I did this same idea but instead of all that working with metal, I simply used a .50 cal ammo box without the lid and it doubled the storage pretty easily. I would like to try fitting a 40mm grenade ammo box into the same area as it's twice the size of the .50 cal box and it does indeed fit in that space (with some modification).

My 23 don’t have that compartment on drivers side. Just the small one on passenger side.
