You know what would've possibly validated a LOT of these engineering choices? If ED had gone the Battletech route and NOT made your hull your primary HP, instead tying ship destruction to your critical components like your engine and life support. In a BT/mechwarrior game, your mech doesn't go down until its center is blown out, a leg is severed (since they're bipedal and can't balance on one leg) or you're "killed" via a destroyed cockpit. The outer hull is just armor. In ED, your components can all be pristine and your ship still explodes. Kinda silly in retrospect but I think if the hull was purely to protect critical components then not only would targeting become much more important but perhaps SOME of these reinforced/shielded blueprints might at least have SOME value.

FYI, Drive Distributors actually can give you more speed than Drag Drives on very small ships. Eagles, etc. So I'd say it's more niche, rather than useless.

Yeah IIRC, enhanced performance thrusters can actually benefit more from this than from drag drives
@endoblader
@endoblader 4 жыл бұрын
@@Motoboo_Marine yes that's correct! You'll get better results using drive distributors on performance enhanced thrusters....... as long as you keep your ship LIGHT..... I think there's a point where it tips over dependent on the weight of your ship.
@Neo-vz8nh
@Neo-vz8nh 4 жыл бұрын
yes, and in some caes you can fit a smaller thruster to your ship (like 4D to Anaconda), which would be not possible. This has less mass and result in a bigger jump range. So yeah, its more likely a niche.

On very small ships using enhanced thrusters, that are heavy, drive distributors is better

I've actually used reinforced thrusters once. I was missing like 100t on max mass to fit 6D thrusters on Type-9, so I did reinforced1 + drive distributors. Dirty and Clean lower max mass and they were out of the question. So I guess it's kinda 'useful' in really niche builds.

Did he just basically say that reactive armor with thermal resist engineering isn't the best armor combo to have? No wonder he explodes all the time :3

Funnily enough, you get a higher HP value if you Heavy Duty Deep plate your Reactive Surface and use your smallest Hull reinforcements package with a thermal resist upgrade. Resistances are very good afterwards too

I use the Drive Distributor experimental on one of my ships, a Corvette. Only to get the ships mass below the thrusters optimal mass rating. Other than that small exception, I agree =)

I have Drive Distributors on my exploration/fun Imperial Courier; extending the minimum mass means it's actually faster with this than with Drag Drives. But yes, usually you're better off with Drag Drives.

I'd argue light weight armour is decent since it also increases resistances Thermal resistant for hull is good because you can combine it with reactive surface composites which are weak to thermal but are strong in the other two categories. If you chose mirrored surface composites you would have to worry about bringing both your kenetic and explosive resistance up to speed.

My jump-Conda has a 1D distributor, and because of that it can't boost to use the engine capacitor, it has no weapons to use the weapons capacitor, so system focused is the only engineering where it has any tangible benefit

I went all in on charge rate on my distrbutor. Charge Enhanced Super conduits. What does the lower capacity matter if it recharges faster than I can use it. Seriously. Unless I'm taking heavy fire or need to run away quickly, just two pips to everything and I'll never deplete it.

I actually use shielded double braced A rated fsd on all my pvp ships, where power allows it. Relying on thermal conduit a lot makes me really nervous when I used to see fsd malfunction warnings halfway through the fights. Adds little bit of jump range as well. Usually more than enough for jumping in and out Same with shielded life-support. Can be useful on some shieldless hull tank full thermal conduit builds. (I have FAS with 4 srb tc Pa, where I shielded and double braced what I could). Otherwise accurate and funny as always.

Shielded FSD: You put it on a ship whose jumprange is so miniscule anyway, that more FSD hitpoints in case of railsniping make more of a difference then the 0.5 LY of jumprange. Lightweight Armor: Is an explorers choice for those who dont want to use light armor (for whatever reason) Same goes for all the shielded/reinforced modules, most are explorers choices. Thermal Resist armor: On Reactive surface composites it perfectly balances out resistances. Its the simplest choice for armor, even though using heavyl duty deep with an thermal resist hull reinforcement gets you slightly more armor.
@InternetStudiesGuy
@InternetStudiesGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Lightweight engineering (on bulkheads) is for agility fighters and bounty hunters who want a combination of speed and jump range, decent hull hp and resists with reactive armor. Explorers will only go for lightweight bulkheads exclusively. Heavy duty engineering on bulkheads is for sitting in conflict zones, hazres sites and goids, where jump range and agility are not as important.
@markhackett2302

ALL FSD engineering should be increasing the range, but the other options increase it less to add in some other feature or bonus, to make it something that is not ONLY extended range for FSD engineering.

Loose ≠ lose. Different words. There's a loose screw, which needs to be tightened. And then you lose a screw, which needs to be found.

Drive distributors would be the only thing i would disagree with here. Inside of a certain weight bracket they actually do outperform drag drives for speed as outlined by a mister furrycat in this article. forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/drag-drives-vs-drive-distributors-for-speed.405552/ Very niche, "racing ships," ultimately useless because there is no racing in this game, but still nice to know if you are wanting to get every last lick of speed from your eagle.
@musifter9126
@musifter9126 4 жыл бұрын
Racing ships are always going to be under the minimum mass for that bracket. You need enhanced thrusters and a build that requires enough extra mass in optional, weapons, and utilities to not get under, but not be over too. It's very touchy, but there are certain light combat builds that hit it and benefit more from Drive Distributors.
@HudsonPeter
@HudsonPeter 4 жыл бұрын
Drive Distributors are also a key experimental if you want to fit a lower class set of thrusters on a higher mass ship, i.e. an Anaconda exploration build with 4D thrusters.
@musifter9126
@musifter9126 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I changed my AspX explorer's thrusters to Drive Distributors because I kept wanting to use it for other things in the bubble and swapping out the massless 6A fuel scoop for a cargo bay is a large percentage change in mass. I could have engineered a second set of thrusters to swap in, but then I'd have to be where they are or ship them... and I'm too lazy to do any of that. Drive Distributors enable that.
@88HELLJUMPER88
@88HELLJUMPER88 4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I've only ever looked at them in terms of speed. I'll have to take a deeper look at them for my exploration ships.
@musifter9126
@musifter9126 4 жыл бұрын
Well, in the case of my AspX it was the game that told me. It wouldn't let me put a size 6 cargo bay in because if I filled it up, the ship wouldn't be able to move (mass of the ship would exceed that allowed by the Dirty 5-Drag thrusters). Not exactly the best implementation, because the cargo bay itself should be fine, I just shouldn't have been allowed to fill it all the way up. If I can carry 48t, I should be able to do that, instead of forcing me to a size 5 and limiting me to 32t.

I think many of the worthless things in the game are just fossils from the alpha. They became useless after big nerfs to please whiners, desperately trying to balance the Open World, which is obviously impossible, humanity created sports to make "peaceful" balanced competitions.
