About not speeding. I'm a 64 yr old new rider (1999 moto guzzi cali jackal 1100I). Just completed a 4500 km trip through 8 European countries including as many mountain roads as I could find, including high Alpine passes. But also the city center of Milan and other Italian and French cities during rush hour. I started my trip a little apprehensive but relaxed more every day when I found out that if you don't ride too fast, you have always all the time to oversee any potentially dire situation. Not only in chaotic city traffic but also on curvy roads, hairpins and steep inclines and declines.

You are a braver man than me! I have been to Milan in a car twice and its mental. Similar to you, 66 and getting onto a K1300S so am taking it real slow. Original instincts seem to be there but driver awareness (by others) now is just garbage so will be on full alert for every idiot out there. I have no interest in speed or scooting between cars ie treat myself as a car with the bulk of the thing. Apprehensive? Totally but I will be riding very technically ie optimum positioning and taking time

Additionally in traffic: 1) Always be aware of not riding in a car/truck's blind spot. Either drop back, or safely pass a vehicle. It's all too easy for a driver to merge into you. 2) At an intersection, when your light turns green, do like you were taught as a kid, and look both ways (and keep looking) before crossing. Don't be an unwitting target for red light runners,

1. Always cover front brake with 1/2 fingers 2. Imagine being invisible to others and act on it 3. Give yourself a space cushion, drive in a place on the road where theres multiple escape routes in case something happens 4. Most important one is LOOK AHEAD.

Brandon is spot on about pre riding a route. If you plan on going fast on a stretch of road (Especially Twisties!) it is a REALLY good idea to pre ride the route BEFORE you take your speed run. Its risky enough to take a "speed run" at all on the street... but you should only push it on roads you know very well and have scouted before you push it. Gravel, sand, trash, branches, leaves, dead squirrels, live squirrels, live dear, dead dear, farm equipment, construction equipment, slow trucks, cyclists, pedestrians and doggos, 2x4 lumber, drywall sheets, a kiddie pool, tools, bungie cords, rope.... I'm probably forgetting all the stuff I have seen on the roads that I ride regularly in just the last year... not to mention all times cars have been over the yellow line in my lane coming around a corner... Pushing it hard in the street is begging for a wreck tbh... Ride safe people.

Oh wow. I literally got smacked with a kiddie pool last week. It flew out the back of a truck and because I keep that car length space, I had plenty of time to plan what I was going to do. I had no where to go, so I put out my hand and channeled my inner Black Widow and deflected said pool off to the left into the turn lane, where it got smashed by another truck. It was so fast and I'm so glad I leave room and don't speed.

2:14 this is VERY true. if you are not relaxed, it really won't matter how situationally aware you are.....two days before last Christmas, I got on my bike pissed off, leaving my friend's house where I had spent the night. Already pissy and frustrated, I was travelling down the boulevard, in light to moderate traffic on my naked liter bike (its really old, but a power rating of 89hp/61ft-lb on a rev-happy inline 4 tells you all you need to know about riding it in stop and go traffic - I will be leaving anything on 4 wheels promptly). some tricked out Civic is meeting me at every light, revving and trying to get my attention, and literally tries to kill his Civic everytime the light turns green, trying to race me, who isnt even trying to go fast - so when I hit 55 from a light, I maintained that speed, and that Civic could be heard as he red-lined each of his 4-5 gears to go fast enough to blow by me much too close for a 3 lane road. we kept getting stopped at lights together, and the FOURTH time he roared past me 30 seconds after a light changed, we were coming up on my turn, so while he was stopped in the left lane, I was creeping up the median to make a left. I saw him, and all that rage built up in me, and I thought to do something I'd done a few times before to some extremely reckless driver that decided to tailgate me at high speeds as if I was a car, and ride past the driver side at a light, reach out, and fold the rearview forward as I pass. dont judge me on that - it doesnt hurt anything, but the intention was always to remind a car driver what it feels like to be vulnerable, and I had executed the move 3 times before with finesse, not rage. but I was angry, and in my mind, he basically bitchslapped me every time I felt the draft of his beater on my right leg, and heard the tiny pebbles and sand hit my faceshield. so riding slowly down the median, and in a split second, seeing him and deciding to pull the manuever, I was moving too fast, and in that fraction of a second I realized because his car was so low, I would have to reach down to pull the mirror as I passed, and instinctively tried to use my right foot. i kicked at the mirror in desperation, and my foot planted firmly onto his left front fender. I low-side to the left, he drives off, and in the process of getting up, picking up the bike, and telling the good samaritans that stopped that I was fine, I realized I was NOT fine. My left foot was doing tthis uncontrollable flex to the left (similar to standing in a doorway and pressing your arms against the inside for 60 seconds to create the phantom rising of your arms) and I could not close my faceshield, I needed the air if I didn't want to throw up. I was in shock. I rode the 3 miles home with my bars askew, limped inside, and waited what seemed like FOREVER for the initial pain waves and shock to subside. left glove, sleeve and shoulder of my jacket were a little beat up, but I couldnt take a step without extreme pain. when I lay down on my couch or bed, my left foot had to be resting on the outside. Any other position was painful. I had broken my ankle, an injury that ended up needing surgery, which means i was on my feet faster, but I am still not fully recovered 8 months later. I got a little too caught up with the details here, but the moral of the story is, if you are angry, sad, tired, or even hyper, those decisions you make in milliseconds will definitely be affected, and they are the ones that so often decide whether you and your bike will stay upright all the way to your destination. how fast you were going matters, but not nearly as much as how you react to a given threat. Avoid riding until your emotions are no longer overwhelming you, or substantially increase the ever-present odds of you crashing your bike.

one very simple thing to add. learn how to keep your bike perfectly straight in lane, while turning your body nearly completely around. often times in very slow traffic, or when merging, i will look directly at the driver I am about to merge in front of to make sure he sees me.

I have around 3 months of riding and even though there were some potential dangerous situations none of them materialized in a bad way because I wasn’t speeding and had plenty of time to react calmly and do not panic. Also when I’m riding in traffic I do my best to keep up with the flow. Ride faster and you might miss a brake-check, ride slower and you will force drivers behind you to lose patience and act stupid. Also, when riding out of cities look as far forward as you can, time perception warps and makes a huge difference in giving you time to react. Ride safe!

develop the habit of always keeping a finger or two on your front brake, and try to commit using both brakes into muscle memory, because muscle memory is where your mind will go in an emergency. just make a habit of using both brakes when stopping at red lights and you will slowly but surely train yourself to reach for both brakes automatically when in a gotta-slow-down-quickly situation. also, do a shoulder check *every single time* before you change directions, it will save your ass countless times.

Most important is that always be aware of your surroundings and do not trust anyone in traffic, because people in cars are 99.9% idiots. Also, always remember that if you know how to drive, bike stops a lot faster than a car behind you. Where I live, yearly deaths of motorcyclists including an another vehicle are usually explained that "they did not see them".. and one other thing.. do not know if it is a new thing, but apparently in "touring motorcycles" there is this idiotic thing adapted from cars that.. which i do not understand either.. is that daytime, there are these tiny leds only. Use headlights everywhere!

Great video, sensible information. Let's add a few more things. 1. Ride knowing others on the road will do the stupidest thing possible. Think about that, it is the proper way to ride defensibly, covers everything. 2. You do not have the right of way. When you think you do, you will lose. 3, Adding to your blind spot stuff, make sure you can see the drivers face in their mirror if you are in traffic and must stay put. 4. SIGNAL!!! Even if you are 100 miles from civilization use that signal every lane change, every exit, every turn. It is only a small movement of the thumb, and letting other know what you intend to do, may just save you. Not to mention the flashing light makes people more aware of you. Make it instinctive. 5. Be courteous, wave thanks to others who let you pass. They will be more aware of motorcycles and have a better image of us. Give motorcycling a good name even when we are being stupid. 6. On the street learn to use the rear brake, It has so many uses, not least of which adds to your stopping power, which in every case is a good thing. Not to mention, less violent corrections to speed, especially mid corner.. The rear brake is your friend. And of course it is invaluable for dank wheelies. But it would be good for you to dig in to each of these and bring out the fine points. Just a thought.

Its also important for those riders who just received their license not to throw the riding rule book out of the window!!! It takes months if not years of riding in different situations before they can consider themselves experienced motorcyclists. Great job, thanks guys! 🏍️💨

Good video. I've cut motorcycles off on accident more than once. I sure didn't mean to. When I have motorists pull out in front of me on my bike, I try to be cool and think that they most likely didn't mean to. I don't react with anger, but I do try to let them know I was there. I believe that a friendly "I was there when you came over on me" wave is more constructive. If you flip them off or break a mirror, they will be angry and won't think about how they could have killed you.

Firstly, get the right bike for YOU. It is amazing how much safer you feel if you are just comfortable with the bike you have. I have a 250 sport bike, mid peg 865 cruiser and a forward peg 1250 street bike. I feel most comfortable on the forward peg bike (which is twice as powerful as my cruiser). Secondly, and I know it sounds counter intuitive to a nervous rider, head for the freeway/highway. There is no cross traffic from side streets and driveways. It reduces the potential threats to the car in front, beside and behind you. You can reduce that threat further by never having a car beside you unless passing, so you only have to focus on the cars in front and behind. Lastly, put yourself in the lane where you can see as much of the road ahead as possible or road entering traffic can see you (don't ride close to the kerb). If you can see the brake lights coming on 8 cars in front then you are already preparing for the car directly in front to brake, so don't be afraid to move your bike around in your lane. Good luck. Regards.
