IMPORTANT: Im not sure if this is just a visual bug at zero skill points invested, but when you have zero points in a skill line/tree it says you need 3 skill points to unlock tier 2, 7 to unlock tier 3, and 11 to unlock the 4th tier. HOWEVER once you put points in the skill line/tree it says you need a total of 4 points for tier 2, 8 total for tier 3, and 12 total to unlock tier 4.

I would add for surveying planets, that the skill Botany reduces the number of successful scans that you need to make on a said plant, on a 1 for 1 basis. For example, you normally need 8 scans of different targets of a said plant to complete it for the planet. With rank 4 botany skill, that is reduced to 4. Same thing goes for, Zoology skill and scanning the planets Fauna.

You make a valid point about Astrodynamics - unless the crewmember in question is an insufferable, bi-polar, nag with anger issues.

I've been pushing towards level 100 in preparation for a NG+ playthrough on very hard difficulty. I was level 80+ without spending a single skill point into the Science tree. What I did for the final grind was put 4 points into Medicine, then 1 into Zoology for alien XP farming at bases. After grinding a bunch more levels (which was now easy), I put 4 into Weapon mods, 3 into Armor mods, and 1 into Special Projects (which you need to research tier 4 weapon mods). Both armor and weapon mods have some powerful options that will increase things like your carry capacity, damage resistance, stealth detection, and weapon damage. For most ranged weapons there are at least 2 different mods that will substantially increase damage. This is important because most legendary weapon drops will have little if any mods already attached, so having weapon mods at level 4 is extremely useful.

The tough descision is the tier 1 skills. second tier is easy, as I will want to craft a perfect weapon, especially if it was a good legendary, but with unoptimal mods. Let me tell you how you can cheat a sniper rifle build: sink points into weapon crafting and as a barrel choose "stabilizing" barrel for a rifle like hard target. Now look through your scope and notice how you have no weapon sway at all and how first two ranks of sniper certification are now completely useless. Also you only need first rank of special projects to unlock the very best weapon/armor modifications. I basically think that combat skills become lackluster, because you can mod your guns to OP levels.

good point. I don't think high level gameplay/content was balanced very well. maybe they didnt do extensive QA testing? You would think there would be a significant payoff for deeper ranks and tiers of skills, but as you noted, its simply not the case in numerous scenarios. Perfect is actually unarmed gameplay and its related skills. Either make it viable or make it all tier 1/2 and super fast to rank up. as it stands its a total grind, spread across numerous tiers, and never becomes viable.

@@LeeroyGaming True, it seems that Unarmed combat scales as well in Starfield as Destruction does in Skyrim.

Glad you would make this video, but it seems you don't play much of the gameplay that use science skills. You don't even accurately describe how some of them work... You mostly just read the in game descriptions which poorly explains the skill. Astrodynamics, for example, does not apply the jump range bonus from your crew having said skill. The whole point of people searching videos like this is to go beyond the shitty in game descriptions. Like why didn't you use console commands to test out at least some of these skills before making this video?

Medicine is huge for dialog options. I've found geology is as well. Even botany sometimes.

ive run into medicine as well. not as much for botany or geology personally. However it does seem like you only need rank 1 in a skill to unlock the chat options.

@LeeroyGaming with barret I've had geology pop up and Sam like on 4 or 5 different occasions. 🤔 botany on the rare off occasion, u meet a nerdy scientist on a side quest I've seen that at lest 3 times already.

4:20. I already disagree. Geology skill is useless! Don’t mix it with another one in a second row, unlocking new resources. Geology only increases amount of resources mined. I wanted to get an answer which exactly new projects could be researched with forth row perk, ship or weapon? I didn’t get an answer. Only very general info.

Not sure about ships, but Special Projects 1 unlocks research for tier 4 weapon mods, which is where some of the best final damage upgrades are locked behind. This is 100% mandatory if you want to maximize your weapon damage. Armor mods are completely different, as there are no tier 4 mods whatsoever. Armor still has useful mods at the lower tiers that are definitely worth investing into. For the overall Science tree, the optimal path for me was Medicine 4, Zoology 1 (for XP grinding), Armor Mods 3, Weapon Mods 4, Special Projects 1.

Shocking that you're doing a video on this topic and don't even know that it takes four skill ranks in the science tree to unlock the second tier and eight to unlock the third tier. It amazes me that people do videos before they do research

This video came out 9 months ago. At that time, there was literally a visual bug where it said you needed 3 points to reach the advanced tier instead of 4. He actually discusses that in his physical skills video.

Zoology is highly limited. Only a few animals can be tamed, not all. Finding a tamable animal on a good planet is a tough one.
