They definitely do have their own colors for each class. It’s not as diverse as Shadows of Valentia, because a few of them are reused, like Mercedes and Lysithea. But if you look at characters like Yuri or Sylvain, you can definitely see their unique colors.

I do like how attack and magic are based on the strength stat, it makes it easier for units to switch from Mage to a physical attacker and also gives the player more flexibility when it comes to customizing their army

The mercenaries have some of the baddest poses as mages. Kamui looks like a complete badass ready to throw fire punches, while saber just nonchalantly throws the staff onto his shoulder. They look amazing, and just another reason to love Echoes for it's value in replayability.

Ghast, try using Sagittae on Alm's route. There are a ton of armor units that are big problem characters in that route. Sagittae actually does more than Excalibur. Gray is a good user for it because Str and HP is like all he gets, which is all you need for Sagittae burst

Here's an answer, two years late. The key lies in the differences between Alm and Celica's routes. Tobin's AS advantage is only significant in the early game, true, but the early game is when mages shine the best on Alm's route. By the time Kliff catches up in AS, mages will mostly be delegated to support, due to Alm's abundance of highly mobile units and open maps. Tobin gets Physic, allowing him to continue supporting the frontliners, where a magic Kliff would fall behind. Warping is an option, but Lukas appreciates being warped a lot more. Thus, Kliff is better suited to be an Archer or Cavalier if you want to use him, as it will allow him to see more combat. Celica's route is rife with low mobility maps, like the swamps and deserts. Because of this, the movement disadvantage of mages is much less pronounced, thus the higher emphasis placed on doubling *lategame* compared to early game on Alm's route. Personally, I actually prefer not making any of the Ram kids mages at all; I think Cleric Faye and Silque are all the magic I really need until Tatiana. My usual setup is Merc Gray, Archer Tobin, Cavalier Kliff, and Cleric Faye. Certainly, Mage Kliff isn't a bad option. But the important thing to consider is *when* a fast mage is more important. On Alm's route, that's at the beginning, where Tobin shines.

@@pointblankvt6780 Also a late comment, but I still think that Ghast saying Mage is a worse option than Soldier is way too harsh, since mages are a much more versatile class with their standard recovers and magical damage. There's honestly nothing stopping players from making Tobin and Kliff into mages in order to make the Leather shield merc a joke. I really just wouldn't want to rely on a shaky 60% hit rate with nosferatu, especially on Hard mode.

@@pointblankvt6780 This. Exactly. Mages in Echoes aren't good. 4 movement is terrible. The rings only marginally help, but the movement is awful when dread fighters have nearly the same movement as cavalry and fliers. That's why they are most useful early game or when they have physic/other utility. And Tobin is the prime unit for being best early game and has late game physic to remain helpful when he can't contribute much otherwise for growths. By contrast, Kliff is best in the late game for his growths overall so it's wasted to keep him as a mage vs bow knight/gold knight instead. Essentially: mage Tobin because the class and unit are best early game. Bow knight Kliff because his long term potential suits him better when he hits his stride, and bow knight is a great late game class.

Leigh Needleman bow knight still isn’t necessarily good for kliff. One of kliff’s best strengthes stats wise is his overall high physical bulk combined with high speed means he is an enemy phase monster. Most his damage is gonna come from the counter. Using a class that can’t counter up close kinda waste that strength of kliff. Ideally to use this strength of his well you would want the ability to attack 1-2 range. Mage kliff has this strength locked down. Honestly you should probably recruit kliff on celica’s route and use mage kliff there.

The only problem with Conrad is that you'll lose your only cavalier unit on Celica's playthrough for another mage with the exact same spell set as Boey and Nomah. Sure you can remedy this situation by turning Atlas into a cavalier, bring Lando (and Emma) into Celica's army or use another farmer's pitchfork. However, it's worth noting that you can't recruit Conrad until the half-way point of chapter 4, while all of Celica's mercenaries join in chapter 3. CHAPTER 5 SPOILER ALERT Hopefully when the DLC for Berkut and Fernand is released they'll have an awesome spell-list, preferably somewhere around the line of Rinea's spells she used during the final battle against Berkut.

I would say Valbar is a decent choice to Fork into mage despite the bad spell lists, since his huge base atk means his Thunders will do a good bit of damage, and his high HP/Base def will keep him afloat for ever. It's certainly an improvement over Staying a Knight in Celica's route and dealing with the desert. The issue is just that if you are forking him, he'd rather go Archer or Merc anyway(though to be fair, that true for almost all units you'd want to reclass in the first place, since their speed is usually the issue).

A lot of reclassed Mage lists got cucked because only those that can naturally become Villagers get their own spell lists...Clerics get it soooo much worse in this game, though. No female character can naturally become a Dread Fighter, so only Faye can reclass into a unique Cleric spell list. Faye, Tatiana, Silque, and Genny are the only really viable Clerics. You could argue for Delthea, but rewarp is really weak mediocre utility compared to what you'd actually want on a cleric. I'm so disappointed more effort wasn't put into making spell lists more diverse and interesting considering the introduction of direct reclassing in this title. Incredible video, though. Easy reclassing is one of my favorite newer features to Fire Emblem, and I'm glad to see an entire video going over team strats and viability surrounding it.

Doubling with Excalibur while holding a draco shield and having good bulk growths is quite potent. It allows him to hybridize into doing both tanking and critting at the same time the two things kliff does best where as when not in sage he can only do one because you can’t equip a shield and a brave weapon but you can equip Draco shield and use Excalibur. Though to be fair kliff can make anything work in post game if you really want him to.

@@ultimaterecoil1136 And the reason for my earlier statement is that Saints can utilize more healing magics than Sages and Priestesses usually have the same lineup of attack magics as Sages, only Priestesses attack with Swords too. Sages can't do either of these. It also doesn't help that you get two units mid game that are in the Mage/Sage lineup who aren't very useful by that point and who only get worse as time goes on (Luthier and Nomah). At best, they can hold their own by tanking (since their defense is usually better than their resistance unlike the other two classes) and they can do lots of damage with Sagittae and heal sometimes with Recover.

If you don't care at all about how your units perform in the beginning of the game and only care about their performance in the longrun then you could promote all the mercenarys that you want to turn into a mage such as Jesse or saber into dread fighters to level 10. At level a dread fighter can become a villager one saving you a pitch fork and giving said unit amazing growths and speed therefore the made will pretty much always double anyone expect some dread fighter

I mean, I never use Sages in this game. Luthier is probably one of the worst units in the game combatively, and Nomah is basically just magic Mycen. The only real benefit to having Sages is Sagittae and only certain people can use it. And by endgame + postgame, Thunder can be just as potent and not as much hp consuming. If you're gonna use mages, then use priestesses for magic offense and then Saints for healing support, cause Sages can't do either very well. Plus, Sages do worse combatively than the priestesses you get. Delthea will outclass Luthier and Mae will usually outclass boey. Nomah is eh. And keep in mind that priestesses also double with swords giving them physical and magical performance. Saints usually come with around 3-4 healing spells while always having the healing nosferatu alongside the more accurate but more hp consuming seraphim. Saints and Priestesses are the better classes by far and since they are female only, I usually just have the males utilize physical classes like the knight, Dreadfighter, and Archer. Especially when you take into account that the dreadfighter is the best class in the game hands down and the main reason one would use the pitchfork in the first place. So yeah, the sage class is pretty much garbage.

Wildly disagree on Saber's placement. Physic is far superior than any combat spell, and a simple Physicbot is better than almost any mage- there's a reason why Genny is better than Mae and Celica, and that Tobin is as good as he is.

Bösil Also, Saber can get 100 hit Angel, due to the Sage skill, and in Celica's route, Monsters are very prevent, and healing is more important too, due to the high amounts of Mages, so...
