When Chef Liz and Will invited me to hang out with them and go to some of their favorite restaurants in LA, I was very excited. We set off to eat some amazing food in LA area including tacos, Armenian kabobs and Chinese savory pies.
Featured in this video, and huge thanks to:
Liz Johnson: / __lizjohnson
Will Aghajanian: / waghajanian
Teddy’s Red Tacos: / teddysredtacos
Armin from Mini Kabob: / eatbearded
Jeffrey: / jeffrey_merrihue
Barbara: / barbara_pollastrini
Teddy’s Red Tacos - The first place we ate on this best of Los Angeles food tour is Teddy’s Red Tacos. First of all, Teddy is such a friendly down to earth guy who is passionate about birria, one of my favorite Mexican foods. Serving out of a food truck, we ordered the mixed plate of birria tacos, his made with beef. It was extraordinary, and great to hang out and meet Teddy as well.
Mixed plate - $10
Beijing Pie House - Next we drove East to the Beijing Pie House, another one of Liz’s best favorite restaurants in LA. We ordered a mix of dishes including a variety of dumplings and the highlight was their tripe salad laced in Sichuan pepper oil. If you’re looking for some Northern Chinese dishes, Beijing Pie House is well worth the drive from Central LA.
Total price - $55.70
Mini Kabob - There was one more huge meal we had to eat on this best restaurants in LA food tour. We drove to Glendale where there’s a large population of Armenians, and we met up with Armin, son of the owner of Mini Kabob. Immediately I loved the place, family run, just a small little shop with a few tables, and an ultimately friendly place. They welcomed us in and Armin took care of us from the start, fixing us a mixed meat platter with a little bit of everything. The Armenian kabobs were spectacular, as were all the different salads.
Huge platter - thanks Armin!
Heroic Deli - Finally, to end this restaurants tour of LA, we drove over to meet my friend Jeffrey who is starting a deli in LA called Heroic Deli (www.heroicdeli.com/). Barbara prepared us their signature OMG classic Italian sub, which was unbelievably good and well balanced. When they open in Santa Monica, be sure to stop by for a fantastic sandwich.
Thank you to Liz and Will for taking me around to some of their favorite restaurants in LA, I had an amazing time!

UPDATE: In 2019 Liz Johnson and Will Aghajanian became co-chefs at The Catbird Seat restaurant in Nashville, TN. They were nominated for a James Beard Award in February 2020. Just a month later the group that owns the restaurant let them go. The reason was unexplained, but the current pandemic might've had something to do with it. When this craziness is over I hope they find another good spot soon or open their own eatery. Thank you Mark for introducing us to this couple. Stay safe everyone.

Been going to Mini Kabob for 4years straight. You will never find a place that makes the best Mediterranean food. Hands down the best food ever! They’re very friendly too. The owner (now passed down to the son) talks to his customers like family and treats us like family. If they’re eating watermelon in the back they’ll give some to you freshly cut. Best hospitality you can get at a restaurant! Must try!

This was a great marketing move by Chef Liz Johnson, whether intentional or not. Most older established chefs would've stuck noses in the air at being on KZbin. But by being on this Mark Wiens vlog, Chef Liz is getting exposure to 2.5M viewers with quite a few of those from being around the world and also a younger demographic. Case in point, I never even heard of Chef Liz because I do not read Total Wine and More and nor do I live in the LA area. I am more into fitness and sports but I do enjoy travel Vlogs, especially Mark's. Chef Liz appears relaxed, open, and articulate in her attitude and demeanor versus the stereotypes of chefs like angry British men and narcissistic French men. She is going to translate well to younger generations who are not exposed to cooking.

I used to work just down the road from Mini Kabob in Glendale. Every time the company bought us lunch, we'd get food from there. It was the best kabob ever. Highly recommend the place. I hope they're still in business due to the whole Covid nonsense.

I just went to Beijing Pie House and it was awesome. Had the tripe salad, the pork and leeks ‘patties’ and the pork and onions pie. The pie also came with a big bowl of corn meal soup. You’re suppose to add a little sugar to it. All of it was so good. Thanks for the tip Mark. Can’t wait to try the other places in this video.

After a while though, when your hobby becomes your job, the enjoyment gets sucked out. And judging by how often Mark loses his train of thought when explaining things, I'd guess that he's very very tired from many years of constant travel and video filming and editing. I'm sure it even affects his relationships with his family, but he'd never tell us or show us.
