I have an audio technica LP120X and it is absolutely fantastic. I got it for around 240 euros and for that price you won't really find anything better. I've sampled from KZbin before and I couldn't get rid of time stretching artifacts in logic, which was the reason I got a record player in the first place. And I have to say that going to record stores, digging through dozens and dozens of records picking up a few, taking them home, then putting them on for the first time and sampling whatever you want to sample is an unbelievable experience.

I worked at a record store for years, and got a lot of experience testing different turntables people brought in to sell. My best advice for people on a budget would be to go for a quality older unit from the 70s or 80s, with a tonearm that has a half-inch mount for the cartridge/needle. There's a lot to choose from in the sub $200 range, and the quality standards from back then make them a much better bang for your buck than new tables you can buy today for that price. Since the half-inch mount is still the dominant standard, you also have a lot of choices for cartridges/needles at all different price ranges if you wanna upgrade the sound quality even further in the future
@Rulon-bo1ig3 жыл бұрын
Seems like good advice but wouldn’t maintenance be an issue with the older tables? Belt changing & and finding parts. These newer tables don’t sound as warm in general but for sampling purposes you would be absolutely fine with recent a direct drive tables from A Technica set up properly with a good cart. I want to say most of us aren’t audio files especially if we’re looking at tables under 450 dollars.
@prufrockrenegade3 жыл бұрын
@@Rulon-bo1ig Maintenance isn't really that bad if you get a quality machine. Changing a belt is actually pretty easy, and I'm sure there's vids on KZbin on how to do it. They still make replacement belts of all sizes too and they're cheap and easy to find online. And a fresh belt should last like a decade if no one's trying to scratch with it. Besides that there isn't too much that goes wrong on a lot of old tables, unless it has an auto-start/auto-return feature, which imho can be more trouble than it's worth. The LP120 is a good choice if I had to get something new, but on the other hand I was selling '80s turntables with better build quality (all metal body etc) for like $100 a few years ago when I worked at the store. Some of them were direct drives too. So there's definitely opportunities to get lower maintenance and a better bang for your buck on the used market, as long as one knows what to look for

@@prufrockrenegade that sounds right! I just bought an old memorex phono preamp for like 15 € of someone and it sounds much better than my new 250€ Cambridge audio phono pre. Very cool comparison @Malo! The only disclaimer I would have made regarding KZbin is: it depends on the source (as in the person who uploads the content). Some stuff is uploaded from source vinyl playing off of poor quality record players; some stuff sounds like it’s a crappy 128 Kbps MP3. Some is CD-quality. There’s just a ton of variables with KZbin content. That aside, the Audio Technica LP60 is a great starter record player (had one myself, though I’ve since upgraded to the AT-LP120X).

My suggestion is an older turntable from the 70s. Been collecting vinyl for well over a decade and got a separate turntable for sampling. My reloop is total crap. The tone arm is so cheap, i wish I copped a Audio Technica instead. And make sure to set it up correctly, that’s the most important part. Balancing the tone arm, setting tracking force, and leveling. Upgrade your needle when you can (ortofon are great.). My JVC TURNTABLE From the 70s blows any other one I’ve heard. Also, the needle/stylus has to be for Djing otherwise you’ll mess it up when you rewind with it on the record.

So I’m currently sampling from KZbin music and the sound is great. Being able to dig around in a record store, buying the record, taking it home and sampling from a real vinyl is just another experience. That’s why now I’m getting a vinyl player. But I set my mind on the pt-01 scratch for the fact that not only do I get to take it with me and use it in stores for digging but apart from sampling I can also get into scratching a little bit. Should be fun over the beats I make. Is the quality really that bad for sampling? I might stick to KZbin music or check out track lib in case... or get a better vinyl player, as I read in the comments, something from the 70’s is a great idea. 🤔

if youre serious about sampling get a turntable that has: a) pitch slider b) a very fast start/stop time via a good direct-drive motor c) a good ($100) cartridge d) a decent budget tier external phono preamp e) a headshell with a longer finger handle since you'll be dropping constantly Being able to set the pitch LIVE while running drums from the MPC over it (w/ a HP/LP filter and EQ) is how I always find samples. Other people insist on a study metal case like Technics SL-1200 or Pinoneer DJ PLX-1000 but thats $1k+ and for sampling it's not a big deal if you put it on a good table and take care of it.

The sound of samples w/ my red Orotofon 2M cartridge + $150 shiit mani (or $50 fosi tube amp depending on the type of sound) is sooo much nice than the stock cartridge I got with my PLX-500 + the built in phono preamp, or the preamp in the MPC Live 2. I see a lot of hiphop producers neglecting that while spending a ton on outboard or vintage gear.

Change the belt in the pt01 . its basically a rubber band or could be the power supply....pt1 ones are really bad quality hence the cheap price. The PT01 needs an input with 1 mega ohms impedance. Your sampling device has a to low input impedance thus creating a mismatch resulting in poor sound
