True - there would have to be for it to be in any way realistic. The % of non-Slavs in the Red Army during the war was believe to be something like 20-25% the soldiers, many Asiatic peoples from Siberia and he Russian East, as well as central Asia.

I’m happy to see many Central Asian soldiers amongst the reds. Many of my own people, (the Kalmyk Mongols of southern Russia) were unfortunately drafted by the reds. Tajiks, Uzbeks, Tatars, and Kazakhs fought alongside us as well.

IMO He's the voice of reason of the Russian soldiers, the only one who keep his feet on the floor. I bet he also did not interest in 'trying' the German woman. And remember he's the one who reported Andrei to higher Russian authority for saving the woman (Nina Hoss) in the apartment. But not before he reminded Andrei privately (whispering in his ear) the consequences of Andrei's act, means he also got heart.

@@shaunmichael916 They were pretty terrible at fighting in the beginning, also woefully ill equipped. Their army was a few decades behind the Germans technologically speaking. Not sure if the stated casualties included civilians, because that would greatly increase the number of dead. The Germans were fucking brutal towards civilians during the invasion and the Russians were working on scorched earth tactics, leaving nothing for the Germans and thus nothing for their own civilians that were left behind. The Russians shaped up though. Nothing drives human innovation like war.

Long story short the only valid argument that can be presented is weather or not the Russians fought the Germans using the right methods because we all know that isn’t true.. the Russians killed their own by the millions to gain a couple of km of land back from the Germans is that smart?? Scorched earth my ass the only time it worked was in Stalingrad because of the winter storm but the Germans were getting food,supplies from airdrops. The scorched earth tactic was a waste. Now the Russians won and I never denied that it simply asking weather or not the Russian generals were plain stupid or just didn’t want to think about it so they can go back to drinking more vodka.

I ran training for 0351’s in the Marines. This included the flame thrower. It has a range of about 50’ and about 20-30 seconds of fuel and weighs about 50#. It is most effective against enclosed spaces. The flame sucks the oxygen out of the enclosure. Extremely cumbersome in MOUT operations

D and I'll lump the Italians and Japanese with the Nazis. Was Stalin evil? Yes, 100% agree. But what the average Soviet soldier stood for was better than pretty much any other nations soldiers. Their sacrifices should always be remembered but instead people act like the Nazis were some sort of heroes. Don't believe me look at the other comments.

D no, Stalin killed three times as many as Hitler. But the average Soviet soldier fought for home, equility, and what they saw as freedom. The average American soldier was a racist and xenophobic. The average German hated Jews just as much as Hitler. The average Brit loved aparteid and didn't care for Indians at all. Japanese wanted to murder and enslave the Chinese, etc. The Soviet regime WAS evil. The average Soviet was better morally than anyother though.

My father was a part of Russian Victory over Germany. He finished month yearly April 9 1945 Kenigsberg. Since I was kid remember his.medal. "ZA vzaytie Kenigsberga". He died already in.2003. Because the Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, & Tajikistan we’re part of Soviet Union. Not only that but the Asians groups in Russia such as Yakuts, Tuvans, and other Turkic & Mongolic groups were part of the Red Army. And all ex gestapo and collaborators went into the party and became communists. All of the pilots that fought nazis in RAF were sent to labor camps after country became communist. that was same fate for Poles czechs and others. Only western countries were liberated. Rest suffered worsefate.

@@kessler682 more closer to one million, which is still a lot. 80,000 perished & approx 280,000 wounded. It is always difficult to get exact numbers due to the nature of this battle. The Russians eventually succeeded. But sheer numbers don’t always cut it. Large numbers of troops, need supplies. And in a battle such as Berlin. Motivation was massive. And the soviets had that in abundance. Revenge, a belief in their conviction, fear. Probably all of those reasons. Fighting in built up areas also requires top level fitness. It’s unlike a conventional battle. Sheer hand to hand combat

Michael Jackson I’m no expert, but sources do mention that the Red army used flamethrowers extensively while advancing house to house so they could clear out snipers, panzerfaust operators etc. (Though inadvertedly killing many civillians in the process)
