I used to wonder why people mixed on studio monitors and not consumer ones, as most people will end up listening on consumer grade monitors. What I have learnt is each consumer speaker will color the sound in its own way, emphasising different frequencies. This means that your mix might sound good on your speakers, but not on others. An old trick often used is if you only have consumer speakers, try it on as many devices as possible and see if it sounds good on your portable stereo, bluetooth speaker, good consumer speakers, in the car, on headphones ect.

Another way to put it is that it would be like taking a picture of a picture. Each picture would be more degraded and bias than the last until whatever you have is unusable. Whatever sounds good on one speaker might not sound right on the rest. Or the right details might be lost or way too high in the mix. You need something accurate and honest that reveals every little pixel at just the right color. That's one way to think of it

My JBLs came in a couple weeks ago and I am not disappointed at all. Had I seen this video in time, I still think I would have gotten them; I would also get them again if lost or stolen. They make my mixes so much better balanced than with headphones alone (no more surprises when transferring to a phone or car). Even better -- they look like darth vader. Was highly considering the yamahas, but I figured the extra money could better go towards komplete 13 (feels so far away D: ) This is an excellent video! +1 for the JBLs

I'm using Adam Audio T7V (7 inch ver) for a half a year now, and I gotta say that I don't regret anyhing! Mixing with these is pure pleasure, and I almost never have to correct the mix after listening on car/home sound system/headphones. Sound separation is amazing, ribbon tweeters will never make you feel fatigue, even after 8 hours session. You can easily listen to your favorite music on these and it won't feel that the sound is too flat, at least for me after 6 months of experience. I also tested KRK Rokits, and sound felt too muddy for me, but it's all about listener and his ears I guess:)

I have purchased Behringer B2030A monitors 18 Years ago , 18 years ! They are used constantly , never turned off and even as i write this they are paying the video and chilling since they did a few outside parties as well , survived rain and elements and everything , most people who watch this are not even 18 years old them selves . And i have measured them , against almost all sets available and measrued them with Measuring gear ,you can imagine what 18 years of use tells you about speakers . They work , very good and are flat down to 34hz within +-1dB range . It is impossible to make a better speaker for 1000$, i tried and i failed . That being said almost all of those monitors have exactly the same sound , its just down to material used and shape of the box , rest being mostly the same . But i doubt yours will work for 18 years , there is a reason why , but i wont go in to it right now .

Hi there. A bit of info to implement your review. The KRKs have a double input conector on a single plug. Not the XLR only like you have said in the video. The XLR input plug you see on the back of the cabinet is actually a quarter inch input as well. All you got to do is plug your 1/4 inch cable to the hole in the center of the plug.

I wish Sanjay had talked about front vs rear porting and speaker placement. If you’re in a small space and your speakers are within a foot of a wall, a rear port will transfer low frequencies through the front wall, causing bass to sound louder and less clear/punchy. A front port minimizes that. Definitely something to keep in mind, considering how many of us these days are working in small/medium sized rooms.

Few words on this. I used Neumann KH 310 and Focal Twin in my studio, together with old NS 10. I do use Genelec 8040 from time to time, in control room B. However, in non treated environments, I use Yamaha HS8 and Adam AX7. I have to say a few words on the choice of monitors you have presented here Sanjay. I understand people are going for budget stuff ,and that is how it should be. However, I would not suggest KRK to anyone who is recording broad frequency spectrum. No wonder you loved them - they sound great, but that is the point - not once I mixed on KRKs and came up with mixes with the lack of low end. I think that out of all the speakers you presented, they have most unbalanced frequency response. Which brings me to HS5. Any Yamaha really. HS series is basically a follow up to NS 10. Not so much in frequency response, it is not a clone, but those harsh mids you are talking about is what made Yamaha speakers so widely present across engineering community. I have visited and worked in a few really high end studios and they always have NS 10. Two simple reasons - you hear everything while tracking and if your mix sounds good on them, it will sound good everywhere. HS series have improved low end compared to NS 10 (i quite often do AB test on these), and NS 10 were my first pair of monitors - once i learned how to tame frequencies on those, any other pair of monitors (par Focals, though) have nothing on NS 10. Adam, btw, is amazing monitor manufacturer, but IMO HS5 is better than T5V. Yes, it is nice to see that yellow ribbon, but HS5 just sound better. And one short story that will cover your CR5 surprise - Many years ago, I was working on a project with a tight deadline. I was using my Adam monitors back then, studio was still small. NS 10 were out on driver service. Out of a sudden, my left Adam amp busted. So I had no speakers and about half a day to finish. Called up few colleagues, they were either unavailable or in mid - sessions, so no go there. I got out and in a technics store near my studio, that actually does not sell studio gear, ut computer parts and stuff, I found a pair of Chinese speakers. They werent proper monitors, also had only one speaker powered and other sending signal to another speaker, but i got them since they were cheapest thing, something like 40 £. Finished my project, and found those speakers so nice for both reference mixing and listening to music - I had them many years until I left them as a gift at a friends place. Funny thing, I never knew the name of the manufacturer.
@VladimirCheTV
@VladimirCheTV 2 жыл бұрын
What headphones do you recommend?
@earlsfield
@earlsfield 2 жыл бұрын
@@VladimirCheTV I personally use Beyer Dynamic DT 770 250 ohm. It all depends on what you want and what you work with. Beyers have the same approach as Yamaha or Focal monitors - very harsh in mid range, truthfully presenting layers of frequencies and separates them. It is not a “pleasant” pair, it is truthful - that is why it is a standard for many years. There are more expensive candidates, but I dont think you need anything better than Beyer DT 770 250 (go for 250 ohm version due to the very truthful high frequency response). I will tell you this, if something sounds balanced on Ns 10 and Beyers, usually that mix is good. Sanjay did make a review on a new Beyers (new drivers apparently) but I haven’t tried those. Also, new Beyers are more expensive due to the wireless mode and few other things. I would recommend DT 770 or 990 if you prefer open back cans.

I got to agree on this with you Nemanja, I also had the chance to listen to few speakers, ive used Adam T7Vs before, i think that best monitors in this price range is either yamahas or adam monitors, i think yamahas are better when it comes to depth, 3D space is much betterc compared to these entry level speakers, i find thata adams do better when it comes to vocals and high end overall, its more silky and light, again in that price range i think best when it comes to high end. If I had lower budget, i would still pass all of those speakers but would only take yamahas or adams. Now when i have a little bit better speakers, i would alwaye try to save more for a better pair, pair it with sonarworks and build or buy some great acoustic pannels, those things really do help
@earlsfield
@earlsfield 2 жыл бұрын
@@dominikperkovic3058 Well said and rightfully so. I love Adam’s aesthetics, sound you cant miss, tweeter thing and ribbon, and overall in monitor game they are much more specialized and focused on so many different lines and tiers of monitors than Yamaha. That’s why it us hard for me to say HS are better than Adam, but in this case that is correct. No one can match Adam in high frequency treatment though (in this price range).

@@earlsfield yeah well said, we can talk about adams as one of the best brands when it comes to professional studio monitoring, from this rookie T series, to more expensive mid tier A series and S series speak for themselves... Also i dont know where are you from, im assuming from Serbia, because of your name, maybe you heard of this Croatian producer Skansii, he produced for some pop artist here in Croatia, he has a big ass, well treated studio, maybe one of the best studios in country, I went to buy my adam a77xs from him and he said he loved those, he choose this one over some damn expensive speakers to mix vocals on, ribbon tweeter did wonders to him he said... so yeah it really is a preference and style when it comes to the speaker game, im a fan of having multiple speakers serving multiple purpose, just like you do ;)

I don't actually rely on my studio monitors completely. Before finalizing my mix I listen it on my Headphones, then on my monitors, and then I export it and transfer it on my phone and then listen to the track using phone speakers and then my bluetooth earplugs and finally my car speakers. I go ahead if I'm satisfied all the way through the process. I loved how you said you can mix on anything if you know how your monitors respond, it is absolutely true. Adding to it, I would be bold and say you can mix on anything that defines the spectrum somewhat if you know the response of your output device and it does not have to be monitors, could be consumer speakers, headphones and in-ear monitors. If you are starting out, its a great way to understand sound by checking your mixes on anything, from earbuds to car stereo to monitors. This will trrain your ears a ton and when you would get a decent pair of headphones and monitors, you would get your sound crisp way faster because you've already trained yourself to make anything sound good even on cheap output devices!

2 way vs 3 way The problem with crossovers in 2-way designs is that they are typically set in the 1 kHz - 3kHz range. This area of the midrange is critical for vocals and many instruments in a mix. All crossovers create some degree of phase distortion. With 3-way systems, the two crossovers are usually set outside of this critical range. So any phase distortions introduced, are in less significant ranges.

3 ways are also often crossed over at that frequency range lol. They sound better because they are more drivers to cover the frequency spectrum

I'm using a Mackie MR524 and i noticed it's never included in ANY videos that i've seen it's always the CR5 which honestly i dont see it being even comparable with the rest i guess it's because it's just the more popular option and the MR524 is just one of those that goes completely under the radar and a lot of people are missing out tbh. It easily can compete with the T5V, HS5 those big names i just wish more people are aware of it's existence lol i'm glad i bought it. Underrated af

I purchased the Presonus E5XT along with the Focusrite Scarlett Solo mk3 and XLR (speakers) to audio jack (Scarlett) cables. I must say, this combination is fantastic and highly recommended. Despite reading some comments about potential noise issues, I personally haven't encountered any such problems with this setup. It offers absolutely fantastic value. These speakers can be easily tuned to your preferences, and from my experience, the bass is excellent when needed, but can also be adjusted down if desired. Brilliant value indeed.

Thank you for posting. The JBL studios are a mainstay of studios for 50 years, so I tend to trust them more. I ended up getting the 308’s (8”). JBL seems to have sales every month and it was only a matter of time before the the 308’s went on sale for around the same price of the 305’s normal pricing. I also picked up the Peavy USB to XLR interface I think from amazon for around $50???? Anyway great clean sound from Mac Book Pro to USB/XLR to the JBL 308’s. So quiet that I forget the monitors are on with no 60 cycle hum or other computer noise. For speaker isolation I picked up some wedge foam for speakers that angle my 308’s up towards me for around $20? Since I use my 308’s for normal listening as well on my Mac I probably made a good choice.. That and I have always had JBL home speakers and even new Bluetooth speaker boxes. I find JBL mid range products to be safe choices and go on sale regularly which in my view makes them the value choice for myself. I will check out the isolation platform you recommended. Though currently there is nothing wrong with my wedge foam. Besides I need to save up for the NI Maschine + or at least the Maschine and the Komplete 13 Ultimate when it goes on sale this Winter??? Since music is a hobby for me, yes, I wait till things are on sale since it might be years before I make any money from this hobby to buy a cup of coffee.. but in the end, it’s something I want to experiment and have fun with, and well, we are only on this world once that we are sure of, and every moment spent is a moment you will never get back again, so it’s important to spend time, effort and money on things that you like, even if there is not always a $$ outcome at the end of your endeavors. Hmm not bad for 6 am and 1 cup of coffee.... ok.. off to more Sanjay videos and forwarding some to my friends. :)

I just discovered small simple IK Multimedia iLoud Micro. I use them with Subpac and in my opinion for small home studio this is the best option. Because my room is not acoustically treated now I don’t have to worry about standing waves and bass build up as much as I had to when I had Yamaha HS7’s. Also it’s is were convenient to move around as I’m a student and need to relocate rooms sometimes. This setup is also not annoying neighbours... which is a huge plus for me. So yeah, that said I found my perfect listening setup until I can afford my own property and proper setup.

Great Review Sanjay ! My very first pair of monitors were a pair of Eries 3.5. They were cheap and worked great for just starting out. I then got a pair of krk 5 g4, definitely had more pronounced bass and punchiness. Then I got a pair of Yamaha Hs8’s, Absolutely mind blowing at first, but over time I realized how harsh the mids could be at times and most hi hats annoyed me, I think I should’ve got a smaller version for the size of my room. But now I will be getting a pair of Adams

Ive listened to all of these monitors in most sizes except the stage rights and my favorites were the krk g4s. Their strongest point is their mid range. None of these monitors come close. Because the both mid and tweeter are made of kevlar there is a seemless transition from top to bottom unlike the adams where the tweeter sounds like it plays separate from the the mid. I still dont like the yamahas mainly due to their aluminum tweeter which is just too harsh for me and Ive tried every size they make with multiple listens because I know there is so much hype over them. I also owned the jbl lsr305s first gen which I prefered over the second second gen but in general I never really loved them because I thought they sounded kind of thin and cold overall. The presonus were pretty good. Very middle of the road monitor. They dont really do anything bad, cant go wrong with them.
