Two guitar players who should be near or at the top of this list but seem to be missing are John Lennon and The Edge. Since both have 50% song writing share (which is were the real money comes from for musicians) for the entire catalogues of the Beatles and U2 respectively I'm sure they've both made more money than even Keef. Also Bob Dylan is missing, he cashed out for $500m for his back catalogue rights recently.

Nobody really knows to a certain degree how much anyone has , but Keith, Jimmy Page , were rich in the early sixties, most of their money came from writing the music , i would say the top ten richest guitarists have to be , jimmy page, George Harrison , Keith Richards, the edge, Eric Clapton Brian May Pete Towsend, Tony Iomi, Prince, Lindsay Buckinham, Not in that order .

Sixty's entertainers never made the kind of money of today. Lennon Mccartney were millionaires in 1964, and they were the exception. Jagger Richards by mid 60's great money, and certainly by late 60's big money for The Stones. By late late 60's and early 70's big money for The Who and Zep.

The actual numbers are pure guess work and mostly bollocks. But the principle is very simple: the guitar players who make the most money are the ones that write the most popular songs. The way music money works, the record companies take 50% for "material rights". The other 50% goes to "publishing rights" which is were the actual musicians get their money from (aside from gig fees and session work which are one-off payments). The publishing rights to a song are divided in all sorts of ways by agreement but typically they go about 50% to whoever wrote the lyrics and 50% to whoever wrote the melody and the chords. Sometimes people are given a share if they contribute a particular riff or solo, if they are famous/exceptional. So Kieth Richards is rich because he has written dozens of kick arse songs that have sold in massive numbers over 50 years. It is much, much more difficult to write a kick arse song than it is to play a fancy guitar solo.
