Hi Julian. Just caught this video. There is no comparison for good leather saddles. I've ridden Brooks B17 and 17N since '64. (That's 1964 not 1864). I've ridden 10-12000 miles per year with no discomfort. 'Tried many high-end non-leather ones to no satisfaction. I borrowed a friends Berthoud and liked it as well. The two countries that have great leather are represented here. They each make several designs that surely will please anyone. Thanks for the info and efforts!

How about a video of the food bank in Croydon and a few comments from some of the folks who are running it and receiving the food parcels. Maybe a few cyclists could deliver the parcels.

Hi Julian. I don't want this to be one of those I use this and you use that comments, but I've used a Brookes B17 for about 5 yrs now and they do in time mould to your 'shape.' I know that we're all different and that seats are such personal things, but I've discovered that I don't necessarily need to wear padded cycle shorts when using this well worn leather saddle. Just an observation in case anyone thinks that I'm talking out of my Arse/Ass/Bottom/Butt etc.

Hi Julian, it is a joy to watch your reviews. Everyone has their own priorities about what to upgrade. Contact point is worth investing. I changed tyres and pedal, so next will be saddle.

Hi Julian! I tried the Gilles Berthoud Aravis with the cutout twice (yes twice!) the reason is because I thought I might have judged it to hasty the first time but it turned out there is a specific part of their construction that doesn’t fit well with my arse...eeeem buttocks I mean! I found the leather to be thicker than the Brooks saddles which is not a bad thing, as eventually it will mold to shape, but what I noticed is that the plastic part where the rails are fixed on the back side of the saddle is curved in such a way that it takes a good part of the upper section of the saddle making that part rock solid hard. The brooks although they have this part in metal which should be harder, is actually thinner and takes up less of the upper part of the saddle allowing it for more of a hammock like feeling. I thought the first time I was just eager for the saddle to break in and was not patient enough, but it turned out that the problem persisted the second time as well. But like you said, it is a pretty different thing to anyone and there is only one way to go, try until you get it right! Thanks for the great vids and carry on!

Hey loving your videos and I agree with most of your opinions too especially on gravel bikes. I have a fully rigid hybrid bike which really is a road bike with flat bars and great tyre clearance which probably makes a better gravel bike. I'm currently searching for my perfect saddle which made this video super helpful! **Goto **2:56** peeps for the start of the start of the saddle stuff!**

This "ought to like something" is the greatest commercial scheme of modern times. It goes for saddles too. After trying at least 10 "should have" saddles I could not manage to sit more than 3 hours without feeling like a wounded war heroe and I only weigh 175lb. Then one day I took the nerd plunge and tried a city style saddle. It was pretty firm in that its softness was similar to a regular saddle but the trick was that it was wider than other saddle at 7.8". Holly smokes, what a revelation, what I needed was that extra sitting area so that the weight of my body was not so concentrated on such a small area. I have now used this saddle for thousands of km's including some very long trips where, believe it or not, I do not even use padded shorts. I can ride the saddle for 8 hours, in very hot weather at times, and still bike to the restaurant at the end of the day without feeling like I am sitting on a bed of nails. I now believe in conspiricies and the regular thin saddle is one of them. Keep up the good videos.

That’s how I feel about the brooks saddle I have, I like it but don’t love it. I feel I have to work hard to find just the right sweet spot to be comfortable. I feel like I need much more area to sit on

@@ourclarioncall Brooks saddles mold completely to the area between your sitbones including developing a raised ridge in the middle of the saddle. This is completely against what doctor advice which is no pressure between the buttocks. That can't be healthy for you.

Love your videos Julian. I was thinking about getting tubeless tyres and a gravel bike, but I'll hold off the urge after hearing reviews from Uncle Julian. We've copied most things from Mother England including spelling, but have dispensed with your 19th century system of weights and measures, thank goodness. So if you are referring to the location of Australia, it would be grammatically correct to refer to us being at the "Arse" end of the world rather than the "Ass" end. LOL

Hi Julian, I also have a Galibier saddle and was the guy who suggested setting it with the nose slightly upwards so your sitbones fall into the correct position. I do, however, feel you have missed one important aspect. It smells great dunnit !

Oh way back when you did a thing on the first one. I had just purchased mine and had stumbled across a comment in a forum where someone had the goods on how to effectively set these saddles and why. He said “it feels counterintuitive to do so but.... by raising the nose slightly, you force your sitbones into the cradle where they’re meant to be. Otherwise your just sliding forward and sitting on the nose” It made sense to me. Oh and, yes we say Arse just like you.

Doing mental arithmetic has to be the most "Old Skool" thing I've ever seen on a video! Be careful, you might frighten younger viewers. We have lots of gravel in Yorkshire, even a track that goes from South Yorkshire to Teeside we call the A19 (on some parts a MTB might be more appropriate).

£158 isn't silly money, not for THE most important part of a bike, as a pain in the arse/ass/derriere (what some Canadians would say perhaps, or maybe it's just 'mon ass' in that part of the world...) is nothing but misery itself. When you compare it with what some people spend on other items, like R*ph* stuff, or even some tyres, then £158 on a good looking, comfortable saddle that will last a lifetime is money well spent. However, three of my bikes have Charge Spoons fitted as they are well enough made, cheap (my first cost a mere £18, the latest £24) and are all day comfortable for my pert hind quarters. One has a Spa Nidd leather saddle that was an absolute brute of a thing, a beast of a bum perch to begin with, but now at about 600 miles in, it's as comfy as a very comfy thing. Cheaper than a Brooks - just as good looking. The Fatbike is the only one of my 5 bikes still wearing the saddle it was delivered with, a WTB thing of some sort, but again, is all day comfy and apparently well made too. Wigs? The real issue I find is getting the correct TOG rating for the time of year. That and a strong glue for the gusty winter season... Good stuff Hutchings old chap!

Sorry, one other comment.... A few years ago I beta tested a C-17 for Brooks. After approximately 2000 miles, I could not find the precised comfort compared to the B17. Like you, the unnatural give and fabric cover just didn't work like biological leather. That's the reason most aquarians and motor bke ridders prize real leather. It has that magical compliance to our bones and tissue. BTW, I'm hair challenged and just revel in being areo dynamic....🤪

An idea for an entrepruener... develop a machine that would take a photocopy of one's buttocks as it would sit on a bicycle saddle. Then...it would determine the best support arrangement to distribute one's weight onto a customized saddle, delivered later. Like how the old(?) Dr. Scholl Shoe Insert machines would graphically show a person's foot pressure points, to best suggest the proper Insert. Better, if such a machine would video the pedal movement interaction to provide a dynamic analysis, for better fit. Just a thought. If it's produced & it succeeds, send my "cut" to the Republicans Against Trump organization, & we'll be square. Psst...I wrote TRUMP's name on my saddle. Seems sooo...justified! :-)
