I think one of the reasons the Sage does not get as much attention is there are no sprints or exclusives of it (that I’m aware of). Could you imagine one in K390 or Magnacut. That would get it some more attention for sure.

My favourite is hands down the Shaman. But purely because I like the look. It just speaks to me, in a way the humpy para-something lot does not. For a smaller companion I’d choose the Lil‘Native. A perfect middle ground would be the Native 5, but there I really miss the compression lock. Would prioritise this upgrade over any steel upgrade.

9:36 Great news! I just learned to flick open Native 5!!! This saves me $100's of dollars for not needing to buy Para3! The only reason why I've been wanting to buy para3 was because I could not flick open Native 5! There are several KZbin videos out there. You can do it, too. I lubricated my Native5 a lot and it did not take a whole lot of practice.

@JustStartingOut-nt8ve11 ай бұрын
@@ericasedc Thank you! Thumb flick was super easy. After lubricated well, the only thing that I needed to do differently was to use the thumb nail part of the thumb to flick, instead of the tip of the thumb (skin part) to flick. Spidey flick needed more practice because Native 5 is my Spiderco knife, and therefore, I was never ever able to do it before. But, after 10~15min of practice, I was able to do it. So, Native 5 turned out to be the first knife that I learned to Spidey flick. I'm sure I will get better as I try more often and my finger gets stronger. I think you should have a tutorial video of how to Spidey flick Native 5 sometime in 2024.

I have and use both Spyderco and Benchmade. Like them both and EDC C.F. Sage and Bugout. Swap the scales on the Bugout or C.F. and it’s a sweet ultralight that’s proven. Both are solid knife brands. When weight matters Bugout, style edc it’s the carbon Sage. Truck keeps a PM2 ready for real work.

I've got 2 old Benchmade's. An Infidel and a Ambassador (I think that's what it's called). It's out the side. All the finish is worn off but it still fires pretty hard. The Infidel accidentally got ran over by a pickup truck. I know, sounds like a song. Anyway, I contacted Benchmade about getting them repaired and was told it would be at least a year. I guess, I'll hold on to them and see if I can find someone to fix them.

Nice knives for small hands. my size 12 hands found the native 5 way too small, but too big for a 5th pocket. Recently got the K390 strech 2,bigger knife fits perfectly. Its downward facing belly is wicked, almost like a shillin knife, very very nice. Would I had preferred a compression lock ? Not sure, because having a full handle is very comfortable, whereas open construction tend to bite your palm imo.

Hey Erica - SUCH A FUN & INTERESTING VIDEO! Cool, I had never heard that backstory on the BM940 Osbourne design. I love the Native 5 too, and I'm ok with the back lock, but I just prefer the ease of the compression lock. [Oh yeah, I heard you say it near the end of the video: we need an Native 5 in K390 with a compression lock!!! I totally agree!] I have always thought of the PM2/PM3 as primarily EDC knives, but you make a good case that they are a bit more tactical than the Native and other Spyderco's in the leaf-shaped blade family. Also nice analysis between the Native & Sage - some things I never thought of as well there. I tend to like carrying/using a larger knife, so my 3 favorite Spyderco's are: PM2, Manix 2, and the Shaman. My favorite knife of all time is the Full-Size Benchmade Adamas, so you can see my preference. In spite of that, I think, for most people, the lighter weight, somewhat smaller blades you reviewed here are definitely more pocketable & EDC friendly. LOL - 'The swell that's right where your palm is, but not technically called a "palm swell"' . . . yeah, people need to chill out man! VERY NICE mirrored-edge sharpening job on those blades by the way! Thanks for taking the time to make another great video.

I love all of the knives in this video. The Bugout has been my daily for nearly 2 years. It fits in every pant pocket without much weight and doesn't get in the way of my overly thick wallet going in and out of my pocket. Deep-carry clip on the Bugout is short, tidy, and has good lines. It's a great knife to carry in places where most people don't. I love the Para 3, both standard and lightweight. It's the only Spyderco that I can flick out single-handed with conviction. I thought the standard Para 3 would not be as comfortable in hand as the lightweight, but it feels more secure in the hand. The Delica was my first Spyderco. It has melt-in-my-hand ergos. It's the old girlfriend who has become your most reliable friend. Real easy to say hello to after handling other knives. Just purchased a Stretch 2 XL in Damascus and fancy Japanese fabric design scales. It's a lovely thing.

I’ve now seek 6-7 of your videos and I have to say how much I really appreciate your candor and honesty with your comparisons and reviews. It’s so refreshing compared to all those others who just highlight the measurements and stats. I know you USE your blades and that gives a guy like me way more valuable insights. Based on this review, I’m probably gonna look at the Delica, believe it or not as it appears the blade is just a bit more slim and slicer. The Sage too similar to the blade design of the Native? I actually don’t mind back locks tho I don’t have any with the compression lock… Thoughts?

No arguments here, great evaluation/comparison! The Military was originally designed by Sal Glesser to be more like what you were saying about the BM 940, a do anything, jack-of-all-trades but master of none. It was for Military members to be able to have a single folding knife that could do near any task a deployed member may need in the field. Food/Field Duty/Tactical etc. The Paramilitary (later updated and replaced by the PM2) was a scaled down to more traditional edc size knife since it was found to be such a favorable design beyond just military deployments. Thus making it one of the most desired edc designs, because it was now lighter, more pocketable, a safer & stronger lock, with four clip positions instead of two (both tip down), that could still do more than the average knife. Then the Para 3, came along because the outcry for 3” (or less) knives swept the community due to restrictions in so many places. Many think it has a 3 in its name because it’s the 3rd version of the Military family (actually the PM2 was), but it’s called Para 3 because it’s the 3 inch version. The P3LW was the next progression of this size, thus making it a more versatile and reliable version of what the Bugout originally set out to be. Love your channel, Cheers :)

I have the same hat. Honestly, I'm so fed up with the 940. I got one because it's so popular, but it's just not for me. The blade shape, the thickness, the grind, it is just not what an "EDC" should be, for me personally. It's too thick to cut things and the grind is too wide. I'm certain that such a style of knife would never have gotten such a buzz without the internet... I completely re-profiled and re-sharpened my 940 to remove the secondary bevel and make it more easily sharpenable. Then i used it as a work beater (builder) and found it finally found it's niche there.

I love my delicas, probably more than the sage 5 but a lot of that is due to the large amount of aftermarket parts for the delica. I have one Ti/ni coated s30 one in titanium scales that I anodised pink with a purple ti deep carry clip and a wharnie wearing arctic storm fat carbon scales and blue Ti milled clip. Whereas my poor sage 5 ain’t got no bling 😂 definitely wanna get some of the RGT Ti sage 5 scales that are supposedly in the works. The native 5 is an amazing knife . I wished there was a comp lock version for so long but then I got a native 5 and realised - holy shit this is best backlock I’ve ever experienced - the thing just drops when you disengage the lock, I can even use my index finger to disengage it and the blade drops shut completely 😂 I thought the pivot must be loose but nope it’s rock solid. And all these people saying you can’t flick them or they’re not good at flicking are missing out IMO. As soon as I disassembled both my natives and applied lube to the pivot they became easy to flick. Obv it’s different to flicking a knife with a detent because the lock is applying closing pressure all the way to about 45 degrees but once you get it down they flick great. The tolerances on the USA made native 5 just seem to be way way better than the seki city models IME

I cant recommend the spyderco leafjumper in K390 enough! What a beast of a user. Mine flicks and drops shut like a button lock lol. Yea its kind of an ugly duckling but it has totally benched my 940-2. It didn't blow my mind right away but the more i use it the more i fall in love with it highly highly recommend.

"This *SWELL* where it sits in your palm....whatever that is called." I cackled. I don't know what the technical term for that design element is, but I'm pretty sure the formal designation of that comment is *snark*. 😂 Also, I wholly endorse "get both if you can." Round the house and town, the Para 3 or even something bigger is preferred. But for work I gotta put on the soft pants and a tie, so both slim and light are preferrable.

I don't know, after watching your vid I am no closer to deciding. I also like the spearpoint blade shape and K390. I have a Sage 3, also because I don't like the back lock. I like all three, so hmmm. My fav edc is the Urban K390. Yeah, you make a nice bevel 😊

I hope you have the opportunity to test out the Manix 2 lightweight in Rex45 it has become my daily user at work cutting cardboard and plastic nothing too demanding so the knife is more than strong enough and the blade material cuts for quite a while before honing and/or stropping is needed. Haven't needed to go beyond edge maintenance yet because the Rex 45 responds so well to stropping even considering that I have clumsily bumped the edge against metal.
@ericasedc10 ай бұрын
I won’t be doing that. That knife is too large for me. I already tested and reviewed REX45 thoroughly anyway! It’s on the channel(:
@wills.866210 ай бұрын
@ericasedc well it seems well balanced for anyone who wouldn't mind a larger knife. I actually don't see myself using anything larger. I wish that Spyderco put washers on both sides of the pivot for all of their lightweights And yes, Spyderco has earned the regard it has for the way they heat treat their blade steels. Have a good new year.

Hi. I'm just wondering if you have any opinion on Michrotech M390. I have been using it pretty much everyday for the last 3 years for food prep, but I need to sharpen it quite often. If I want to keep it really sharp, I need to sharpen it once in 2 weeks or so. I'm wondering because I thought M390 was supposed to hold the edge very well.
@ericasedc11 ай бұрын
Not every company does that steel well. Try Spyderco!
@JustStartingOut-nt8ve11 ай бұрын
@@ericasedc Thank you. You are very familiar with metals, so it really helps. All these knives are very expensive, so I think most people baby them and don't get to know the quality of metals. So, I think we tend to go by the name of the metal, but it does not seem my M390 is living up to the expectation. BTW, I love Native 5 because I clip it in my pocket and I forget it's there, but when I need it, it's always there and it's a nice surprise, especially with the grippy FRN. I agree with you about compression lock, but I think the back lock is actually contributing to the nice surprise of finding Native 5 in a pocket. If it was compression lock, you will most likely remember that you have it from fidgeting. So, while compression lock would increase the fun factor, I think it would reduce the surprise effect. In this sense, I think Native 5 would probably serve the originally intended purpose of Bugout better than Bugout. With Bugout, it may not be there in your bugout bag when you need it for forgetting to putting it back after fidgeting, LOL.

Okay so you’re online and I don’t know if you can answer this…. But, Benchmade or Spyderco? lol. Hard question I know. I started collecting Benchmade for a few years and CRK’s. But I got into spydies big time now. So I couldn’t answer that question myself. 😆. Just an opinion though? The Benchmade Freek full size in M4 is a workhorse as Is the full sized Adamas folder. I can’t think of a spydie that can beat those in toughness? 🤔 Thoughts….

You like the K390 steel. Are you too far from the ocean that rust doesn't bother you? I had to stick with H1 (Spydico Atlantic Salt) until new corrosion-resistant stainless steel emerged. I do, tho, live on a sailboat in New England.
