As someone who is a bit later in life and considering a big career change, this is fantastic information to help with decision making.

I think everbodies first pick is biomedical science - however, if you go through 4 years doing a biomed-sci undergrad and then DON'T get accepted into medical school, you're not really all that employable with just a biomed undergrad. Personally, I find that choosing something a little less niche like nursing sci, life sci, etc. can be more beneficial. (nursing is usually offered through colleges in partnerships with universities *however* some universities offer a straight up nursing degree, such as TMU or Brock)

UCalgary does not require the med students to have a major… so a 2 year program in Undergrad is possible… followed by a 3y medical school.

You made a great choice Parsa. My daughter absolutely loved the program, and the school. She had so many unique opportunities to get involved with the student union, faculty associations, research, etc. She just graduated med school this year and she has five other friends that took the program at Laurier that are in either in med school or graduated med school in Canada. Not everyone in the program wanted to be doctors. One of her friends went on to get a Masters at U of T and now has an amazing job with the government in public healthcare. You are going to love Laurier!

I think this video just shows some of the major flaws with the medical school system in canada. Students tend to take easier courses who want to go into medicine. It definitely places those who take harder courses or go to harder schools at a disadvantage. In addition did you really not want to go into engineering because of 6 courses or because it was actually challenging? From what I’ve heard engineering can be incredibly difficult to get 3.9 GPA and likely more challenging than all the programs you listed.

Thanks for this video. Very helpful. The QuARMS program criteria appears to be only for black and indigenous with 10 seats. Queens has a health science program and we I have to choose between Queens Health Science and Western Biomedical BMSc, what is your opinion on the best premed program.

Great question man! Honestly most basic science programs in Ontario are pretty standard so I would go primarily based on other factors like cost, location, etc. That being said I like that western has actual published data on where their grads end up going which is part of the why I went to western and would recommend western all else being equal!

Hey ArXi! I think it would be worth talking to someone in health sci about this question but from what I remember in health sci you might have to use more of your elective space to fulfill all the pre req courses for medical school whereas they’re built into Med sci. I’d look at the courses included in both programs and compare them to uOttawa med’s pre req courses as well as UBCs to see if it lines up!

I think math majors and physics major having high acceptance rate is more corelation than causation. Math and physics have the highest average allumni IQ (~130). The average math or physics grad is a borderline genuis. Going into these programs itself won't make you do better on the mcat.
