Thanks for this video. I'm a voice over talent and I love my NTG3 but I usually need to back off of it and have a higher than normal HPF. Also add +2dB at 10 kHz to match the specs of the MKH 416.
@PavelSupanenka3 жыл бұрын
Good to know that not only me noticed this concern. It is highly dependent on the persons voice timbre.
@LanceBlairVoiceOver3 жыл бұрын
@@PavelSupanenka Yes. My voice has a big peak at 120 Hz. I used to be a field audio engineer and would have loved to use this mic on set. I often used the MKH 50 for voice overs on set. I should really always run the NTG3 through my GAP PRE 73 with the 120 Hz HPF and air setting.
@PavelSupanenka3 жыл бұрын
To be honest, when shooting outside, NTG3 picks up the sound so much better than indoors. It is much more balanced and self sufficient then.

I have a deep warm voice, and I want to capture as much of it as possible. Currently, I use a condenser mic a fist length away from my mouth, around below my chin pointing 45 degrees towards my mouth. After EQ, this does a wonderful job of capturing the depth and warmth that I wanted. But the problem is, the mike is in the frame. I was debating between getting the NTG 3 vs MKH 416. I thought I wanted to get the NTG 3 because it captures more of that low end. Is my thought process wrong? What are your thoughts Pavel?
@PavelSupanenka3 жыл бұрын
Difficult to say, as some people have really deep voice and it is bright, but not dull. Then it is totally fine to leave those low freq. sounds in the video. In my case it is just not working due to my timbre. I believe experimenting with the sound may give you 100% reliable answer. Another thing - it is always a combination of 2. If you have a heavy mixture of your voice with other sounds (music, background noise, etc.), then not using EQ may harm perception of the audio. However if you have a deep bright voice and you do not mix it with other sounds/noises, then you are totally safe, I would say...

Hi, Thanks for the video. It is very informative and to the point. I am replicating this process at Adobe Audition. All the menus are the same with Premiere except for the "bass filter". I cannot find this filter at Audition. Can you guide me pls? thanks a lot.
@PavelSupanenka3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Cem! Yes, I cannot see this filter in Audition either which is super weird since Audition is supposed to have more features. The only option I see here is to manually remove some bass frequencies using gentle low cut option in Graphic EQ (30) and moving bass sliders even lower.

If you buy the NTG-5 you woný need all those steps....right?
@PavelSupanenka2 жыл бұрын
NTG5 is just a bit newer mic that pics a bit more bass, has a little bit less noise. The rest is more or less the same. So answering your question - no. You’ll still need to process your sound to have it sound better. And again it much depends on your voice. Some voices are perfect without reducing the lows.

Sounds like it's too bright after the fixes and the sibilance is kinda hurtin' at times. Still. It's sound advice. Just play with it til it sounds right.
@PavelSupanenka2 жыл бұрын
May be. It's the matter of "like"/"don't like", I think... When I listen to radio, especially ADs, sibilance is just unbelievable. But that's made on purpose.
@Unethical.FandubsGames2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I get it. It's not a problem if I'm listening through more bass heavy headphones meant for music and the likes but when I'm listening with reference headphones. It's more noticeable. In this case though. I think it really only needs a couple of Db off and it'd be more to my taste :D I've seen too many people saying "I like to have warmth in my voice" and all I can really hear is just one big peak in the 300hz range :D Pretty much the Radio/Podcast voice eh? Still. I mostly came to check out what can be done with this particular mic as I'm looking at options for the future. I'm collecting mics a little too fast for my own taste and I am trying to be more careful. Keep it up. I did actually watch the full thing and enjoyed it.
@PavelSupanenka2 жыл бұрын
@@Unethical.FandubsGames Thanks, dude! Yeah, apart from that every microphone sounds different with different people's voice - so in theory to avoid troubles people need to also try it first and listen how it sounds with their own voice which is not so easy to do before purchase.
@Unethical.FandubsGames2 жыл бұрын
@@PavelSupanenka Precisely. I gotta hear how something sounds with voices in and around my vocal range because I need to know how they'll react when I change things up in performance. So far this mic is looking alright. Might work for me. As an option when I'm less strapped :D
