Propane is generally rated at about 1/2 hour per pound. So 30 pound tanks generally only get about 15 hours of run time depending on load. Even the super efficient tiny propane only generators get about 1 hour per pound. There is no chance this is running 96 hours on the 30lb tank.

I hesitated to remove it since it might detract from resale but finally I got tired of the grief and saw for the first time a suitcase generator rated 4k and dual fuel as a bonus and it would fit the same spot with space to spare. I bought the Pulsar one year ago carefully broke it in, also made a Tee fitting and cutoff for the propane on my RV. It seemed to have no problem with my rooftop 13.5k AC although I'm in Alaska and dont use AC much. Thank you so much for this review which I suppose I especially like since it validates my experience so far with my Pulsar. I bought 3 of these in 2023. I believe I paid like 425 for one and 499 for the other two. They are fantastic and you will struggle to find a more powerful dual fuel unit at 47lbs. That's the key they are easy for myself and my wife to handle or deploy. Just ran 3 days no electric in Houston for the Hurricane. One ran 2 refrigerators and two freezers and my garage doors the other ran my main refrigerator and a 8500 btu portable ac. They worked fantastic and I changed the oil every morning has it only takes about 10 minutes. Just note some literature doesn't reflect the proper amount of oil. They take 15.8 ounces. I use a magnetic dip stick. I think I will sell my pulsar 2200 and use that money to get a fourth unit. They are great backups to a larger system.

@@johnnysweekends I have switched to Champion. The Honda’s are way to difficult to work on and parts are expensive. Carburetor issues and low oil sensor issues. To get an oil sensor repaired costs just as much or more then buying a new Champion. It’s inside the case of the engine so the whole motor has to be disassembled and basically resealed. It was totally my fault and left fuel in my 2016 model year Champion. Jump on their website and ordered a new carburetor and gasket kit for less then $50 shipped. 20 min later back up and running. I still have it but in storage. Since then I have purchased a pair of duel fuel generators and have never put a drop of gasoline in them. They have hundreds of hours on them with zero issues. @SaabAholic9 ай бұрын
@@Sanity586I think it runs slower and quieter on eco mode but I should let Johnny answer that.
@johnnysweekends9 ай бұрын
@Sanity586 The eco function has nothing to do with making it quieter. The eco simply throttles the engine speed down from 4000rpm to 3200rpm roughly. But as loads increase so does rpm, hence sure the unit will get louder. This is how inverter gens work, well one of the features. Both units were set on eco and both units increased in engine rpm through the test.

Two issues with this generator. Recently did a 7K trip with our camper. This was our power source many nights. I fought this thing for a few days. Issue one and NOT a pulsar issue more a generator issue is the floating neutral. This caused a few issues with high loads and GFCI. Added a neutral plug all issues went away. The only issue with this generator is the stupid strainer in the fuel tank.if not perfectly lined up it will block the fuel vent hose which does not allow gas to flow. I removed this strainer and it now runs like a champ.

Great video! I actually just bought that Pulsar myself in December. On sale for $489 at Walmart! I did a full break in and I’m still putting it through its paces. When you have eco mode on and you block load with 1500w, does your unit seem to “step” up a 2-3 times to increase rpm? As opposed to just a smooth ramp up? Mine does. With eco off, it block loads smoothly. Honestly for the $489 I wanted to find faults with the Pulsar but it’s been running great with no issues at all. The only complaint is the noise, but that is expected with a 145cc engine stuffed into the same package at the 80cc. I’ve run a bunch of inverter gens and can often tell a brand by the sound of the unit running and exhaust. I also compared the Pulsar to a Champion 2000 dual fuel inverter gen and with the sound test, the Champion was about 2-3db quieter no load eco on. What was interesting is that the Pulsar ended up quieter at 1500w by about 2-3 db since it’s a bigger engine with higher output. The champion has a very raspy exhaust sound and higher pitch. The pulsar has a much lower percussive sound which seems to pass through house walls unfortunately. I’m planning to build a deck box enclosure for it, to try and block some of that noise. But overall it seems solid. Just like you said, for the cost of buying another Honda and then adding a $250 propane kit, the Pulsar has the power of 2 Hondas and propane built in. So saving $1500, I could build a deck box enclosure for maybe $200 for the sound
@johnnysweekends9 ай бұрын
The little 80cc Yamaha clones in many gens sound great at the low rpm but once past about 30% load they start getting louder and around the peak they are pretty raspy like you said and I much prefer the lower tones like the Honda and the 145cc unit. But yes many people like this series of gens with the 145cc engine.

I dont know what your setup is at all. But I also have a high volume regulator so I can run many items in the rv and the gen at the same time if needed. Which is a 345k btu auto switch regulator. Pretty common but some may be as low as 160k btu. You will need to T out of the bottom of the regulator to add a new line over for the generator which should be at least 3/8th inch. Mine is 3/8 so I can have a longer line and also test future products. But can use the 5/16th for the smaller gens. Here is a list of some items you may need. High volume regulator amzn.to/3vZQfdT Maybe take regulator to Home Depot and build your setup but something like this. Brass T:amzn.to/3OwtKnr 3/8th hose amzn.to/492dfrp Or if you have a propane outlet for a BBQ you can use those for the small to medium generators most times. Electric start defiantly has its pros and cons. The early versions of the 3500iad has a small parasitic drain so the battery would drain enough to where if you dont start it or charge it in about 1.5 months it may not have enough battery to start. The new ones are now better. I myself prefer the size of the pulsar unit. Little smaller and honestly I dont know why it is quieter overall even though same engine and Im pretty sure same muffler. So must be the the housing design helps muffle engine noise. Although I just bought the new pulsar …maxpeedingrods just sent me there new unit….uhhh and its real nice!! Is the Ecoflow generator your preferred power source to supplement your Ecoflow Pro OR are you finding advantages to switching to a suitcase generator like the Pulsar?
@johnnysweekends3 ай бұрын
There are several benefits and drawbacks backs to the smart gen from Ecoflow. One is I have a battery in all slots, so now if I want to use smart gen I have to disconnect a battery from my power kit. And that battery won’t get charged. And when you have a 15kwh battery bank 1650 watts from the smaller smart gen can take a long time. 2500 watts would be a little more ideal. But the pulsar is able to run my 13.5k AC or my 15k ac. It could do both but it’s maxed and won’t last long. But when just running the main AC unit I’m drawing about 1700-1800 watts and dumping 200-400 watts back into PL plus what ever might be left from solar. That way if I wanna use AC through the night, I have enough battery and don’t have to run the generator. But I focus on using my front AC a lot and a fan to circulate the air and then I’m only using about 1000-1200 watts at most. That’s a problem with Ecoflow is if you have a delta pro or delta pro 3 and have it full with extra batteries you can’t plug in smart Gen for DC charging. So then it’s AC charging and pass through Butttttttt……….stay tuned 😁

The Honda is still quieter over all in the low and mid range. When Honda is maxed the pulsar still has more to go and that’s when they are closer but Honda still edges it out barely. But are you gonna stand there and just look and listen to it? Also the pulsar easily handles 2000-2200 watts which is perfect for most everyone who wants to run up to a 15k ac unit that uses a max 1800 watts. Put in the back of you pick up bed and even quieter 👍🏼
@dondgc22986 ай бұрын
@@johnnysweekends so one more question (and to answer yours no I’m not going to just stand there and listen to it - well not for long anyway 😂). I saw you respond affirmatively to a comment wishing the Genmax 4600 was quieter. Is it noticeably (annoyingly) louder than the Pulsar? I could live with a noise increase over my Honda 2200 and it sounds like the Pulsar is reasonable in that category - does the Genmax jump into a another category sound-wise or is it just an incremental bump? I’m thinking of upgrading my 2200 to either the Pulsar or the Genmax before the start of hurricane season, hence all the questions. And the Genmax 4600 is on sale at Amazon right now.
@johnnysweekends6 ай бұрын
@dondgc2298 the genmax for some reason just seems louder especially at around the 60% load and above. More so than the pulsar. It’s also using a larger engine at 159cc verses 145cc. Overall pretty close but yea I was surprised as it got up to around 50% and then more and it was just not as quiet as I would have liked it. I suggested to genmax that the new units have to be quieter. Because even the pulsar at the 75% load area is louder than say a 4500 champion or predator. But size difference and weight is a thing to consider. But I didn’t buy it to run more than about 2200-2300 watts. Most times it wont see more than 2000 and it loves it there. If you are always needing more than step up to a larger. I think the EFi is good but at the 50% range and below. Even the Honda eu3200 doesnt do well above 2100 watts on fuel efficiency. Such a small tank at 2100 watts lasts about 4 hrs. About 5.5-6 hrs at 1700 watts or so. I've never understood why it is that when these comparisons are done a 2k watt Honda is used versus a 4k generic generator. Why would you not compare the 4k Pulsar to a 4k Honda. From what I saw on Honda's website their 4k generator would produce 66-67 decibels of noise, comparable to what the Pulsar is producing. Or, is my ignorance of things keeping me from understanding?
@johnnysweekendsАй бұрын
When ever I review products, number one question is how loud it is, how is it compared to a Honda. No one seems to care or think about the fact this has a larger engine than the Honda which will produce more noise. There is no enclosed Honda unit that is 4000 watts that I know of. The little Honda is good but many times people are wanting the same size unit with just a little more power. And by only 2-300 watts. And that’s where these are filling the gap. I wish Honda would make something like this in a dual fuel front he factory. The eu3200i is just not appealing honestly. Way bigger and heavier and the price is crazy. So these have been fitting the bill.

@randysegler75775 ай бұрын
We're shopping for a dual-fuel generator and are intrigued by your recommendation. The AZ reviews have nearly 10% one star with many complaints that they didn't work or worked briefly and then stopped and the customer support was poor. That gives us pause. Now that you've had yours for a few months, what has your experience been?
@johnnysweekends5 ай бұрын
So my experience first. Now this gen and its engine has now been around for a little while and used in several models. I used it in the genmax 3500 dual fuel, the Maxpeeding rods 3200,3300 and 3500 which I still have the 3500 and about 11 hrs i think 🤔. The newer pulsar 4000 has I think 9 hours on it as I rotate a lot of units or lend them out when someone needs one. With all the solar now it’s becoming rare I use my gen for more than a couple hours. Mainly to keep the batteries close to top to run ac on and off through the night on the battery bank. Which even then its only the first 3-5 hours. I also avoid 100+ areas when possible. Now for negative reviews. I read many many reviews good and bad. Why??? I have no idea, but like many most are people who come back to complain and the ones who never have problems you never hear from. And people dont want to hear it, but sometimes they are the problem and the ones at fault why the unit doesnt work right or it failed or its hard starting. Especially using propane which is probably why Honda stays away from it. Air in the line, low supply from an old regulator and more. So sometimes it’s not the gen but the supply or the person using it. Propane can cause issues if anything is faulty or old on the supply side. I can only go off my experience and what people say who have come to leave a comment on my channel. Then the reviews i have to read and judge what they say. Is it more the user or the unit ? I love how people compare, or it’s louder than the Yamaha 2000is or Honda eu2000is. OK the Yamaha has a 80cc engine, the Honda has a 98.5 cc engine. This is 145cc engine. Unfortunately the bigger you get the harder it is to keep quiet. But if only using it around 2200 watts and less especially around 1800 or less it’s more than acceptable. Now will it last as long as the Honda, no. Will it get close..? Maybe. But its factory dual fuel, many parts can be found, and it’s the same size and weight and has more power. And if an internal part on the Honda dies at 1500 hours, am I going to pay a shop or take my time to repair an old unit and then maybe get 200 hours before it dies again. It’s like putting money into a really old car. When is the point to let it go…? Idk. I think if you are using it a ton and repeatative use then the Honda may be better. If very occasional use and only for camping which you may only do for a year or two, save the money. Buy a warranty and happy trails. Sorry for the unload there lol. Hope this helps

When Honda still build quality…..read the forums and group pages. See the recalls on the eu2220i when it was first released in spring of 2018. The eu7000 failures of fuel pumps and more or recalls this past year due to fire. Honda was and still is a good generator, but they are stagnant, and the price is high for whats available for the common user and they are missing a big big market. And they also realize no money is made on units that last 20 years. II couldn’t even get an inverter board for my eu3000is…it was DCed and no SS number. So if it died…it’s a paper weight. Spendy paper weight
@ChaJ679 ай бұрын
I ended up getting the newer model Pulsar GX4000, not GD4000 mainly just due to availability at the time of purchase. While I haven't sound meter tested, I have heard it is a tad quieter than the GD model. The GX model is still a bit rough around the edges. Had to fix up the valve lash clearances right away as it was way off and causing the generator to run really rough. Had to change the spark plug because it was a counterfeit piece of junk that also ruined the day when I tried to run on it. After all of the work I have done on it basically straight out of the box, it still doesn't sound as nice under low idle as the older GD model, but it does hum nicely now under load. Just looking at things like this, I doubt this is a generator made to last. So then you look into engine RPMs under load and it certainly sounds a lot faster than 3,600 RPM. You kind of want 3,600 RPM or less for a reason because it is a lot less wear and tear on the engine. Some people have said generators like this pull 4,500 RPM and to my ear that sounds about right. It is also quieter to run an engine at or below 3,600 RPM and as you are finding, this generator is not as quiet as some of the competition. Not bad, but certainly not the greatest. I had to run all day due to a power outage right after I finished breaking in the engine and even with this slightly higher sound level, my neighbors were fine. They said they couldn't hear it at all inside their place. I know at least for car engines, which are bigger, my dad for example setup his Suzuki Samari to have the engine pull 4,500 RPM at regular freeway speed. That engine was constantly breaking down. My parents also had a 4-cylinder minivan right before the 6-cylinder model came out and that engine also constantly broke down from the higher loads on it, probably pulling well over 4,000 RPM at regular freeway speeds. I had a high mileage used Escort at one point in college pulling something more like 3,000 RPM at the same freeway speeds and it was far more reliable while being a high mileage Ford to give you an idea of how poor the reliability of these higher running RPM engines were. A big competitor I see in this space is the Predator 5000. The Predator 5000 does propane and gasoline like this one and I even found someone making a natural gas kit for it, which is just new hoses and external regulators. As a little side point with the demand regulator being external on the Predator 5000, it allows a demand regulator adjusted for natural gas to be used with the generator. The Predator 5000 only goes up to 3,600 RPM. It has electric start. It is significantly quieter than this generator. But then you are looking at twice the weight of the GX model Pulsar and over twice the weight of the older GD model, it is twice the size, and nearly twice the price. Granted battery electric start adds a lot of size and mass to a generator, so stripping that out makes the generator significantly lighter and smaller on its own. You look at it and you think I want something that is small, an easy one man job to move around, and inexpensive and you end up with something like the Pulsar GD model. You can try something like the GX model, which has more features, but as I mentioned this model has some issues you need to work on straight out of the box and it is a little bit bigger and heavier. These little Pulsar generators are probably not going to last a very long time with regular use and staying on top of maintenance. Just the engine slamming away as hard as it does to do so much in a compact package alone screams this thing is not meant to last forever. And with my GX model, when you have to do a bunch of stuff to it just to get it to run reasonably well straight out of the box like I did, this seems like an even more dubious proposition to pin hopes on it lasting a long time under regular use. Granted, propane burns more cleanly and leaves less deposits, so this should help the engine last longer I would think. If you want a generator that lasts a long time, you are probably looking at a Honda or even Predator where it is built to higher standards and the generator is much bigger and bulkier for its rated power output. I suppose it depends on what your priority is. I was more after compact and cheap for occasional use. If you are after regular use and size and weight is not so much a priority and are willing to spend more for your workhorse generator, I don't think the Pulsar is for you. As every db makes a difference, getting to as quiet as possible, the Pulsar is also not for you. If you prioritize more like I have, then sure, the Pulsar is a rare gem. It is getting an important job done and its sound level is good enough. And anyways when it comes to making a generator last, you will need to be handy enough to do the things I did to my GX model generator.

Since this generator has a floating neutral it is probably wise and safe to use a grounding plug, which would take up the one 120v outlet or learn how to bond the generator neutral to ground, which might void the warranty. Most portable generators have bonded neutrals for safety and code requirements. Read up on it!
@johnnysweekends6 ай бұрын
This is actually completely wrong. Most portable generators do not have a bonded neutral when looking at inverter units. As per NEC code you should not have two points of bonding hence a bonded generator going to a bonded home, only one should be bonded when using a portable inverter unit. Same with a RV a bond is not necessary as you will use the trailers bond. A bonding plug for RVs is typically only needed when the RV has an onboard PMS or EMS or if using say a power watchdog. And yes I have read up on it. 🤷🏼♂️
@judsimonson90876 ай бұрын
@@johnnysweekends Hi, actually is was a suggestion and not personal. Most folks be they Rvers, van dwellers and even homeowners will want to use their portable generators for projects where they are away from a grid connection, which is often for full-timers. In this instance it is recommended to have the generator bonded to ground for safety. Contractors that work at sites without power usually know this. As you know it is an easy fix with a bonded grounding plug. KZbin has many short videos showing how easy it is to do or simply buy one for a small price. Thought it was in the best interest to let others know that they should look into it.

Never said they were as good. But …when it comes to dollars spent verses hours, verses output, verses downtime to have a unit repaired and the parts only goes back into a used/worn unit. That is where some cheaper units make a lot more sense when adding time and money. Hence construction guys, they will buy the cheapest piece of crap gen, and let there’s guys abuse it. A Honda has to be repaired and taken to a shop unless they wanna do it. At a Honda shop you are $150 a hour. Doesn’t make a lot of sense now when these cheaper units are starting to do pretty well. Will they get as many hours back to back…..no. But i will get more hours, have a spare with two that is still cheaper than one Honda and when your single unit breaks I have a spare and still am going. There are pros and cons to everything out there. Unfortunately Honda is missing a big big market hence we have finally seen a sale. And maybe will see more sales or a fixed lower price. And a new unit that doesn’t need $350 to make it run propane adding to the cost. Again now 3 units verses one. It made sense along time ago. Much like it didn’t make since to buy anything form over seas in the 70-80s….honda…ewww junk. But after some time….well the rest is history until someone takes over with something cheaper and performing almost as good for half the price. And then the cycle repeats it self again. I had 4 Hondas now down to 3…which soon will be 2 because the EFI will go…. That makes no sense to me especially if something happens warranty will be void very quick. And my companion already doesn’t seem to be the same as my eu2200i. I use the companion a little more but I need to check it out.

Why no real load test? I would be very surprised if this unit comes anywhere close to its rated continuous and surge output claims. At the ambient temperatures you were testing at, the Honda will run all day at 2000 Watts and at 2200 Watts the overload light will likely not even be flashing yet. Honda is very conservative on their continuous and surge ratings. Unlike these cheap knockoffs that are more often than not, very optimistic and untruthful. These cheap generators are nice toys, but if you need something you can absolutely rely on, buy a Honda or Yamaha. As the saying goes, “buy once, cry once”. Just my experience and opinions of course!
@johnnysweekends9 ай бұрын
I didn’t do a load test as in those conditions it’s pretty easy for any gen to perform well. But I have also tested several with this almost exact configuration like the genmax or maxpeedingrods 3500 models. They use the same engine and so far they have performed well. The little maxpeedingrods is very identical to the pulsar 4000 but in a 3500 unit and has also been a popular seller. They also just came out with two new models I should have soon. Yamaha is now made in china and Honda has figured out generators and equipment that last 20 years does not make money. So even they dont last like they used to. Join enough forum pages and you’ll see many complaints with the newer units. And if you get 60-70% of the hours of an off brand and can buy 2 of them well you are ahead of what the Honda does. And as a business are you going to put money into a Honda that’s already produced 70% of its working life to only have it fail again in a year? Plus the down time to have the Honda fixed? People are realizing its easier to just go buy a champion or other like brand and it’s available everywhere and its cheaper. I like my little Hondas and even the 3200 is nice but it’s heavy and again people want a propane or NG option. So an added expense again.

I hardly use a generator at all now but when I do I prefer to use propane. The Hondas just sit. Only use now to show sound difference.

Did I miss the output load test? Too much video time playing with decibel meter & propane leak tester and not enough video time talking about the actual generator.
@johnnysweekends9 ай бұрын
I will do the load test on a different video. So many care about noise…how loud…how loud?? So figured I would give some footage on how loud it is. Which its not. But also most any gen performs great when 60 degrees. 95 degree days are for load and stress testing. But i have tested many others and shown these same units perform well, have a clean sine wave, and run up to spec loads. But you shouldn’t be running it at full loads anyway. If you are you need a bigger generator.

It All comes down to build quality and longevity The Honda will outlast that pulsar 20 times over. That's why the big cost difference.
@johnnysweekends9 ай бұрын
That’s not entirely true anymore. Maybe 15-20 years ago but Honda figured out products that last for ever doesn’t make money. These figures have been gone over before. Hence the saying goes, are you going to but a new transmission into a vehicle with 275k miles? Or is it time to move on? Unless it’s a Toyota 4 runner….those run for ever 😂
@YukonHawk19 ай бұрын
Do you have data to back that up? Thank you @johnnysweekends
@johnnysweekends9 ай бұрын
Data for which part? The Toyota ..? Or the generators…. Which doesn’t matter because if you read enough comments from my page, several other KZbinr pages, thousands of reviews and comments dig into bringing sales of units and more you can gather a lot of info. If you spend about several hundred hours in data search you to can find the answers. Oh talking to people while out camping and more also provides lots of good info. I will leave it at that. And yes the 4 runners run for ever lol

That product screen covering 1/3 of the screen is going to get me to unsubscribe. Irritating AF.

Just show us about sound and power meter reading. No product connection test. Really a waste of time video my view.

First off how do you know it's not best selling right now?? 2nd chill with the honda stuff they are over priced for what!! Predator has already showed it can be done with out bending over their customers for a 2200 generator.

In your research what have you found to be a best seller in this class?

The pulsar has an obnoxious noise tone to it. That noise is a deal breaker
