Best Shotgun Mic for YouTube and Streaming Sennheiser MKH 50 and Rode NTG3

Sennheiser MKH 50 best for streaming and KZbin? Is the Rode NTG3 a better lower cost option? Here is my nonscientific first look....

The Rode NTG3 will (generally speaking) have better rejection because the slits in the sides of the tube create wave interference that cancels out noise from the sides. The reason you’d want to use a supercardioid/hypercardioid indoors isn’t because they have better rejection (because shotgun mics often use capsules with the same polar pattern), but because reflections of the sound source, when interacting with the shotgun’s interference tube, will create coloration and artifacts, altering the sound of the microphone. So you’re probably going to get more room tone with the MKH 50, but less distortion/coloration and self noise. I’m not going to tell you to return the MKH 50, because it’s an excellent mic, but in all honesty you’d probably get better sound in this particular situation by spend the $500 price difference on acoustically treating the room to eliminate reflections. There’s nothing wrong with using a shotgun mic in a well-treated space.

Listening on Momentum TW3's, you could tell the difference, fuller bottom end but really couldn't say it was a dramatic improvement, different yes, improvement, not so.

Put the high pass filter on and a 4k boost on your interface if you have one for a brighter sound.

I dunno.., I hate to suggest you spent $1200 for nothing, but.., that thing sounds like one of those noise cancelling cell phone "I have you on speaker" calls. Really off putting. But why? Mini-story: My Dad was an engineer at Nortel back in 'the day'. He said that waaay back in the 70's, they had the tech to put super clean audio over phone lines. It was really no problem. They engineered the hell out of things, made great switches and infrastructure. But there was this problem. Talking over the perfect phones weirded people out. Customers didn't like it. Part of the problem was that they couldn't tell if a line was live or not. So they went back to the drawing board, (which they had back then, actual boards to draw on), and *artificially* created hiss and re-introduced that back into the signal. They spent time making land lines sound comfy. And they were! Man, I'm old enough now myself to remember, and to this day, nothing compares to the listening comfort of an old Bell landline. Cell phones suck. But my Dad and his engineers... They basically re-invented "room tone", (which the film and movie guys have known about forever. They could have just asked a Hollywood sound tech).

Without headphones, its hard to tell, but with headphones on, you can definitely tell there is a better bass response and low noise floor. I can see this would help quite a bit in post not having to clean up excess noise.

It sounds pretty good but it might just me lol Curious to know how it is going straight into the camera with out the preamp or any other editing to out. Like for someone who got it out of the box and only has the camera and a computer, how does it sound like. Informative video as always and look forward to the follow up!

Well, the only editing that happened was bringing the levels up, and since this mic requires phantom power some kind of preamp will need to be used either way. If I run it on my hot shoe it's still running a preamp with switchable 48v phantom. That being said my dbx is running a compressor.

@@GearZombie I just run mine right through the FX3 XLR, sounds pretty good. Before the FX3, I will record this separately to my sound devices 833 or mix pre 3 II and then sync them in post. The external recorder ones have a little better sound though but the whole process is more tedious.

To be honest, I think you have wasted $1000 as the one you had sounded great and you could even edit out that furnace rumble in post... For noise rejection best just get a dynamic mic and speak close to it...

More focused modern sound B on the 50, relaxed softened roomy sound on the ntg3.

In a well-acoustically treated room, most mics will sound good.

I thought the 50 sounded a little cleaner, but $500 better!?? I'm not sure... Now they've raised the price on the 50 to $1350... That's quite a jump from $1200... 😥
