A question people always ask me is "Where should I start if I'm interested in mixology" or "What's a good drink for someone who's not in love with "spirit forwards" drinks?" and I think the best answer is actually a sour drink, really any of them. Yes- from a historic perspective an Old Fashioned is slightly more foundational, but honestly that's something you do kind of need to learn to love- a whiskey sour isn't like that. Additionally, sours have been around nearly as long as the most historic and roots basic of cocktails and they really show off the transformative power of drink mixing. With all of these you'll put ingredients together and get something our of your shaker that is more than the sum of its parts, the perfect little piece of mixology magic to get you to fall in love with mixing drinks. And most importantly, really none of these are terrifically complicated, you can easily master one of these drinks without having ever touched a shaker before. I put this list together specifically to try and include every base spirit, so depending on your taste there's should be something here for everyone.

Learning the 2/1/1 template really changed my Cocktail experience. Cocktails went from mystical recipes that can not be changed. They had names that you had to write down and remember. Now it's pretty much, throw in 2 strong, 1 sour, 1 sweet and see how it tastes

I actually just made a New York Sour for the first time a few days ago according to your old video specs, and had trouble keeping a red wine float with egg whites. @howtodrink

the problem with that episode is mainly the edit and my delivery- It's a New York sour... but really a Fancy Sour served 1890's style, the point there was to throw the kitchen sink at it, and I THOUGHT i explained that but like, I guess I didn't

@@howtodrink Yeah, it wasn't bad or anything. It just was a bit advanced for me as a beginner cocktail-maker to try to float red wine between the drink and the foam like was recommended online. So just want to say that I love your videos and the fact that you experiment with various ingredients that many people might not typically think to add to a drink or might not have on hand. I actually took inspiration from this and came up with what I like to call a whiskey sour apple, which actually uses citric acid instead of using any sort of citrus juice for the sour aspect. I use Jim Beam Apple, apple juice, citric acid and simple syrup. Everything combined gives it a very nice granny Smith tartness without the overly sweetness one would expect from something that has a higher sugar content like this drink. An egg white can be used to add a different mouth feel, but it's not required. Recipe is as follows: 1.5 oz Jim Beam Apple Bourbon 1 oz Apple Juice 0.5 oz Simple Syrup 0.25 tsp Citric Acid Combine in a shaker with ice, shake well, and strain over ice into a rocks glass

Great episode, summing up some excellent drinks. Sours are my favorite summer drinks so with the Jack Rose, Sidecar and Last Word I have some great drinks to make at home to look forward to. However, I think you missed the (arguably) best sour of them all: Pisco Sour. I learned to love Pisco on a visit to Chile 25 years ago and I'll drink it in any form it can be served, but I don't think I know of a spirit that gels so well with lime or lemon juice as Pisco, and there's some fierce competition here with Tequila, Mezcal, and Rum. The egg white is a must, obviously, in a Pisco Sour and so are the drops of bitters on top. For those who have a few minutes to spare, I'll share my first encounter with Pisco Sour, which obviously was from Chile. I was planning to take an early morning bus from capital Santiago to Arica in the very north of Chile, a 34 hour long bus trip. The night before I was partying with my friends until the early hours so I only got a few hours of sleep and woke up late. I had to run through the city to the bus terminal with my rucksack, severely hungover, and with the sweat pouring down. Caught the bus with minutes to spare and got in, sat down, and immediately fell asleep. I must have made quite an entrance, last man aboard, running, sweaty, the only gringo on the bus, and slumps into the seat, says hello to the neighbouring passengers and falls asleep within a minute. And did I sleep? It was afternoon, around 3pm when I finally woke up. I kid you not, the bus steward and all the passengers cheered when I woke up, the bus driver even made a special announcement! So I was Mr. Popular on the bus. After dinner, the steward was serving everybody on board Pisco Sours and he made sure I was entertained after hearing I've never tried it. It was the longest bus ride of my life but also one of the best. The friendliness and joy of all the co-travellers and the bus staff made it a wonderful experience, and the Pisco Sour was part of topping it. I've loved it ever since.

I've been watching your KZbin channel for months now and I turn 21 in just 13 days and I have a book written down for how to mix properly and make something special. First drink I made from you was the dole whip from Disneyland and me and my family loved it

So my dad’s favorite spirit has always been tequila, and even though we hail from the city where the frozen margarita was created, we both prefer the classic cocktail. I was just telling my dad that a reposado is my go to for tequila than a joven or blanco, and glad that you share that opinion.

I know this was posted 3 hours ago but I just got home from work, and as I was getting out of the car I thought to myself "I need a sour of some kind." I get in the house and -boom- there's this video just encouraging me, telling me I made the right choice.

I loved this video so much. I am such a fan of the sour. I’m also such a fan of your show. You’ve gotten me into spirit making shenanigans. Thank you. I now have my own set of barfly supplies thanks to your recommendations. I appreciate this video for its informativeness and don’t take this personally, maybe I’m misreading, but you seemed to care about this episode. The last few you’ve seemed distant and not really into it. I know you’ve been doing a lot over on Twitch which I’ve been binging when I can. Loving it. Hope to subscribe when the money buffs out. You know, we’ve got that whole ‘rona thing happening. Thanks again for the content during this time and making drinking not only educational but fun... if it wasn’t before😝

That Scotty appearance really made this one of the best videos on the channel... I found surprising the egg white advice on NY to make the wine float better... I tried both with and without and i works better with for me... maybe i just need more practice but you'll end up with 3 layers and that also adds to the visual component

Did the regular Jack Rose this weekend before I saw this Ep. But came up with an improved variant - Add 1 Barspoon of an Allspice Dram. Then finish with grating some fresh cinnamon on top. Will be AWESOME in the fall winter. Came up with this change while making myself a Lion's Tail.
