I'm so glad you talked about the flexibility bit. I was so stiff for days and didn't understand why. I didn't help it by hitting the gym a couple days later... my calf turned into a stone and my hamstrings just gave-up...never again. Lesson learned

Hi Stephen I’ve just watched your post Dublin analysis. You looked good when you passed us at Benburb St., where I was stewarding. Congratulations on you National Championship, Paris beckons. Great to hear a top runner express the battles that he and many of us go through. Love the motto Just Another Sunday

Great video Stephen. Currently in day two of Mara recovery, doing very little other than short dog walks, and searching for recovery videos on KZbin 🤷🏻‍♂️

What you're saying resonates so much with me. I've just run my first ever marathon on the 29th of October, two days after were harsh but then I started moving slowly, started doing gentle strength exercises and now I'm back to running, feeling great, even better than ever. Also, the part about your next goal is a golden nugget of this video. When I've found my next run and decided to take part in it, my mentality changed by 180 degrees, I stopped thinking about suffering from the marathon and started organising training and nutrition for the next goal in my head. Thank you for all the work you're doing for us.

After my first Marathon 4 weeks ago I just realized my cardiovascular fitness was above what my body could take. That is why the Marathon is such an amazing and complicated distance... I never had any issues in runs up to 32K. But those additional 10Ks after the 32nd... Be sure those last 10Ks are going to reveal every single weakness in your body and you will pay the price. Stretching, mobility and strengthening. Every single day until my next Marathon block starts next year.

This is such a good description. Started running mid 2022 and ran Berlin Marathon this September. My cardiovascular fitness was able to bring home a 3:13h but i'm still completely wrecked, every run since then has been awful. Wanted to race a new years 10k but will focus on building muscular strength and base miles now. Marathon is a beast

Same observation for myself, it wasn't my aerobic ability holding me back in London this year but my quad strength/endurance. I could barely lift myself up off the toilet seat for a week after the marathon! I'll be focussing on building quad endurance and general leg strength with weighted exercises for the next marathon block.

Indeed, running is just one aspect of marathon training. Diet, mental, mobility, core work, strength/gym work. In fact, getting out and running is the easiest bit.

You do such an incredible job of breaking down exactly what you’re covering in each video, and I really appreciate that. I love your vids and the way they are, but I think you would blow up in terms of social media if you did a “first marathon guide” sort of deal

Just ran New York (3:02). Tough course. Quads were on fire after I finished. Now Focus is on Tokyo in March. Much preferable course.

I muddle through my training as a self-coached runner, then come to a video like this and it brings clarity. This advice very much lines up with my post-marathon experience and is super helpful for my understanding. Thanks!

Great timing! I’m debating whether to book two marathons (6 weeks apart) for my first sub-3 attempt (I’ve started my own channel to document my training 🫣) and this is really helpful advice. Thanks for sharing, Stephen!

Hey Stephen been watching for a while and love your insights. So I'm more of an intermediate runner, having done my first marathon in 3 hours 38 minutes and at the end, my lower back was killing me. I was wondering if you could do a video where you talk about common mistakes during long distance runs, whether it's overstriding, not engaging abs etc... how can we prevent injuries from happening? Thank you in advance mate!

Flexibility is always my problem. I can always get back to strength training once I choose or a race presents itself. After Chicago. I rested, I ate junk food and drank. It’s my thing to reset the body and the mind. Right now I’m maintaining base miles and fitness while eating burgers, sweets, etc until I start discipline training again. This was very helpful. Thank you so much.

Can you do a video on how much fat you are oxidizing on your runs, and compare it to the results reported in these athletes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/opyxkGSIbd2pp5o Apparently Dr. Jeff Volek has done some tests on Olympic athletes and finds they oxidize fat at around 1.7 g/min, even if they have consumed a lot of carbs before being tested. Have you done any of these fat oxidizing tests for your running?

Great content! One thing I miss is recovery of your ❤️‍🩹 . Running my first marathon in Rotterdam 3.36 back in April, noted my rest heart rate was the last piece of the puzzle fully recovered on day 10. How is your cardiovascular health monitored being an athlete?
