeds to use XLR setup in the audio tests. Should have used the USB if you want to compare the low budget option. I’ve found that USB always sounds like crap. Only way to get the good sound, like in this video, is with an XLR setup. IMO
@jodwnkdjnw3 жыл бұрын
Not a massive issue, but I there is something odd about this video. The 2100x is the same price as the podmic. You said you threw out the Podmic because it was only capable of XLR connectivity, but you used XLR to compare the 2100x and q2u anyway. Why is the podmic thrown out if you were only gonna compare XLR usage?
@Buzzsprout3 жыл бұрын
That's a fair question. Even though we used the XLR connection for the audio test, having a USB connection makes both the ATR2100x and Q2U much more versatile than the PodMic. We're big fans of the PodMic, and if you already have an audio interface we think it's a great microphone. But when it comes to our recommendation for new podcasters, we still encourage them to pick up the Samson Q2U

Hello, and thank you so much for this awesome content! It's amazing for newbies like me who have never gotten into the world of recording before. I hope it's not too late to ask this, but I wanted to share this doubt with you. I want to start recording podcasts, interviews, online courses, and content for videos, so I investigated online about how to choose your first microphone; but I'm having such a hard time making a decision! I showed this video to a friend who supposedly knows about microphones, and he kept insisting that my first one should be a condenser one, since he says that they have better sound quality than dynamic ones - even taking the background noise into consideration! I wouldn't want to extend myself, so basically, how would I decide between, say, a Tonor TC 20 and an Audio-Technica ATR2100x for my first professional mic for business? Thank you sooo much for your time and for these awesome videos. Hope you see this, and have an excellent day!!
@Buzzsprout3 жыл бұрын
We have yet to find a podcaster that doesn't benefit from a dynamic microphone over a condenser microphone. In a music production setting, condensers work better than dynamics. But it's not that way for podcasting.

I bought the Samson Q2U based on this video, but I'm frustrated and having issues with it. The first time I used it, I noticed the sound was lower on it, and I had to compensate electronically during editing to get my volume up to the same as my co-hosts. The 2nd time I used it, I moved the pop filter out of the way so that I could talk closer to the mic, only to get a lot of plosives. I just recorded another episode with the pop-filter but being as close as possible, and it barely picked up my voice, even worse than just a few days ago (why would it be worse now?). In case it was an issue with Zencastr, I recorded directly into GarageBand using the mic, and it still barely picks me up. I've tried talking so close to it that my mouth touches the windscreen and also just talking at double volume (practically yelling), and it still barely picks me up. I also tried switching to the cable that came with the mic because I was originally using the same cable from my previous mic; no help. To salvage the most recent episode, I'll have to crank up the gain about 25dB electronically via the compressor plug-in. It's like it got worse in just a few days. Could I just have a defective mic, or am I doing something wrong?
@umberhaven3 жыл бұрын
As a follow-up, I did some more checks including one where my mouth was right on the windscreen, and I practically yelled right into it. When I played it back, still soft. I've also confirmed the microphone is the input device and not the microphone from my laptop or earbud cable. I did find that the input was set to about halfway in the Audio MIDI Setup utility, so I cranked it all the way and tried again with marginal improvement. But, I'm still not impressed and still worried the microphone should be performing better than it is.

At the same price point, I'd pick the one that you think looks nicer and has the USB cable that doesn't need an adaptor for your computer. It's so close in terms of sounds quality. The Rode NT Mini is a condenser mic, so I'd gravitate away from that unless you're recording in a quiet treated environment. It's just more likely to pick up a bit of background noise than the Q2U.

hey man, thanks for this video, I really appreciate it, I wanna start a podcast to break into the Hungarian podcast ‘market’. I am located here, You see. I like the sound of the condensor mic and I really think that it gives you more freedom while speaking. I find myself more 'brainly' active, while being stand-up, on my feet, I find talking much more natural this way. I live next to street, where there is quite some traffic in the early hours and in the late afternoon and I am sure , condenser mic would pick up every bit of it unfortunately. I saw it from Your podcast, that dynamic mic is the way to go for me, but I am worried about the static aspect of it, like me not being not able to move or doing gestures while talking. So here is the question: Is there like a good, quality dynamic mic which is built in to the headphone. Like those pilot headphones, but with good noise cancelling on it. Have you had any experience with them? Any recommendation? My setup is basic, I would record and edit the shows using a laptop. Nothing special. It will be a comedy podcast, two guys making fun of a topic each week, while popping some beers. It would be great to hear from You mate, thanks in advance.

background noise? which one deals with it better?
@Buzzsprout3 жыл бұрын
Both mics are pretty good at rejecting background noise. We couldn't notice much of a difference in our testing

So I have the Q2U and when I record I hear alot of clicks and pops from my tongue coming off the roof of my mouth. Am I doing something wrong? Am I maybe too close to the mic?
@Buzzsprout Жыл бұрын
Hey there! For optimal sound quality, begin by positioning yourself four finger-widths away from the microphone capsule. Bear in mind that different microphones possess varying levels of sensitivity, hence experimenting with different approaches and trusting your ears is vital. Tweak the distance until you achieve the ideal proximity. 🙂

Hey all..which mic is best for one to one interview podcast as well as vedio shoot? Please guide me
@BuzzsproutАй бұрын
Hi Rajan! I recommend the Samson Q2U. It's a dynamic microphone that captures clear audio without picking up too much background noise-a crucial feature if you're recording in a less-than-perfect environment. It offers better sound quality at an affordable price, making it an ideal choice for podcasting. Hope that helps! If you have any other questions, drop me an email at support@buzzsprout.com

which one is better for recording and edditing on Ipad.

Either one can work! You just need a USB to Lightning cable adapter to plug it in

I am going to buy the Samsung today but I have a question - if I have a guest can I just get another microphone? I am assuming you can? Would I need to change the settings to have them both as separate tracks? I have never done this but its pretty easy to do? Thanks in advance, super great content!

Hey Scott! Do you mean the Samson Q2U?
@theprofessorscott24332 жыл бұрын
Yep, the Samson Q2u. That is what happens when I type fast - mistakes happen (a lot!). Just a quick refresher - if I want to have have two or more people talking, is it easy to have multiple mics?
@Buzzsprout2 жыл бұрын
@@theprofessorscott2433 That's alright! 😊 Yes, it is best to have a separate mic for each of the people you have in your show. This will allow you to edit seamlessly, having separate audios and tracks.

I snagged the Samson Q2U (thanks for the rec!) but when I record in Audacity, the input volume is MUCH lower than when I was using the Blue Yeti. Are there some settings that I need to adjust in audacity in order to increase the output volume? Thanks!
@Buzzsprout4 жыл бұрын
You can adjust the recording volume by adjusting the Recording Volume slider on the top right of the Audacity dashboard. It's the one right next to the Microphone icon

two questions what do you think about USB Streaming Podcast PC Microphone, SUDOTACK professional 192KHZ/24Bit and what is the connection for head set on the one with the sturdy stand can I use USB head set connection?
@Buzzsprout3 жыл бұрын
That's not a microphone we've tested before, so we couldn't give you a good recommendation one way or the other. The Samson Q2U uses a standard headphone jack for monitoring the audio, so a USB headset wouldn't work. However, you should be able to plug your USB head set directly into your computer and monitor the audio that way.

@@Buzzsprout You know how podcast host and singers have ear plugs or head set to listen to their voice while they sing or talk? that's what I am looking for.

Hi! It can, but we highly suggest having a different microphone for you and your co-host/guest for easy audio-editing.

Does it matter if its 3 people on this podcast as far as the mics?
@Buzzsprout3 жыл бұрын
It doesn't. You'll just need to pick up an audio interface like the Zoom Podtrak P4 to record each person on their own microphone. Here's a review we just did of the P4 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYOxqIpqorZngsU
