I ride horses and this reminds me of how much effort goes into finding the right tack for your horse. It is so wonderful to see someone taking dog anatomy, comfort, and movement this seriously because it makes a huge difference. My sweet Norwegian elkhound mix, Otis, needs a new harness and I appreciate you putting out such comprehensive and useful guidelines!!

I bought a no-pull harness that's really easy to slip over my dog's head and then clip under her chest. I chose it because she has a tendency to get scared of everything. She got scared of some rustling flowers and nearly bolted into a business street (She's 50% American Pit Bull, 20% German Shephard, 100% Chicken.) Thank God she had this on because it actually sent her falling to the ground so she didn't get run over. Also, most of the no-pull harnesses I saw also have a clip on the back to use once you teach them not to pull any more.

I’m so sorry I just watched the video about losing Rancho. I’m so sorry. Here is something that helped me, after losing my soul dog in April. Our animals are more than just our pets - they are our fiercest protectors our tolerant therapists, our triest and most loyal friends. In a world where everyone leaves, they show us what it means to stay. They remind us that some hearts will always love us, even when we feel unworthy. They are the first to forgive and the first to forget. They reassure us that our mistakes do not define us and that we are capable and deserving of love, even if we are flawed. They are always excited to see us, even if we are temperamental. They know how to have fun, but also recognize when it is time to console. They wipe away our tears, heal our broken hearts and fill an emptiness we didn't even know existed. Our animals remind us what unconditional love truly means. They assure us that real love isn't circumstantial. There are no conditions. There are no rules. There is no fine print - there is only love. Hold on to your pets, because they will never leave your side. Because they will show you how to love again. Because they truly love you just the way you are.

Really good video straight to the point and lots of info, I've had dogs all my life and have become a bit neardy about harnesses after having some dogs that were hard to find a fitting harness for, but I've never seen such clear examples with how much certain harnesses affects the dogs way to walk. For a larger dog around waist hight that pulls I would suggest a harness with a handle preferably a y front but they are not so common, that way you can just grabb the handle and get a lot more control when needed. It can also help to position the dog correctly when training.

I really liked your description of the various dog harnesses. I have a Shepherd mix and she loves bike joring. We both are new to the sport. I understand Shepherds have a tendency to have hip problems later in life. Is an adjustable harness or a x-backed harness the best for a shepherd’s hips?

After watching your clearly illustrated explanation about how the dog's shoulders need to move freely, my eyes were opened and I abandoned my plan to buy the Julius K9 harness. Instead I went for one of your recommendations, the Hurtta padded Y harness, and I am extremely happy with it! So is my dog! She is a shelter rescue with some issues and needs the extra safety of a harness. I never liked harnesses before because I thought they encourage dogs to pull, but that is not happening. She is so comfortable in it and moves freely on or off leash and doesn't pull at all. We both feel more secure and relaxed. The padding is great and the chest strap is WELL behind her elbows. The design is simple, not bulky, and just works! I'm so glad I watched your video! Thank you!

Using the two finger gap method with a non-stretch strap across the back can result in damage to the dog's back if your dog is of a configuration where the chest expands considerably during exertion such as running full speed. As the chest expands the strap is pulled down into the back, stressing the spine.

This was a very informative video and one of the few I have seen that actually explain and show the no pull front clip in use. I was wondering if it was ok to use because it does seem like it interferes with the dogs front leg even when they are not pulling. It sounds like it is ok to use when my dog has lots of energy and pulls, but when he’s mellow I can use the top hook as a traditional harness. Plus I learned so much. Thank you! 👍🏼😊

I have seen that. It doesn't change the shape of the chest strap though. I know, I know. Many poeple swear by it. I just wanted to show how it affects a dog's movement. I think for short walks it's not gonna do any harm.

I think my comments got deleted as I moved my old youtube channel to a new one. Watching your videos helped me choose the best harness for my dog, and as your recommendation - I chose the Line Harness Grip. I also checked out your review on Julius K9 Y-Harness and decided with Line harness because my dog has very narrow chest. Thank you again for your response and the good reviews. Looking forward to your videos and Rancho :)

Very helpful thank you! I believe that a front clip harness is better than using just a collar during training, to save the dog's neck and throat from damage. I know it sounds a bit silly, but I rather my dog's gait change a bit, instead of having a trachea or throat injuries. Ideally, the best way to train loose leash walking is on a backclip harness, but a front clip is the next best. You can actually get y shaped front clip harnesses, unlike the one at 10:35, that one has the restrictive strap on the chest. I don't believe in those. Y shaped front clip harnesses like those from Ruffwear, Perfect Fit, or Balance Blue 9, do not restrict movement very much. It's actually been proven now that harnesses do not cause pulling. Harnesses make pulling a bit easier because they don't restrict breathing or cause pain/discomfort like when pulling on a collar, but what's important to remember is that the training is what gets the dog to walk nicely, not the tool. The tool is meant as a safety device so that during training, their sensitive throats and faces won't be damaged. Even if a tool is used to train loose leash walking, it often will not train the desired behavior entirely. Training is the key, the harness is like a seatbelt. We wear seatbelts over our chest and torso, not our necks.

I appreciate your video, now I’m more confused than ever though, I was just going to order any old halter because my vet told me my dog could possibly have a trachea collapse so she recommended a halter but now I do not know which one would be best for that situation, can you recommend a type of harness that would be best for her?

This is the most useful information about harnesses. Can’t thank you enough. Could you please tell me what type of harness should I use for my 45 days old gsd? Thanks in advance

Glad it was helpful! For such a young pup, any adjustable Y-shaped harness will do.

Thank you for this very detailed video. I am horrified that I did not do the research first before just going to the local pet store to pick up a harness that looks like it fits. The Non-Stop brand looked like the best option for my dog. I love him to pieces and want him to be comfortable and secure.

Hello, thank you for the video! Do you have an opinion on the 2Hounds Freedom harness - I see it recommended a lot, but I'm now noticing it does sit across the shoulder so we should probably switch our dog to a different harness? What do you think of Ruffwear? Our dog is young and we're still training her not to pull when she gets too excited. She chokes herself on the collar.
