Hahaha, the new format of this video was a breath of fresh air! I designed a telescope that could cover most bases but with so many options on the market, I believe that a 115/800 triplet APO could cover most bases given the appropriate reducers and barlows
@brandonrunyon2 жыл бұрын
I believe one could get nearly the full range of objects by size with one scope by simply investing in reducers and focal extenders. Perfect example is the edgehd 8, get the standard reducer and you got quite a number of galaxies and planetary nebula, get the fastar for it and you're ready for wider field and larger nebula, throw a 2x on there and you're ready to capture Uranus. The aperture is perfect for visual as well. I'm convinced either a single 8 or 9.25 are perfect lifetime investments to satisfy anyone's ever changing interests and it won't take up your whole house with different scopes of varying focal lengths and lens types. I think that would be better on a budget too.
@brandonrunyon2 жыл бұрын
@@DirkDirk1983 it's more like one of those scopes is a sweet spot and the reducers give you all the option, that doesn't mean aperture is for nothing. The focal length of a C14, even reduced to F2 is different from that of a C8 at F2, but you can just about do all the same objects, aperture counts for resolving power. I can get Neptune with both instruments but I can do marginally better in light polluted skies with the C14 (at same focal length). Now get out into clear dark still skies and see the difference... skies count for even more.

Hi Wido, excellent video... And I like your humor. Regardless of being funny your video really helps getting a grip on the sizes and focal lengths. Hence I don't find the "boring" chart any boring at all. I will basically screenshot that as a reference. Thanks for sharing and all the best from Germany 👍💪

Thanks for your feedback Jiffi! I might be using that excel chart again to go a bit more into depth without the jokes :-). Clear skies (none here atm in The Netherlands, only rain :-)).

@@AstroForumSpace yeah, I'm not too far to the east, same here with the autumn weather. Sometimes the skies are clear but the ground humidity is so high, kinda a like a layer of ground fog. Hard on the lenses and equipment too, almost dripping after a couple of minutes outside... should have gone with a roof terrace instead of a classic ground one :-)) Again, appreciate your work and channel and you willing to share your experience(s).

is a SCT 8" with a corrector good value or spend more HD
@AstroForumSpace2 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky question. I went for an HD because it is hassle free, I don't need to think about that corrector. But I did buy an extra .7 reducer to get the f/ratio to f/7.

Thanks. Photoshop, Pixinsight and deep sky stacker are some of my favourites for deep-sky. Autostakkert 3 and registax are great for processing planets.

Great and funny video. Any chance you could post the graph identifying the best focal lengths for celestial objects of varying sizes? My refractor is 432mm without its reducer and 345.6mm with its reduced.

Hi Paul, that focal length is perfect for the bigger dso's. E.g. Andromeda, orion, rosette, North America, Pelican. Plenty of options!

Great review. How frequently have you found that your Edge HD8 needs collimating?
@AstroForumSpace2 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking about collimating it for the first time after one year and I used it as my main imaging scope.

Thanks, that’s good news as I’ve just bought one to complement my SW Esprit 100ED.

Hope you'll have a great time with the EDGE HD Cliff. I've heard that some people use "bobs knobs" to collimate the edge HD. They are easier to use but require more frequent collimation.
@crm114.2 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard that too. I decided to give them a miss. Getting your screw driver out once a year is hardly a big hardship and the knobs are too easy to knock IMHO.

Great video, thank you very much! I'm currently using an 8" RC but looking for a more portable setup What is the benefit of a small refractor over a 600mm lens?
@AstroForumSpace2 жыл бұрын
Hi Suzanne, thanks! That would be mainly the bigger aperture. You'll be able to collect more light which decreases your f/ratio which relates to the time needed to capture those weak photons from deep space.

Hello! Thanks for this excellent video. I would like to ask you the following: can I use the Celestron Edge 8 HD with Hyperstar and ZWO Asi 1600mm pro camera with its mini filter wheel? ¿Does it work fine? Thanks a lot!!!

Hi, I did not buy the hyperstar myself yet but people informed me that a filterwheel would block (too) much light with the EDGE HD 8". Clear skies!

@@AstroForumSpace Ok Wido thank you very much for your answer. I am undecided which telescope to buy: the Explore Scientific 127 or the Edge 8hd. I want to photograph deep space objects. I have a mount that supports both telescopes and all the necessary accessories, which one do you recommend? I would very much appreciate your answer please. Greetings from Mexico.
@crm114.2 жыл бұрын
I think the 127 would be more versitile for DSOs with the exception of some of the smaller galaxies. Make a list of your top 10 targets and feed them into a ‘field of view’ calculator is my advice. Clear skies.

If you don't need extremely large fields or a very compact telescope, try a Newtonian with a moderate focal ratio, perhaps f/5. As your comment is one year old - what did you buy?
@spacemanschannel63802 жыл бұрын
You could add that there is "nighttime landscape photography" or "milky way photography" where you don't need a telescope at all. Only a digital camera and a wide-angle lens. I recently realized that the milky way is by far the biggest object in the night sky. 😄
@AstroForumSpace2 жыл бұрын
That's an option indeed, but in my opinion its very different from deepsky astrophotography and more in the realm of landscape and nightscape photography. Fun to do (milkyway, startrails, timelapses), but different.
@Astrofrank Жыл бұрын
The simple Newtonian with a focal ratio around f/5 and a good focuser of at least 2" diameter should be one of the most versatile telescopes. Use it with a coma corrector as astrograph (some correctors also reduce focal length for larger field and lower exposure time) for deep sky, use it with a DSLR or larger CMOS camera for sun or moon, use it with a Barlow lens and a fast camera for planets. Use it for visual observations of quite all objects.
