Best Shotgun Mic for DSLR

Testing the RØDE Videomic Pro vs the RØDE videomic Go vs the Saramonic Vmic Pro to find the best shotgun mic for vlogging and the best shotgun mic for DSLR and travel videos.

In this shotgun mic review video I put each of the microphones through a series of side-by-side tests and let you decide for yourself what the best shotgun mic for vlogging is.
In the first test I compare the RØDE Videomic Pro vs. the RØDE Videomic Go vs. the Saramonic Vmic Pro at a distance of 5 feet on my DSLR, and play a song from the speakers.
I continue with a few more tests using the +20db and the high frequency pass filter features on the RØDE Videomic Pro and Saramonic Vmic Pro.
Then I head outside to record ambient sounds to see how they're recorded on my Sony DSLR.

The Rode Pro seemed to have a more consistent quality across the various tests. That would be my choice 👍

The Rode Go was at times blasting too much so might benefit from lowering the sensitivity on the camera. The Rode Pro was easily the winner. The Saramonic, however, was at times painful to listen to, especially the fan test.

Rode 1st one, then Saramonic.. Ii have just purchased saramonic.. It's too good.. No tention to clipping mics in collar, hands free plus no other sounds captures, only whatever sound we need that's only..

Rode MicGo was clipping (I wonder if you can switch input gain lower), Rode MicPro was good, Saramonic did not pick up signal as well. Can you test the noise pickup from these microphones? It can be vsualiced in Audacity for example, which one picks up more noise.

Great review Evan ! Have checked your video multiple times before i upgraded my mic. Your inputs were so helpful. I however settled for a vmic no pro. (Things my part of the world are more expensive!). Quite happy with the pick, although i took the risk.

Nice video, Evan. I actually just recently purchase a RODE Videomic Pro microphone to up my vlogging and video production game for my KZbin channels (though I haven't used it yet), so my opinion may be biased in the sense that I wanted to like this one, but I felt like this microphone in your video had a much richer, clearer sound than the other two microphones, especially for the vlogging clips.

Thanks Evan. A good, comprehensive comparison. I like the Rode Videomic Pro for its balanced sound quality and small profile. The Rode Videomic Go seems to boost the high end a significant amount. That said - I agree with you about the convenience of the Rode Go. I've also forgotten to turn on The Rode Pro the odd time - plus the 9 volt battery is a pain in the ass to change. So.... if I were buying a new shotgun, I'd go for the Rode Go and EQ in post. The Saramonic just doesn't cut it. Sounds muddy or muffled plus the size is prohibitive as you mentioned (when using a wide angle lens). That one's gonna be a hard sell.

Thanks a lot for this useful info.. Yesterday I got purchased my new Saramonic shot gun mic and Panasonic Lumix 4k camera for my shooting.. Today I have checked the same.. Now I am not worried about surrounding noises.. Saramonic mic will not capture other voices than focused one.. Your testing is good.. But Rode 1st one is more better and Saramonic is also very good one for you tubers..

Man, very underrated channel for the quality of reviews. As for the mics: regarding your test Saramonic is a total crap. It's impossible to record anithung with it in windy environment, the dialog filter feature does nothing, the sound itself just... just sounds crappy. The Rode Videomic Pro is better than Go in terms of filtering ambient sound, but it sounds slightly muffled, so I would prefer Rode Videomic Go.

Diman saramonic is very good inside rooms.. Sounds are not like showed in this video.. I got purchased and it's superb, no other noices captures even if you are in open showrooms or places your voice will be very clear and other sounds like minus.. It's good.. In this video it's not giving the actual sound,
