Its not the drivers fault, its the current way of doing things in Formula 1. Before, the top teams would see a talented driver in the lower formulae, and give them a go in their number 2 car - and by a 'go' they got a really good crack at F1, they didnt just get discarded after a couple of seasons, they got several years and were persisted with. The lower teams mainly gave their seats to 'pay' drivers who got their drive through sponsorship. What changed this was Red Bull, or more specifically Toro Rosso. A top team basically having a 'second team' meant, rather than the seats being taken up by pay drivers, they gave the second teams seats to lower formulae drivers to try them out. The other top teams (ie Ferrari and Mercedes) soon realized the advantage of 'second teams' and started, mainly using their position as engine suppliers, to affiliate lesser teams under their 'driver programs', so rather than pay drivers they too started taking drivers from lower formulae and giving them a go at the top level. The advantage of this system is obvious - it has virtually eliminated the much hated 'pay driver' from the sport. The disadvantage however, is the need to choose a up and coming driver and stick with them is gone - the top teams can EACH give 2 new drivers ever season a go (or 3 in the case of Toro Rosso who sometimes swap drivers half way through a year!), but by 'a go' they get one or two seasons to prove themselves if they are lucky, as opposed to the 4-5 seasons a new driver used to get before people started questioning their seat. So where do all these discarded drivers go? F2 and lower has virtually no money in it, however companies are throwing money at Formula E, and teams who want a big draw can do much worse than give their seats to drivers with Formula 1 experience. Hence the HUGE number of 'ex-F1' drivers in Formula E. Blame those little blue/silver cans of energy drink.

As an F1 guy, this Formula E stuff is pretty cool. The coms sound crystal clear. Also what is that little outside line they take when cornering? What benefit does it give you? (if there is one)

If youre talking about the line such as when JEV going wide at the corner, its a mechanic they introduce for FE. Im not sure the name of the specific racing line, but it gives you slight advantage. When activated, it will allow the driver to use more power for few seconds. This manuevre is called Attack Mode (some people will call it Mario Kart or Force-Zero). The other one is called Fan Boost where they can use slightly more power with the help of the audience. Whoever garnered high popularity vote can use this.

Its attack mode, you get 25kw more power for 4 minutes(normally the cars are limited to 200kw) with the trade off of the activating line generally being well off the ideal racing line(thus taking it risks being overtaken), all drivers have to use up their attack mode during the race so you have to plan around the mechanic.
