@ Yes, XC stands for eXtended Capacity and HC for High Capacity. What does matter is the writing speed, it must be higher than 50 MB/s (just because this can only record 1080p, for cameras that shoot in 4k even higher writing speeds are needed)

I'm dusting off my A7ii in the backpack and trying to see how the video compares to my cellphone that does 4k60p. Resolution wise the phone is 4x as detailed. However, the quality of the pictures cannot be compared. I think I'll just use my a7ii in 1080p and upscale to 4k for KZbin uploads. It handles details better than even the newer cell phones.

For a long time, I been shooting in AVCHD, but I always noticed when I shoot in 60i FX with 1/125 shutter speed, my editor would complain telling me that I wasn’t shooting in 60fps for the slow motion shots. I also would check properties and it would indicate to me that I shot in 30fps instead.

"This operation or setting not available as follows Shoot Mode [not highlighted] Intelligent Auto [highlighted]" Ok, so what am I doing wrong? I have a PAL version, if that helps, where I have 25 frames (and not 24 frames) on video mode.

its 2020. about a year and a half since this video launched. awesome review btw. im looking to switch from canon to sony. what would you recommend im doing more video than anything. i want the low light capabilities sony has been ruling in. im not trying to buy the highest end camera nor the newest. im setting my price tag at 1000. older cameras are obviously fine. i am looking currently at this camera as i can find it used for about 700. any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! subbed!

Thanks Daniel! You should definitely check out the a7s or a7sii. Both great cameras and more-so video shooting cameras than the a7i. ii & iii series.

Daniel Long After a while with my A7ii, I would recommend you getting a A7iii for superior autofocus (which is really slow on the ii) and the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8. You can check out the results of the lens on my main channel @f1vefour on the latest 2 videos

Hey, first of all, I loved your video, extremely detailed and helped me a lot. I recently acquired this camera and I do have one specific quetion lingering my mind. You said that you changed your C2 button to MF/AF toggle, does this apply to video on lenses without the AF/MF buttons? For example, I'm using a 50mm 1.8 sony lens with no AF/MF buttons. Would this make it so I can auto focus in video?

Thank you! Your support means a ton! I guess I'm not exactly sure on what you're asking. But for example, if I was shooting video, and while it was recording I pressed the C2 button, it would switch from auto focus to manual focus. Or vice versa depending on what you were shooting in to begin with. Since the 50mm does have auto focus capabilities, it should absolutely make it to where you can autofocus in video. The camera already has that capability, I just find it easier to have that toggle switch in a place where I have easy access to it. I hope this helps. I did some research on why my specific A7ii couldn't AF and finally figured out, that the store hadn't updated the firmware yet. (Update V2.0 doesn't support AF in video, from V3.0 + it supports AF in video). After doing that it's been working perfectly fine! Thanks again and keep it up! Loving your videos.

The only complaint with the A7ii is, well, you know, the ridiculously short BATTERY LIFE. That is the only reason I would replace this otherwise gem of a camera. i have 4 A7ii batteries and i need a couple more to do a half day video shoot.

I have this camera and think it is great for photos. I'm stuggling to get the results I want from video though but new to filming video and I may need to look into dfferent lens options as it's mainly the autofocus in video which is bothering me. It might be worth checking the PP7 porofile as you can set it to s-log 2 which is meant to be better for post production colour grading.

I totally agree! Ive noticed some great video quality form the Sony 16-35 f2.8 lens, but it is a bit expensive. I have heard that the Zeiss version of this lens has similar video resolution and its a bit cheaper, I might look into that. Hope this helps!

awesome video, I got this mostly for photography as well, but would also like to do some basic video, of course I wanna do the best it can do, I have final cut pro x would love to get more out of it, I did all the same settings, however it won't let me change to RAW from Fine as it is now, even when compressed or uncompressed when in video mode.

Thank you! Try changing the aspect ratio to 16:9. I'm not sure why you're not able to change it though. Also I do generally film in M Mode. It just allows for me to change more of the settings with ease.

Great video bro, keep it up. On your picture profile setting, have you used the Cinestyle profile? I use a Canon 80D, and like to color grade a flat profile in post. Have you thought of using a more Log like profile?

Well uncompressed files are usually much larger than compressed files. This means that they will take up more space on your memory cards, and from what I've noticed, hardly make a difference in quality. So It's really up to the user. If I'm shooting a big video where I know there will be a lot of color grading and such, I usually shoot uncompressed, but if it is just a vlog or more of a fun project where Im not super worried about those things then I shoot compressed video. But it really is up to you!

The Sony a7ii doesn't actually shoot in 120fps, so your best bet is shooting in 60fps and slowing it down from there.

I have the sony 24-240 f/3.5-6, and the 16-35 f2.8. I love both of these lenses, but they are quite expensive. I also like the sony 50mm f1.8 prime lens . Its great fro portraits and such.

I just went to change to XAVCs and my camera said my memory card didn't support it, very odd! I have that SD card in 32gb. I don't think I need it though tbh for my casual video use(?) but the profile settings are very nice to know. For me, A7ii the video is not that great, compare to a7s, the noise and detail are not very clear and crispy. Kind a dispointed at first, but to think about it.. its a photo camera , that is good about it.

Lexie Light Feather Photoshop isn’t really a video editing software. I would try using Adobe Premier or Final Cut for video. Those are what I use and what I’ve found allow for more creativity. I wish you the best!

So what I notice is that when I shoot in S-log 2, the camera automatically puts the ISO at 1600. which often results in crushed blacks or bix pixels/grain when lifting up the shadows/exposure. Should it be on 1600? or is there a trick to avoid this grain in video?

If your camera doesn't have it, I wouldn't worry about it too much. The a9 is a pretty solid camera, so you should be able to still get some great image resolution and videos with the camera, without PP.

So most likely what it is, is the memory card you are using. I wouldn’t worry about it too much though as 25p is almost indistinguishable from 24p.
