Rode VideoMics are some of the most popular video microphones used with DSLR and Mirrorless cameras. This comparison of the full lineup of Rode shotgun video microphones will help you select the right Rode directional microphone for your application and budget.
I will compare the Rode VideoMicro, VideoMic GO, VideoMic, VideoMic Pro and VideoMic Pro Plus to the internal microphone on the Canon 5DMKIII.
I will then compare each Rode shotgun microphone sound test to the rest of the lineup in a single sound test.

What's up everyone?! I hope this comparison of the complete Rode Shotgun video microphones is helpful. Which would you get? Did you like it? Was there too much detail? Not enough? What did you like, and also, what did you not like? What would you like to see more of? Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏 I think that every one of these is a better option than using the internal microphone on your camera. Did the sound tests help? Let me know what you think!!

Listening with a decent set of headphones I heard lots of hissing from the VideoMicro, a low buzz and hiss from the VideoMic GO, and slight hissing on the VideoMic. The VideoMic PRO was the first where it sounded quite clear. Thank you for this video!!

Honestly, you did such a controlled/scientific comparison on the mic options. I wish everyone was as detailed orientated in their review video, enough but not too much info. Video was a bit dry overall but the content was worth it. If I had any advice I'd work on your overall tone, bringing a bit more energy to the mix. I know you're coming at people with the same way you'd have a conversation but you're doing yourself a disservice considering the quality of content you're sharing. Bring it up a couple notches and you'll reach a lot more people. This is me being a friend because I can tell you put a lot of thought and effort into this video. Brant

Hi bro, want to ask you about rode mic, after watch your rode mic video, im still dillema between videomic or videomic go,, can you recommend me ? Currently im using sl3 with build in camera mic and shoot street food (basically outdoor ) to upload on youtube Is it worth if i invest one of these 2, if im planning to use it again for future upgrade camera (probably will upgrade my camera to mirrorless in future) Are the videomic "mic" way too long forward for smaller mirrorless camera?? Can it disturb on frame? Sorry for this long question, thanks sagi :)
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 жыл бұрын
This is a very good question. I did not have any issues with either on of the mics showing up in the video. It would also have to do with the lens. (I would recommend going to a store if you're worried about your particular combo - but I have not heard anyone talking about it). My personal belief is that the Pro and Pro+ are much better (because of the +20 db), so what I would do now, is get the GO (less expensive and smaller) - or even the VideoMicro - and use it until you are ready to upgrade your setup. At that point, you will know if you also want to upgrade the microphone or if you are happy enough. I have a friend who uses the GO with a $2,000 camera and he's happy with it. I think the videomic is just bigger than you're going to want.
@IceTeaJay

Okay, thanks for the advice sagi,, anyway between micro (which is still cardioid ) and videomic (that already super cardioid) are these polar pattern effect much in outdoor situation??, if it significantly effect much, maybe ill better go for videomic go?

I agree but only because there was something wrong with it - it sounded like an earthing problem with a low buzz - might have been a bad cable or not quite plugged in (I'm guessing the former). I haven't read all of the other comments but couldn't help noticing the hum with the "Go" version. I suspect the unit may have been duff and it would be interesting if you have since tried another? After watching your Rode Video mics vs Canon in camera mic, I have changed my mind about your videos. I find them very toxic. Toxic to my wallet and my credit cards! I don't need a Rode Mic or any other mic but must confess, after watching this review, I feel compelled to go out and buy at least, one. Early in your comparisons, it was quite obvious to see how lacking the Canon's in camera mic is. Sounded like you were in the shower. Listening to your Rode mic demos on all models brought me to the quick conclusion that any external mic is better than the camera's and all models sounded much more natural. Now, would you please have a little empathy on me and wait awhile before you post the next compelling, well thought out and executed video. Whatever you do, please don't review anything like the Canon 1Dx Mark II, or worse, any of the high end dedicated C line of Canon's video cameras. But if you do, please don't let me know because, based on your other video presentations, I would then have to sell the farm to buy whatever you were reviewing, whether I needed it or not. Let me tell you sir, all electronic mfgs. should immediately beg for your address, send you their products, then sit back and just wait for the orders to roll in. Great job.

Do yourself a favor. Skip to the end. Where (in comparison) I say “Short answer:” I am a professional cinematographer. Began my career as a videographer for CBS. Interviewing celebrities such as Jamie Fox, Ice Cube, Frankie Muniz and more. Have credits on IMDB as well as a letter of recommendation from a former producer of Late Night with David Letterman declaring me as the best camera operator she’s ever hired. My older brother is a professional audio engineer with over two decades of experience and three Emmy awards. We have been following our passions since early childhood. My father brought home a black and white video camera that plugged into a heavy portable VHS recorder. From that moment forward every weekend, summer break, Christmas vacations, MLK Day, any and every opportunity. We were casting the neighbor hood kids to make sci fi thrillers, comedies, murder mysteries, music videos, and our favorite, ninjitsu super hero adventure mini-series. Actually, everything except for musicals. I would even spend countless hours creating frame-by-frame animations. In film school, where I won a cinematography award for my debut short film entry. One of the most important piece of information they drill into you from the very beginning is. “Audio is half the picture.” Did you know? Since the advent of audio with motion pictures. An audience would sit through an entire picture show, even if the film was heavily dense from scratches, out of focus, or even so poorly developed that there was no discernment between any of the blurry objects being projected on screen. The audience would still remain in their seats. Now whether or not they asked for their refunds, is up to anyone’s guess. But! The moment studios had the ability to synchronize audio to their productions. They learned a swift, valuable, and expensive lesson. If the audio for the picture was flawed in anyway. At all. There was no hesitation, the mass majority of the audience would up and leave. Refusing to watch. When I buy equipment. An eighth of my budget is spent on my camera and lenses. A quarter on, is there ever enough? Lighting. (*and remember, this is coming from a professional cinematographer. Painting with lights is how I put food on the table). Even then, as much as I wish there was a way to spend less. You cannot ever over invest in capturing audio as best as you possibly can. The piece of solace I get after every purchase is the assurance that whichever mic I buy, is going to last eons longer than any camera is. Perfect audio now, is still perfect when DSLRs get to a point of pretend 16K. Lights last as long as you treat them. Until they make portable suns with barn doors. I’ll always say at least one more would be perfect. If you buy the right mic. The kind that you never noticed one was ever used in production. (As in, a motion picture editor has the least rewarding job. If they’re any good. You’ll never notice their talent). Short answer: If you buy the right mic off the bat. It’ll be your last. I personally would prefer my camera manufacturers to invest their entire budget in developing a magnificent device that captures remarkable images. In the same sense I don’t want my microphone engineers to also include a camera they were able to assemble from money left over. Ya dig? But hey. It’s your audience.

New it retails for $188 here in Australia. I wanted to watch some reviews first before making a decision, and so glad I did. The videomic pro is only about 40 bucks more expensive here than the videomic and the quality is nigh and day, just the noise reduction makes such a huge difference. Another great video that hits the spots! Thank you! I think that Pro is the worst choice here. The price is only 50$ lower than Pro Plus, but Pro Plus captures way more deep middles which is the main point for voice recording. So, Micro and Pro Plus are the best at their price points, and there is a competition between Mic and Go.
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I agree that I would get the Pro Plus over the Pro every day. I think the GO had the highest noise floor, so I would get the videomic (although it's a lot bigger) over it. The Micro is surprisingly good for such a small form factor (and investment). Are you using a mic now?

Hi again. Thank you for watching! A few questions, in this conversation, do you plan on recording both of you with 1 mic? How important is it that the mic/s are not visible?
@boomerantics9586

@@TechGearTalk I'm not tech savvy so it hadn't occurred that I could use more than one microphone though I think that one would be ample... maybe? It's of no importance whatsoever whether the mic(s) are visible as this is merely for familial posterity and not for any kind of production. Many thanks for your response and thoughts.

I'm curious if the noise is as noticeable with live dialogue? If you recorded your dialogue and what we are hearing is that playing out of a speaker, then some of that noise and hum could be coming from your original recording mic and your speaker right? So would all of these examples have less noise in a real situation?

Great question. Recording had noise cancellation applied to it. So should have essentially none. Thanks for being part of the channel 🙏🏻

Great review. Unbelievable production quality! The picture quality is like eyecandy. I would like to see what camera do you use but even more the lighting is the interesting part because that is in my opinion the most important factor, after you have a decent camera. Why is there this low hum with a couple of the mics? Is it just quality issue, because the most expensive ones have less of that?

Damn man, that was a GREAT comparison video! Very educational and extremely well thought out, in great detail! I have a Tascam digital recorder that I use on my GoPro because I think the MediaMod directional mic isn't quite "full" enough for me and I was thinking of the Go2, but the slightly bigger videomic has the fullness I'm looking for. Gotta carry both on me though in case I'm looking for a landscape scene or a detailed one haha. Keep it up, great job!

What you say about stereo mics is true - for Røde mics, that is. But some other stereo microphones - like the Sennheiser MKE 440 - are directional stereo microphones NOT designed for ambience, but designed to give a stereo image only of what the camera lens sees. This can help the human brain to separate the noise from the signal of interest, which is a neat trick of the human brain - which simply isn't possible with a mono recording.

well, it's a matter of nuance. On the one hand, if a stand works, it works. Mostly what you get is durability with higher end stands. But if you never move your stand, or break it down, you can get by with less money for sure!

So I love this stuff and could watch all day. Just one quibble with this video. If I understand correctly, all of the tests were done at about 18 inches away even though you say there will be more coming with the source farther away. At 18 inches, a real video would be like a selfie closeup. So if that is the use case, Rode is typically going to give you good results in a relatively quiet room. In my case, I shoot almost all talking head videos where at least 3/4ths of a human is in frame. So we are talking maybe 5 feet or so. Similar tests would yield different results. Still, I prefer using the VMP+ over a Rode wireless kits because you don't have to worry about the transmitter. When I use the VMP+, noise reduction software in post usually does a good job. So not trying to be negative as much as saying adding tests with farther source distances would be useful. Your tests prove that for selfie videos or ones where the subject is close in, the difference in quality isn't huge. Those pads and filters make huge differences if the subject needs to step back a bit. My 2 cents. Thanks again for taking the time.
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the input Brian. The "short" is that I shot it at 30 and 48 as well, but when I showed the video to a few friends they said it was too long. And since the room is somewhat treated, they were very proportional in quality to the 18" results. I don't have the same experience as you with regards to the distance though. Personally, I would always use an off-camera shotgun mic if I'm 5 feed away from the subject (unless I'm using a lav or a handheld) so I think this example goes beyond a selfie. I think a good idea would have been to do the test in a noisier environment at various distances to demonstrate what each mic could do in terms of isolating the voice. As far as the pads vs distance. Wouldn't it be the same at any distance. You're lowering your camera's gain and raising it on the mic. You still need to get acceptable levels so if it's not loud enough you have to raise the internal mic levels a bit regardless of using the +20db. I always appreciate critical comments; it's the only way for me to grow and learn 🙏
