Not sure if the stated casualties included civilians, because that would greatly increase the number of dead. The Germans were fucking brutal towards civilians during the invasion and the Russians were working on scorched earth tactics, leaving nothing for the Germans and thus nothing for their own civilians that were left behind. The Russians shaped up though. Nothing drives human innovation like war.

The Russians eventually succeeded. But sheer numbers don’t always cut it. Large numbers of troops, need supplies. And in a battle such as Berlin. Motivation was massive. And the soviets had that in abundance. Revenge, a belief in their conviction, fear. Probably all of those reasons. Fighting in built up areas also requires top level fitness. It’s unlike a conventional battle. Sheer hand to hand combat
