IMPORTANT: Im not sure if this is just a visual bug at zero skill points invested, but when you have zero points in a skill line/tree it says you need 3 skill points to unlock tier 2, 7 to unlock tier 3, and 11 to unlock the 4th tier. HOWEVER once you put points in the skill line/tree it says you need a total of 4 points for tier 2, 8 total for tier 3, and 12 total to unlock tier 4.

I can confirm Shields 4 is indeed absolutly worth it. I did some extensive testing. I tested it by going straight into a group of enemy ships and making a screenshot on how far I came before the shields went to 0. Then I reloaded the save and did the exact same thing, expect this time I added Shields 4 with console command. I got considerably further into the enemy ships. I repeated this a couple times to make sure.

Dude crew skills are not the same as your skill, AND THEY STACK.

I actually think particle beam is worth getting. I'd recommend swapping to particle beams on all ships and putting three of them on each. It'll cost roughly the same or less power than multiple weapons and you don't have to switch all the time in combat as they're good against everything. Add an EMP too if you want to board ships so once you've taken out the shields of the last ship you can target the engines with the EMP.

Shields 4 is very much worth it, I went from getting my ass kicked by the Va'ruun Shroudbearer and his fleet to killing them all. I also cleared the Crimson Fleet system fleet without much of a fuss at lvl18.

If you put x4 points into weapons and your companion has x4 points in the same weapon skill does that mean it stacks to a x8 Or if you have x2 and companion has x2 does that mean you have the perks of level 4 in that skill?

Crew skills aren't one to one copies of player skills. Vasco's rank 2 shield skill is only +20% shield. Omari's rank 3 is still only +20% but also 1 bonus power in shields. Having rank 3/4 shield systems and either of the above crew members is a total +80% shields.

thought the companion skills are not active unless you got one point in that skill

First I have heard of that. The increase to ship inventory from the robot companion seems to be working and I have no points invested in the same skill. would defeat the purpose.
