This is the first comprehensive guide to every single Medical School in Canada. There are 17 Canadian Medical Schools: The University of British Columbia, University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of Saskatchewan, University of Manitoba, Dalhousie, Memorial University of Newfoundland, University of Toronto, McMaster University, Western University, NOSM, Queen's University, University of Ottawa, Laval, Sherbrooke and Montreal. The focus for this video was to review the most recent data on admissions stats, GPA, MCAT, CASPer, Interviews and everything else that I could find in terms of official information that will help you get accepted into medical school. There's a lot of misleading information about medical school these days, so I'm hoping that this will be a great resources for premeds for years to come. This video took me an entire week to research, so please don't hesitate to comment and ask questions if need be :)

*Important Updates to the Video* - McGill does have mandatory courses for applicants. "Basic Science Courses Candidates are required to have completed 7 introductory basic science courses (minimum of 21 semester-hours/ credits) with labs: 2 introductory Biology courses with labs (at least 6 cr.); 2 introductory Chemistry courses with labs (at least 6 cr.); 1 introductory Organic Chemistry course with lab (at least 3 cr.); 2 introductory Physics courses with labs (at least 6 cr.)." - As of 2020, Queen's will require the CASPer test. As of right now, they still have not mentioned it in their "method of selection" section on their website so we don't really know how they will use it. But it will be a requirement for 2020/21. - The French medical schools - from a subscriber " Here in Quebec you need to have a DEC that stands for diplôme d'étude collégiale witch you can obtain in CÉGEP (CÉGEP= collège d'enseignement générale et professionel) (any kind of DEC with 3 mandatory classes in chemistry and physics and 2 mandatory classes in biologie and math. Or have a DEC in science naturelle or sciences-art-lettres) or the equivalent like a bachelor. Because of the Virus the MMI have been replace with the casper test. and the MCAT is not required in any university in Quebec. Sherbrooke= 3054 applications for 200 seats, CRC (côte de rendement collégiale is the equivalent of the GPA) of 35,101, 4 years program Laval= 2508 applications for 214 seats, CRC of 34,9215, 4 to 5 years program Montréal=3135 applications for 288 seats, CRC of 34,921, program of 4 years with the possibility of 1 year of preparation in some circumstances" Thanks for the help with the patch notes guys 🤙

Talked to a very young Dr from Quebec I was working with during the pandemic and she said that you can go to med school in quebec right after high school, u take some type of 2 year pre course and boom.

@@akadopeboi Yaa but honestly Cegep is a pain because it works with the R score not the Gpa. Bascially your score depends on how well you can do compared to the class , not your individual self . So if the class average is 80% and you have 90% , youll end up with a very average R score ...its very complicated to explain and the 2 year program is honestly difficult because you have to take at the very least 3 calculus classes, as well as 3 physics classes + 4 chemistry classes and 2-3 biology with no major in a certain topic that you actually enjoy! Which makes it harder in my opinion than going straight from high school to a bachelors Degree where you can choose your discipline and actually excel in

@@akadopeboi They are not necessarily prep classes, oh sorry, you mean directly to med school not bachelor or uni, still same applies, you can view them as the 2 years of bachelor or freshmen. Still Quebec High School end in grade 11, and doesn't have to pass math. You can save another year with University Ottawa taking students after Grade 10. So 2 year bachelor or freshmen and then med school

I am doing a collaborative BScN program which means I will be studying at a college for two years and at a university for the last two years, so I was wondering if I would be eligible to apply and if the courses that I am taking at the college will be used towards my application. It would mean alot if you can help me with these questions. Thank you.

for UdeM, you need at least a 33 r score to get in to the first round of applications. Then, they’ll consider 50% your CASPer and 50% your r score. Same for USherbrooke but the cut-off is 32. After you get invited to the interviews or MEM, it’s only going to be based on your performance during the interviews. They do not take non-academic requirements into consideration

Hi Kiana :) The majority of the medical schools do not have required degrees or courses. But, if you look at the "prerequisite courses" sections of the sheets, I've included which courses the schools will require that you take before being accepted. The one exception is McGill - I got this wrong on the original sheets. I've pinned a comment listing what they require for courses. Usually, all applicants will need to have gone to university to pursue a bachelor's degree. Beyond that, be sure to check directly with the school websites - degree requirements can get tricky and change from cycle to cycle.

@nxtgenmd

Tuition is drastically higher for international students vs. Canadian students - Mac gives numbers of almost 100K per year for international students vs. 26K for Canadians. From province to province, it varies as well. Calgary's website says tuition is around 18K per year which is substantially lower than each of the Ontario schools. Usually, at least as far as I know, there is no intra-institutional differences in tuition cost between OOP and IP 🤙

Quebec Cegep are not necessarily prep classes, oh sorry, you mean directly to med school not bachelor or uni, still same applies, you can view them as the 2 years of bachelor or freshmen. Still Quebec High School end in grade 11, and doesn't have to pass math. You can save another year with University Ottawa taking students after Grade 10. So 2 year bachelor or freshmen and then med school

Hi! I’m assuming the averages are on a 4.0 scale, but I figured I’d ask just to be sure: are the averages on a 4.0 scale or a 4.33 scale (like UBC does I think?) Thank you so much for making this video by the way! It’s very helpful 😊

Hey, glad it helped :D Most GPAs are reported on the 4.0 scale for medicine, but I've noted the exceptions. Manitoba uses a 4.5 GPA system for example. In the premed scene, Ryerson University uses the 4.33 system and those grades get converted to the 4.0 system. Hope that clears it up!

Not sure about the states, but if your education was done outside of Canada, you just need to work out how the grades will be counted/accredited. Each school has their own policy regarding this and your best bet would be to check with whichever school you wanted to apply to :)

Hi :) In the case of Internationally educated applicants, each school will have its own policy regarding how they accredit your grades. Check directly with the school websites for more info or reach out to them directly via email if you can't find what you're looking for

Hey Kiran, like for Canadian educated students you need to try your best to keep your GPA as high as possible and get a very high MCAT score - especially the CARS section for Canadian Schools 🤙 look into the CANMEDS roles as well and try to build extracurriculars around those specific roles. Best of luck!

@nxtgenmd
@nxtgenmd 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Abigail, in your situation you could either focus on applying to schools who take international applicants, or you can apply for permanent residency - although I've heard that it can be quite difficult. Alternatively, you can just do medical school in the UK and then transfer over to Canada for residency, but that process is also very difficult. Unfortunately, the process is much more difficult for international applicants in my opinion. But every year there are applicants who are successful. Research your top choices and just submit your application if you'd like 🔥

@@chimsomokonkwo8479 no worries! I've listed which schools offer bonuses for master's degrees in the school sheets. In all cases though, a masters will not change the way that your individual undergrad grades are accounted for. See Dalhousie's various policies for GPA calculation on their website though - you can use your entire masters as 1 undergrad year in one of their calculations. 🤙 In terms of specific masters degrees, none that I know of. Everyone that I've spoken with has said that they'd recommend choosing something that you actually enjoy if you want to do it :)

With all of the non-quebec schools, the answer is no... mostly anyways. Queens has the QuARMS program which will accept high school students. They then do a few years in university and then go to medical school right after that provided they meet a few requirements. Some of the french schools will also accept applicants right after CEGEP - so after high school but before university technically. I'm not really too sure with how that works because I'm not familiar with that system. Usually a bachelor's or pursuit of a bachelor's is required here in Canada :)

I have a question. Is 516 (128/131/126/131) a good score to apply for Canadian medical schools? You mentioned in one of your videos that marks should be equally distributed. Anyway, I follow your videos for my daughter 😄 and this is her first time MCAT score. Should she keep this mark or try for a better score? She is a 3rd year undergrad student. BTW, your videos are so helpful! Keep up the good work and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I attended Harvard, had a full scholarship out of HS. Made it 3 years, then the Trump years happened. I had no issues at all with the man, but Harvard went full on Liberal and the professors followed suit. No more learning about our degrees, just full on virtue signalling and protests. Long story short, I transferred to McGill (rather easy to do from a top Ivy League) and my mind is focused on studies again, and no politics.
