Hi, just bought the 2003 Catalina Mark II shown for $50K ($59K list). Needs a new main sail but surveyor said closest to a new boat he's seen. Only 671 engine hours. Seller agreed to pay for 6 months on the hard so I can work on details until after hurricane season. I haven't been a Catalina fan in the past but this boat changed my mind. Keel bolts look new! Thank you Lady K Sailing for all you do!

Just viewed this from Fort Pierce, two days before we haul our Beneteau Oceanis 473 after a winter cruise in the Bahamas. You are so right about the dinghy and the solar! Last December we upgraded our solar to a bit over 1,100 watts and had ice cream throughout our cruise. The batteries went into float mode everyday before noon! And the dinghy is powered by a 25hp Yamaha. With four people on board we could quickly and safely travel pretty long distances to explore or visit a beach bar or restaurant. Just remember to have a portable VHF aboard, as well as a really good anchor with plenty of rode, and other safety gear! You don’t want to drift out to sea if the engine dies on you…

My pick is a Privilege 39 Catamaran listed at $130k. Plenty of solar, huge davits and twice the room and speed of a mono puttering along at 9 knots. lol

Catalina 34's coming in at 11-12000 pounds might be brochure weight. They routinely come in around 15000-16000 on the crane when launched and hauled out. Forget the Hunter, and whatever marginal if any 'comfort' they're supposed to have, if you can afford a Catalina, buy it. They sail better than 'ok', and they are very comfortable, with more than enough room.

Question: Other channels have brought up "noise" as being a problem on sailboats. If you are a liveaboard or costal-cruiser you have the same problem if the boat is too loud to sleep on it impacts your readiness. Is sound a problem on all sailboats? Does it have to do with the weight of the boat? Blue water boats have the same problem as pocket cruisers?

Been following the Wynns, and one thing they hated about their Leopard catamaran were the curvy plexiglass windows. When they hazed over, had to be replaced at great cost by a custom shop. They pointed out that this is a fault of the Juneau's as well. Is there a Beneteau model that would fit the bill. Watching their episodes in New Zealand where they had to carefully remove the existing windows/portholes (needed for molds for the new ones) and then prep the openings was painful.

I am a Long time subscriber, I love your videos. I was wondering what you think of the hopyacht 30? I have hoped you would touch on it at some point, but you never have, though i understand its a little outside the usual boats you look at. Thanks for your time and keep up the great work!
Agree with having a fast dinghy. We carry a 10.5 ft with a 25 hp. We've had five adults and a 95 pound dog on board it for a 3 mile trip. No problems. The one thing I don't understand is what appears to be a trend toward ribs with center consoles. I have on different occasions been aboard boats that had the CC ribs. If I can avoid them I will. Here are the main reasons why. They are more difficult to board when the rib is bouncing in a choppy anchorage. I always ended up banging my knees and shins on the console. The console takes up room that could be used for cargo or people. Because of the additional weight brought on by the console, seats, battery, etc. they are very difficult to drag onto and off of the beach. And god help you if it gets swamped while pulled up on the beach. This happened to me once. It took 5 guys to manage to get it up on it's side to empty the water. Lastly we carry ours face down on the foredeck when making offshore passages (for coastal cruising it stays on the davits of our 80's battle axe.). Don't know how we would do that with a CC.

Hi Tim, fellow Canadian. I'm hanging out in Florida mostly with an eye towards doing some engineering work in Grenada and the Caribbean including Guyana. I'm Guyanese/Canadian. I note that you really like the heavy duty, full keel sailboats such as the Island Packet. I find that persuasive. Here is my question: Would the orca attacks on sail boats near Bay of Biscay and the Gibraltar area succeed in causing substantial to such a boat? Is that a relevant factor that could influence the decision on what boat to buy? I really enjoy your videos and your unique delivery - very much leadership style. Cheers,

Depends, how many hrs for the engine, chainplates, riggings or even when the sails were replace. This 4 things can run well above 50K. Do the vessel has an AIS, batteries and inverter. That may add an another 30K. We will not even talk about a bottom job and life raft or dinghy. Suddently the 48K became an easy $150K drama and broken dream. WTH happens if you capsize?! Obviously I’m new to this.. but what do you do if you’re in the middle of a passage and cap solo?!
@LadyKSailing7 ай бұрын
Hi! I can understand your concern over this - first of all it's almost impossible for a sailboat to flip over or "capsize" - the only exception might be in gale force winds, hurricane etc (which you won't be sailing in at all hopefully, let alone solo) It's more likely you might accidentally lose your footing and fall off - some people use a harness or tether to literally tie themselves to the boat In the very unlikely event the boat gets a hole in it and starts leaking, make sure to have a VHF radio and call for help, also it's a good idea to have a dinghy so you can jump in that if you have to Here's the most important thing, especially if you're a beginning sailor - try to always go out with more experienced ones at first, if you absolutely have to sail solo - keep a careful eye on the weather ahead of time, DO NOT go out in bad weather, always wear a PFD - and be super careful with your footing - stay fairly close to shore - have a VHF radio, in short use common sense and you will be fine, happy sailing! :)
