Күн бұрын

People ask me all the time about my "favorite" drink or the best drink I've ever had, I started answering that in my video about the best rum drinks, now let's do whiskey.
Big thanks to Barfly Mixology Gear for sponsoring this episode. You can find their products at the amazon affiliate link here: www.amazon.com...
To find the whiskeys I am using in this episode visit Curiada at bit.ly/FavWhis... and use code HOWTODRINK for free shipping on orders over $199. Also if you add a bottle marked with 'free shipping' to your cart, they will cover the shipping on any size order!
Improved Whiskey Cocktail:
In a mixing glass
.25 oz. or 8 ml. Simple Syrup

1 dash of absinthe
Add ice and stir
Strain into glass

Whiskey Sour:
In Shaker

1 Egg White
Dry Shake
Add ice and shake
Strain into glass
Garnish with a few dashes of Peychaud's Bitters

Hey Greg, during the pandemic, a lot of bars in my area survived by selling non perishable cocktails that were batched in mason jars or liter bottles or whatever was convenient. You should do a video on some non perishable batched cocktails you can just keep on the fridge and pour, I’d love to see your take on some of those.

When I was still bartending, I would always try to convince my regulars to at least try their go-to cocktails with a higher end spirit. A cocktail done with a topshelf bottle is like the acoustic version of your favorite hard rock song. You get to experience all of those ton3s and notes and chords with a drawn out. haunting quality that the original can drown out or fly right past. If you love a particular cocktail, you owe it to yourself to try it with topshelf Quality spirits, 100%.

I was in Hawaii recently and was able to actually get my hands on the original spirit used in the Halekulani, okolehao (a spirit made of cane sugar and ti root), and the difference between the bourbon and okolehao versions is mindblowing. Its a shame that okolehao is so hard to come by because the drink is vastly improved by it.

love the show Greg!! One thing you said I'd argue with: i wouldn't say Maraschino tastes "absolutely nothing" like cherries. I would say that's accurate if you're specifically referring to those atomic red Maraschino cherries, but I actually think Maraschino liqueur has a really compelling, almost almond-cherry taste to it. It's the kind of funky, nutty cherry taste that I recommend everyone try because it works so brilliantly in cocktails. Anyways, just wanted to add my 2 cents here and say keep up the great work!

This episode came out at the perfect time! (A bit of backstory first) I don't drink alcohol due to religious reasons, but before the pandemic I worked at a dinner theater where I was taught to mix drinks. I started watching this channel to understand the drinks better so I could better serve guests, and I fell in love with mixing the drinks and this channel. I have tried making my own mocktail variations on drinks, and I finally managed to get hold of a non-alcoholic bourbon this week! So now I will definitely try the latter two drinks and will see if I can find a way to do something similar to the first.

The whiskey sour and the Old fashioned are two of my favorite cocktails. I did not have the tiki drink but I love manhattans. The Strong the sweet and the aromatic hit you at the same time while being able to taste all of them. Plus I love vermouth(which I hope you'll do an episode on it soon). PS David Wondrich in his chapter on old fashioneds in Imbibe mentions a fantastic variation of one which uses applejack as the base spirit, made just the same as a whiskey old fashioned, but with a teaspoon of smith and cross. I love that you call this out, Greg...using higher quality spirits in mixed drinks is usually way better. I've had high quality whiskey/bourbon/scotch and low quality whiskey/bourbon/scotch mixed with coke and I'll take the high quality every single day. One of my favorites is Glenfiddich 12/18 year scotch + coke...it's like a smokey, spicy cola that has a better balance vs. Jim Beam which just makes a sweeter, sugar-ier cola (like sweet tea...sweet cola?! gross). Who would even think that better ingredient's usually yields better results?!

Hey Greg, I have a video suggestion for you. I don't know if you're familiar with the band Alestorm, one of their songs "Pegleg Potion" describes some sort of weird cocktail and I thought you could try to make your own version of it. Some ingredients sound unusual in the song, but you made an actual drink starting from the concept of a bag of gas, so I don't think this would be a problem for you. Hope you make the Pegleg Potion one day. Cheers

I gotta agree with Jeff, the question of "what's your favorite cocktail" is highly nuanced. It depends on my mood, what I'm eating if anything, and probably other factors of which I am not even aware. My _drink_ of choice is scotch or bourbon, but neither of those is a cocktail. So when I do have a cocktail is is a break from my routine, and I'm usually looking for something a bit unlike either of those drinks. For me my number 1 go to I'm probably having a martini. I don't go for some of the wilder divergences from the norm, but there is a *huge* amount of space to be explored just by altering your vermouth and your gin. Seriously, just changing up the vermouth and keeping your gin the same you can enjoy a huge variety of different flavors in the same cocktail. I'd recommend to anyone looking to stock a serious bar that they have several different dry vermouth on hand. And you can blend your vermouth, or replace it entirely, with lillet, sherry, white wine, or even absinthe but you might want to go very light there. Second up is a Manhattan. Made with rye or a tamer bourbon than my standard Knob Creek 100 proof. Third is going to be a daiquiri. Possibly tied with a margarita. But the margarita needs to be made with good tequila, none of your rail quality Jose Cuervo. Use a solid reposado or an anejo. These drinks are just fun and full of flavor.

Something I’ve been liking is honey jack 2oz, lemonade 3oz and any syrup flavor 0.25-1 oz (lavender and strawberry are great)

For me, my number one whiskey cocktail has got to be a Perfect Manhattan, but I appreciate that this is your list, not mine. You make a strong case for these and I think I'll be giving some of them a(nother) try. I did make an Earl Grey MarTEAni with tea infused bourbon instead of gin, and it grew on me. Perhaps I'll give that another go.

My go-to drink (as in - I make it at home) used to be the Old Fashioned, but I switched to the Manhattan after starting keto (less sugar). My neighborhood pub has a whiskey sour on the menu right now that has become my go-to when I'm out. Great drink! They also have a great tiki drink that I like - which is weird because I've never been into tiki drinks.

I like a New York sour over a standard whiskey sour. All you have to do is take a nice sweet red wine and float it after you pour the sour. Adds this nice pop of berry notes. Really good with a rye as the base.

Do pre-made mixer reviews! Things like pina colada, margarita etc. Ive also seen ones for old fashioned which makes very little sense considering how little besides whiskey goes in one but this is why we need your opinion!

Would like to see you try the Schneemaß. It's a cocktail from germany. You need a beer mug (1l glas), fill corn schnapps to the first ring, (around 100 ml?) then add 2 scopes of vanilla ice cream and film the rest up with Fanta (or another orange soda). Then stir so the ice cream dissolves in the drink.

I have to say, I tried the Halekulani Cocktail and I really like the balance with the barrel proof bourbon. I used Michters (sp?) Reminds me of a simpler hurricane without the complexity dark rum brings to the show. It is nice to find a tiki drink that has bourbon.

A whiskey sour is actually the only drink that I'll use Johnny Walker Red for. I had a bottle of it sitting on my home bar for ages, and couldn't find a way to enjoy it. Turns out it's pretty nice when it's muted by egg whites, sugar, and lemon.

I had a whiskey cocktail in Manchester that I haven't been able to find anywhere else called a Boilerbreaker, as it is a whiskey beer cocktail! But it doesn't use actual beer, it's made from a beer cordial and Jameson irish whiskey IPA edition, I have also found and bought single malt glenfiddich IPA which is experimental! It's then mixed with Wild Turkey rye and lemon juice, and I'm sure egg white/aquafaba because it's foamy like a whiskey sour but it's not listed in the ingredients. It is very unique and exactly what you would expect a sprit cocktail that tastes of beer to be like. If you could try to find out more about this cocktail and even make it on a future video that would be amazing, and you should definitely try it!

Why not try something like the Nerve Tonic from Star Trek Online. "Hot , Sour, A little pick-me-up should do it. In a stemmed glass. A drop of honey." At least this is what's called for when trying to have the bartender make it in game.

I’ve seen some mention of a man O’war cocktail which I have tried, it’s basically a whiskey side car with sweet vermouth instead of simple syrup or sugar. But my 3 of late have been old fashioned (3) whiskey side car or man o’war (2) and boulevardier which I can enjoy any day of the week, though it packs such a punch! Also if you like whiskey cocktails I highly recommend Irish whiskeys that can add an additional dimension (not Jameson though!)

Hey Greg! We were hunting some new whiskey but instead found a really good espresso rum called Grind. We put it up against Mr Black and it’s really good but being a rum base…really good. Just thought I’d share.

I know it's pretty basic, but my favorite whiskey (and by whiskey I mean bourbon or rye) cocktails are Boulevardier (with Rittenhouse, Carpano, and Campari), Whiskey Sour, and Sazerac in that order. If we're counting scotch, the Penicillin takes the crown and the other three go right below it

Greg, if you like the Halekulani you should try the Iron Ranger cocktail. Recipe is in either the Modern Tiki or Simple Tiki book, I get those two mixed up. Regardless, it’s a fantastic whiskey based tiki drink. Cheers!
