I upgraded as well on a few of these tools that you mentioned. I bought the fuji sprayer wow what a difference that makes, than I got the Festool and Bosch sanders wow another huge winner there I picked up a track saw I did these dresser for my daughter with 1000 worth of wood she wanted a faceless frame and I needed dead on miter joints that was a game changer there.

It's amazing to have a tool that just does its job as it's supposed to, isn't it? Love it!

Lots of good information. Allow me some comments: First, for your panel glue ups, consider using a biscuit joiner in lieu of the domino. If I could only have one of these two tools, I'd pick the domino. It's a more versatile tool. Dominos strengthen joints. Biscuits don't. But, you don't need to strengthen the joints in a panel glue up. All you want is help in aligning the joint. For that, dominos and biscuits work equally well. However, for a panel glue up, a biscuit joiner is faster and less expensive than a domino. Second, given that you like your premium random orbital sander so much (and I don't blame you), try a quality pneumatic random orbital sander. They are smoother and have even better dust collection than the electric versions. Plus, they weigh less, so they're even less fatiguing to use -- particularly when sanding a vertical surface. You may have to upgrade to a larger air compressor because pneumatic sanders consume a lot of air. If you do, you can start using pneumatic drills and screw guns. These tools are much smaller and lighter than their electric cousins. They fit in tighter spots. The only real downside to these tools is the noise they make, which is why you're using hearing protection anyway, right?

A slightly more affordable system to dominos is biscuit joiners. Works the same but makes a slot for a “biscuit” shape instead. My company used the dewalt biscuit joiner to help with alignment when doing big or odd angle/placement joiners. You can get different sized biscuits and just adjust the setting on the tool for which one you use. Or just mill your own by thicknessing a board to match a biscuit and then either cut rectangles, use a router and template to cut a strip of biscuits that are properly shaped or if you have a concern you can cut your own there.

I've always been disappointed with the results of budget biscuit jointers. When used for alignment there's still so much slop that I wanna use cauls, so why bother with the biscuit in the first place if I still gotta use clamps and cauls for alignment. For same and similar reasons it's just an alignment tool.. not joinery, so you can't use biscuits in place of a mortise and tenon to make a structural joint like you can a domino. Once you step up to something like the Lamello biscuit system that's untrue and it's basically a domino alternative, that costs twice as much as a Festool domino....

Great list Caleb. I have to admit I've never seen one of those huge gem sanders for woodworking. It's comical how much hate the domino (and festool in general, really) gets from individuals who have never touched one. Watching a few demos clearly shows how much time it can save. Definitely a production tool though, and that's why it costs what it does. Still cheaper than a lamello. As much as I'd love a domino, my dowelmax has been serving me faithfully. It's not as fast as a domino, but still pretty quick when you factor in how easy it is to use. I agree completely on a quality sander. I sold all my big brand sanders and invested in the festool ets ec 150/5. It's been great. I looked at the surfprep, but honestly couldn't find any reviews by anyone who actually purchased one (all gifted, "supplied for review"), so those "reviews" don't carry much weight. Tracksaw was a gamechanger for me too. Accuracy on the go, dust collection, safety, etc. I wouldn't be without one. I don't have the room for a huge planer so I have to make do with my basic 13". It does the job; I work within its limits. I do agree completely on the sprayer. One thing I highly recommend is 3m's PPS setup. It makes cleanup so easy.

The dowelmax and bead locker are both fantastic alternatives.. but like MOST budget v premium tool, it just comes to down to a matter of time required. You can get great results either way with proper attention. I've got the PPS for my Fuji and LOVE it, it's awesome. Ordered when I bought the sprayer.

Definately right about the premium sander. I have a Mirka Deros, and I do not dread sanding, and there is almost no dust. It is light too. You could say a pleasure to use. Those well made heavy ones should not be used for final sanding. Anyone on the fence? Get a nice light Mirka or similar. Worth every penny.

A premium sander is a great investment in your body. The reduced vibration and ergonomics make them much less wearing on the body. I love my 3M Xtract 6" ROS, worth every penny.

This is a great video, Caleb. I have a lot of the tools you mentioned and when I upgraded, it was definitely an eye opener. I got a hard dose of the "you get what you pay for" lesson. Sometimes spending a few dollars upfront saves a TON in the long run.

Thanks man! A couple of saws, hand planes, chisels, and a scraper and there’s almost nothing you can’t build with wood. Same goes for a power saw, drill, and router. Practically everything after that is just a time saver.

If you’ve got the space and budget they’re pretty awesome, especially if you work with a lot of sheet goods or large panels. If you mostly use your table saw for ripping boards (that’s me), then you don’t get much more from it n

Thanks! Just pivoting a bit. My project videos don’t even pay their editing, been taking time to reevaluate how to take the channel and in the meantime just handling commissions off camera and making progress on the backyard transformation (which is getting recorded). I’ll be posting regularly again for at least a few months 🤣
