DSMBs can also serve as additional floatation/buoyancy device at the surface.
@AzulUnlimited
@AzulUnlimited 3 жыл бұрын
That's true, as a extra safety device, if you get lost, drift way etc... a big DSMB can save your life, not only to be visible from far away, also to hold on. Great comment, thanks!
@coyoteran
@coyoteran 2 жыл бұрын
I put the DSMB right up there with the trifecta Mask/Fins/Snorkel. You can (should) use one when you are snorkelling and you will always have a big visual marker to let the world know where you are when snorkelling and diving. Then learn how to deploy the thing at depth. So many divers just watch their dive leader deploy the DSMB when what they should really be watching is how they deploy so they can do it themselves.

Totally. I'm surprised at how many people in California don't use theirs or don't even take it with them on a dive. I make sure to teach my students how to do it in courses (or even if they're just fun diving with me) because so many have never even tried.

Good points Sarah. I dive mostly in UK waters where it's cold so am envious of your warm water diving. I would ad a cargo net or a pocket to your acessories so you have somewhere to put this kit when you are not using it.

I´m in California at the moment so no more warm water for me until next year!! I use to carry them on a pouch but that's with my sidemount configuration, and I have to say that last week I did some modifications because now with gloves was difficult to open and close the zip. Aitor like to use a scubapro shorty with tec pockets on the sides while diving in back mount with single tank!

That thing with the string you had clipped to your SMB looks just like one I 3D printed this winter. I only has pink plastic thread at the time, so it came out looking just like yours. Good news is it's easy to find in a bag full of mostly black dive gear. And by the way, what you had there was not a reel, it's a spool (reels have handles and cranks, spools do not). My least favorite accessory here is the noisemaker. I go under the water to get away from all the noise, and tourists with rattles and air-powered sirens drive me insane. Sometimes my own bubbles are even too loud for me, but I can't afford a rebreather (yet, LOL). I don't consider the computer an accessory; it's more of an essential, though I tend to run mine in gauge mode most of the time so I can use it as an input for the real computer inside my head. It also makes a nice tool for logging (if I ever took the time to transcribe the data to paper). I feel naked without a compass, even though I almost never use mine. The thing is, when you do need it, you REALLY need it, so maybe that should be considered an essential as well.
@AzulUnlimited

The reel and spool distinction: Thank you, you are 100% correct that the thing we use for SMBs are spools, not reels. I always misspeak on that one because around here we speak a lot of spanish and carrete can be translated as both reel and spool 🤣 I hear you on the noisemaker thing, and although I feel the same way, I also am thankful I have it when guiding here in Komodo. I gotta say though, way too many people go crazy with it. Completely agree about computers and compasses being essentials, but this video is made for beginners and we just wanted to include them so that people look into getting those items for themselves. Way too many divers don't own either one and it would be nice to see that change. Thank you for watching!

Loving your video's and advise but I have a question but may sound silly. On my SMB there is a metal ring on top. Is it a good idea to put a small strobe light on it? So far you have saved me cash is no split fins for me.
@AzulUnlimited
@AzulUnlimited 2 жыл бұрын
Glad to save a diver from split fins 🤪 I've never put anything on top of my smb and a strobe probably won't be helpful. During the day, it won't be seen and you don't typically use smbs for night dives (your dive lights show your location quite well). You could put something reflective there? Usually divers attach that kind of thing to their bcds but that could be an option. I usually go with keeping things plain and simple 🤙 hope that helps!

Super excited 😁 what is your opinion about the hydros pro ? It seems to be pretty good but its twice the price of regular bcds. Also I'm very concerned about the "New guy with brand new equipment" thing. I'm very confident about the water but I'm a very conservative diver I try not to fall into the trap of feeling too confident with my diving skills.
@AzulUnlimited
@AzulUnlimited 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! We haven't been diving with the hydros pro but I (Sarah) have the ladyhawk and I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of it. However, that's mostly because I'm an instructor and I want real pockets and prefer the jacket style of bcd for teaching over a wing. I have to say though, I bought the ladyhawk 7 or 8 years ago and after many many dives, i've never had any issues with it. Honestly, the hydros pro looks nice, but I'm a big fan of not spending all your money on equipment and using that extra money to go diving. I really like basic BCDs from the big guy companies (especially scuba pro and aqualung) because they last a long time. As always, it's up to you and how you like the fit and set up of the equipment so i would recommend going into a local shop to check it out. In the meantime, you can see a comparison video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/haLXqpqujZqXjpY These guys do great gear reviews!

with sadness I see you recommend a pointer Stick witch is illegal in most of warm water counties, like Thailand and Philippines, a lot of divers brake to many corals with those :( if it for noice use a boltsnap or a tankball,
@AzulUnlimited
@AzulUnlimited Жыл бұрын
As always, we have to follow local regulations. Where I have worked, they are allowed but no one uses them to poke coral. At least not under my watch💪

I disagree about the noise makers and using my pointer instead. In low viz, my Buddy and the dive guide separated from me. I had to do the rotate and make noise to be located or surface with SMB. It would have been a hassle to unclip my pointer and tap on tank for thos minutes compared to just shaking my hanging rattle. My buddy's has a different sound than mine so we can tell them all apart. I have tried banging knives etc and watched people drop them too. Should be the dive guide's call.

fins! save so much stamina and air after getting the right fins
@AzulUnlimited
@AzulUnlimited 4 жыл бұрын
Here in Komodo is super important to choose the right fins to dive with the strong currents, if they are too big for you, you burn your air and is so heavy to kick that at the end people don´t do it at all... but if they are too small you don´t move enough water to propulse yourself. With no doubt one of the most important pieces of equipment!!

Pointers, tank bangers and magnetic shakers are really annoying in the wrong hands. There’s even air horns that can be mounted on BCD inflator 😖 None of these are really needed to get someone’s attention in my humble opinion. A good torch is a better way of signalling and for pointing things out. DSMB is an essential piece of kit.

Here in Asia is insane the bad use of many of those accessories in a very bad way, to make noise or manipulate aquatic life... We are planing to do another video about how to use them properly. Thanks for watching us!!

@@AzulUnlimited last year I was diving in Maldives. At one of the times, I decided just to snorkel (we were looking for a whale shark and I thought it will be faster for me to get on and off the boat with just a snorkel, mask and fins) at some point, I was about a km from the shore and the boat just left. I wish I had an air horn then... The point is that any type of equipment should be used for a specific task (drawing your buddies attention with an air horn just to ask him to take your picture, is a valid reason smack someone :)) A great advice to to buy second hand equipment. It is not always possible to test stuff before you buy. This way, you can save some money in case you decide not to use the item you bought. Also, there are A LOT of people who buy new equipment the minute they done with the OW course and then try to sell it. This way you can get good prices on a practically new equipment. One last thing, get a SAD (save a dive ) kit.

Noise makers should be prohibited unless your like an instructor or dive guide and even those I like to take away from them.
@AzulUnlimited
@AzulUnlimited 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, mmm not even allowed for dive guides, sometimes they are the worse and specially new Instructors/guides totally stressed out guiding people, and is totally understandable the stress but for that just stay closer to your divers, and use the noise maker to point out something swimming fast, not nudibranchs...
