All dogs have to go for a car ride at some point and picking the best seat belt for dogs to use in your car is essential. In this video, I'm comparing the most popular brands to find the best dog seat belt for cars, test them and show you how they fair against each other. These are the products I've tested:
- Vastar (amzn.to/30QtALW)
- Sleepypod Clickit (amzn.to/2LSCXGq)
- EzyDog (amzn.to/2LWmWzA)
Extensive written comparison here: topdogtips.com/...
Most enjoy going for joy rides with their owners, but some only get in the car when it's time to go to the vet. Whether your pooch always rides shotgun or he only goes in the vehicle when he has an appointment, having the best seat belt for dogs is a must.
"One thing the Sleepypod ClickIt Utility Dog Safety Harness offers that no similar product does is an anchor system that reduces lateral movement by holding your pet's back end in place. Your vehicle does need to have a baby seat latch system, which all vehicles manufactured after 2003 are required to have."

Loved watching Molly! But just wanted to comment that I did get the sport version of Sleepy Pod for my mini schnauzer 2 years ago, specifically for its safety and passing the crash-test. Unfortunately, my pup, who was then about 5-6 mos old, absolutely hated it!! With the seat belt threading through the back, it basically was pushing him down, forcing him to just lay down (like the lap belt lays across your lap). And I'm sure the chest piece offers a lot of protection but it's pretty rigid with hardly any give, and can't imagine it being comfortable. Not to mention the heavy buckles in the back. Needless to say, he developed a huge dislike for anything touching his back, be it a harness or a coat (he freezes and crouches funny). Fast forward today, 2 years later, despite his love to go out for walks, he hides under the table as soon as he hears his leash and harness jingle (at least, he doesn't crouch anymore).

The SleepyPod is a very good seatbelt harness.......but......the straps at the adjustment point will slip continuously. I have had the SleepyPod Clickit, the Sports Harness, and the Terrain Harness. The adjustment would never stay put. I contacted the company about the issue several times. I finally returned the Terrain Harness (plus, the Terrain Harness was too thick, bulky, and heavy). I still use the Sports Harness, but had to sew the straps in place to keep them from becoming loose. I also still have the Clickit, but I is so cumbersome and time consuming to use. When I do use it, I do so without using the bottom straps that connect to the back slit in the seat. Also, the Clickit sits high up on my dogs neck..I just can’t seem to find a seatbelt harness that is both comfortable and excellent in safety.

Ezydog now have a crash tested Australian, UK and USA certified chest plate harness called the Drive harness. It is made from seatbelt webbing and the seatbelt threads through handles on the harness. It is far safer than the ezy dog harness shown in the video (the clip attaching the seatbelt to the D ring on the harness has been shown to break on crash tests even at low speed impacts = projectile dog).

Yep, I bought the Ezydog Drive Harness two years ago, and frankly it's by far the best harness I've ever had in 50 years of dog ownership. Its design is pure genius and whoever came up with the mag-lok buckle should get an award. I've varied how the harness is attached to the seatbelt by using a proper, weight rated mountaineering carabiner attached around the diagonal length of the seatbelt and clipped through the harness loops. Much quicker and easier, and gives the dog room to move without compromising safety. BTW after two years of use the harness is still in as new condition despite daily use, including Paddy, a Brittany, doing extensive bush bashing. The quality breast plate protects him from being injured if he were to run into a stake and is so comfortable that he can wear it all day. Further, the double o-ring lead anchor on the back of the harness has stopped him from pulling on the lead because if he tries his front feet get lifted, so he just doesn't even bother any more. Seriously, this is the best harness on the planet, a brilliant piece of design. You will not believe the peace of mind it brings, knowing that your dog is protected as well as can be.

In the past week, TWO cars have almost hit me. One of the instances included my 100 lb boy slamming into the dashboard. 😮😢 Thankfully, he did not receive any injuries, just very shaken up as he’s a very tender hearted boy! I don’t feel I will be as lucky next time, and it would be heartbreaking to him not to “go bye bye” with mama ever again! Soo, I’m here to get some info on diff types and what will work best for my boy! Thanks for all this info! He will never ever be in a moving vehicle again without being restrained, not because of me but because I will never forgive myself knowing I allowed my babies in harms way! You never know what other drives you will meet on the road. He won’t like it much but better him a little mad with me than something tragic to happen. We have a trip planned in 3 weeks, and the babies will def have to comes as I can’t travel without my big boy (overnight separation anxiety is real folks, no other anxiety unless Im not home shortly after dark, so def have to find the best one for him soon)The risk is just not worth it! My babies have always been restrained, and so from now on my furbabies will be as well! Safe travels everyone! 🩵💜🩵

The first two you show are car RESTRAINTS and only designed to stop the dog jumping around in the car and to be contained. In an accident they WILL fail and the dog will be injured (you can easily look up crash tested videos for these). Sleepypod Click-It harnesses are actual crash harnesses which can save the dogs life in event of an accident, it's comparable to us wearing a seatbelt, the others aren't. EzyDog have brought out their own crash harness called the EzyDog Drive Harness. I wouldn't reccomend using a restraint harness even if sold as a safety harness, as if you do your research, you'll find there have been "dog car safety harnesses" on the market but when independently crash tested the dummy dog actually ended up being decapitated because of the harness. ONLY use a crash harness, or crate your dog! My GSD is a service dog and when getting into cars that aren't mine or my mums that are decked out for her safety and with her crash harness, she's trained to lay in the footwell of the backseat where she will not become a projectile and is in the safest possible place she can be.

I'm wondering about the standard harness itself. those with metal clips that interlock can be difficult to put on or remove. The plastic clips that you squeeze to engage/disengage are much easier, but will they hold fast in an accident in which force is so high? Any thoughts on that? Thanks for this video.

It was only a few weeks ago that I actually learned that the first example (strap from seatbelt to the dog's collar) was dangerous, and actually not legal. My daughter and our 2 dogs (Boof the Labrador and Skip the Kelpie X) were invited to her friend's Border Collie's 1st Birthday party. There were about 10 dogs there, all wearing harnesses. I then learned why, and found out that one of the girls there with her dog had been fined a couple of $hundred for just having the collar to seatbelt strap. I was mortified, so upon leaving, I went straight to the petshop to purchase harnesses ... hoping that I wasn't going to be pulled over by Police and fined! Sure, they are more time-consuming to get into the car, and gone are the days when they come with me when picking up the kids from training/school/parties when they quickly jump in the car and off we go, but at least now I know they are safe.

It’s also a lot easier to guide your dogs while wearing a harness. And just imagine how much more comfortable than leading & being pulled at the neck! Once we used our first one, we’ve never used collars since. Not to mention, leaving collars on pets when not supervised is very dangerous. I’ve known several to be injured & even killed by some kind of freak accident that could have been avoided without collar. Harnesses these days are very easy to add phone numbers, names, addresses, etc in case pet gets loose & lost. And impossible for them to remove unlike collars. I try to inform everyone I can because lots of people just don’t know. Sometimes unless something happens, you just never think about it. But with my love for furbabies, I just want to ensure none of them ever have to experience any tragedies like that when they can be avoided, and avoid the huge heartbreak we furmoms would experience! (There’s no pain like it that I’ve ever experience thus far in life) Hope you & your furbabies are well! God bless! 🩵💜🩵💜
