The place I train at has free sparring and tournament style sparring. We can kick and punch to the head, too. You just need to find a good place to learn that suits your preferences.
@Xayvong Жыл бұрын
You know, it feels weird watching this. I feel super nostalgic, and exhilarated by how intense competing used to be. How hard I had to train and how every match felt like a battle of willpower and ferocity rather than just getting points. Shoot, when I think about it, I bet I would have won most of my matches pretty easily with the new point system. Back then, we got one point for the body, and 2 for the head. That's it. Now we can get points for punches, 2 points for kicks to the body, and 3 to the head ON TOP of spinning kicks adding 2 points to each of those. Then I remember how often I got injured. How often I had to go to the hospital. How often my mom would ask me to quit because she was scared of the injuries I was receiving. How often I would see her cry when I came home wrapped in bandages and gauze just so I wouldn't bleed everywhere. As someone who teaches Taekwondo part time now, I'm glad that the injuries and the danger of competition seems to have become minimized. On one hand, I like that the system focuses on technical skill rather than brutally beating down your opponent. On the the other hand, I feel like WT Taekwondo has lost something in the process. Is it ferocity? Is it willpower? Is it intent to do damage with every strike? I don't know, but it definitely feels different than the way it used to be. I hesitate to teach my students how I was taught to be utterly brutal and mean when they spar. Different ways to cause damage to your opponents so that you can easily win a match against a lower level fighter. It's a different time now, and the intensity has changed. I still teach these styles of techniques, but often wonder if they even still work anymore in the current system of rules at higher levels of competition. Ever since Covid, I haven't had a student that's competing on that high of a level yet, but I guess I'll find out soon. I started teaching again after Covid, and most of my students that want to compete, I've been with since they were white belts. Sorry for the ramble. I guess I've just been thinking about this a lot recently.

Not really... The Original Taekwondo under General Choi Hong Hi was even more brutal. The ROK (Republic of Korea) troops were much respected even by the Vietcongs in the Vietnam War. The earliest TKD instructors were all chosen from the Korean Army by General Choi Hong Hi to spread Taekwondo! Those instructors were brutal and trained you as though you're in the army going for war! General Choi Hong Hi was the one who founded Taekwondo. At that time there were many other Korean Martial Arts such as Kong Soo Do... Tang Soo Do ..Taekyon..! Their military was initially trained in Tae Soo Do but General Choi introduced Taekwondo into the South Korean Armed Forces.

Coming from and having taught old school. I can say that the skill level was definitely better. But it's more then that. We trained with much more intensity. Pushing ourselves to our highest limits. But that all depends on your instructor. A good instructor, should always push their students to be better then them. So this way Taekwondo becomes better through the years. Unfortunately, too many instructors have such big egos. That they do not want any students to surpass them. And won't push them to become their best. And so, Taekwondo becomes less and less aggressive as years go by. And is slowly but surely becoming a joke to a lot of other martial arts. And because of this. Many do not believe it can be effective in the streets. But I assure you, as an old school trainer and teacher. If used right. It can most surely be effective in Street situations. And why I decided to start up my own KZbin channel.

Boxing plus Taekwondo makes your stand-up fighting pretty solid. Good for you!

@@VladimirMiyazaki Good for you! But to be honest in the Real World even MMA ...BJJ ... have its limitations cos its still a sport! I have tried sparring with BJJ guys and to prove to them that I could attack their eyes in the window time they trying to submit me I rubbed ointment on my hands and attacked their eyes by rubbing my hands in their eyes. Feeling the burning sensation they were unable to fight any further. Of course in real world fighting I could poke...scratch .. gouge .. out their eyes! Or like Mike Tyson biting the ears! Even fingers breaking ... breaking the knees with kicks ... groin kicks ... Karate chops to the neck... are not allowed in sports! So as you can see Sports have its limitations in real world fighting/self defense. Yes I started ITF Taekwondo in 1970s .. and over the years have learned Karate (Shorin Ryu..) Indonesian Silat... Aikido...Judo... Tai chi ... Shito Ryu Karate... WTF Taekwondo...and lastly Muay Thai. I love Martial Arts just like some love golfing! I would have love to do boxing and wrestling too if possible but alas... did not get the opportunity and time to do so... Your stand-up is rock solid so if you're interested in MMA/UFC you should do BJJ/Judo/Wrestling. Then you're a complete fighter! Of course your fitness is important too. Good luck!

@@bong9476 I have enough confidence in my striking but as for transitioning to MMA I must work on my wrestling/grappling & submission skills. It's a long process but I will get to it.

@@VladimirMiyazaki Okay good... I have confidence that you can make it. My guess is you're quite young in age ... below 30 years old ... Your name sounds Indonesian or Filipino? Just train hard and consistent and I'm sure you'll make it one day. If you're very good in your stand up then you just need to learn how to avoid being taken down and submitted for example to 'sprawl'. I remembered in UFC 3 the Champion was a Police Officer who was very good with his punches. I'll be watching out for your name in the MMA circuit. Best of luck in your endeavors and good night!

Actually Muay Thai kicks are the most powerful though Taekwondo has more variations of kicking techniques!
