I second the CharJenPro Hub and Adapter, since I been using them. Pretty nuts out of all those "portable" ones that CharJenPro beat them all, makes me rest assure my purchase. Although, the torture test was somewhat off as you didn't use the USB-C power delivery port to power up the devices. Basically any hub requires more juice to run multiple external drives. I experienced the same thing when I connected 2 external hard drives, but once I connected the USB-C power, it's all good. The OWC is a beast! I looked into those but for over 3.5 times the price and for my needs, I passed. Thanks for the great review of all different kind of hubs Matt! We Macbook Pro users are sure happy about it.

Does the second USB-C plug (the one that doesn't let you charge the laptop with a USB-C power cable) in the flush-sitting adapter actually give additional juice for an external 2.5" spinning drive that is connected to that port? I want to be able to connect two 2.5" spinning disks to my 2-port Macbook Pro 13" without Touch Bar, and was worried the flush-sitting adapter(s) wouldn't be able to handle it, and also that the second port is blocked, not letting me break up the power load with one drive using an adapter and one drive direct to computer.

Hi Guys. I just wanted to give you guys an update. Crazy it got this many likes! The hub is still going strong. Something to note: CharJenPro customer service is awesome, even though it was my fault not using one of their MacStick adapters correctly, they were fast. I give them my support for sure. www.charjenpro.com/premiumhub

@@fighterpilot12 I know I'm a year late but better late then never. I assume the first question is for the MacStick. Yes, the second USB C port is for data only. It does not charge the MacBook Pro. I have my external SSD and spinning disk drives runs fine.

An unexpected but nice tech video from you Matt. Covered all the bases well. As for the power issue, yes a fast mechanical drive will need it's own power supply. There is only so much juice a computer can put out per port. That isn't the fault of the adaptor really. Personally I wouldn't want a dual port anything like those as sideways or twisting movements will break the laptop ports. At the very least I'd run it off two extension cables. And now I'm sad about my poor laptop that only has one USB 3.0 port. I'll go cry in a corner now with my marmite.

I just have one question though, does any of these interfere with the wifi? That's the problem that I kept encountering with these adapters. I've read it up, it does say that USB 3 in general do work in similar range of 2.4GHz with wifi, and that's why it interfere with the wifi's range and it causes the wifi to shut down immediately as soon as I'm using the adapter. One of the easiest fix that I found is to change my wifi to 5GHz, which works fine but I can't just do that to all wifi I'm using (my office's or other public wifi).

Have a MacBook Pro 2017 for school, never used a dongle, just needed a usbc->usb adapter (1$ for 2 of them lol). I know for some people is pretty uncomfortable but let's be honest... We all will be obligated to use usbc accessories from 1 year from now, just start a bit sooner. Also people are over estimating ports, having 2448 ports that you never really use it's ugly and a hole for dust that goes directly to the motherboard and under the keyboard. It's not better living with only USBCs but also it's not that worse. :)
@mootsym
@mootsym 6 жыл бұрын
It may not be an issue for the typical college student not involved in music/media (not saying this is you), but for other people the lack of ports IS worse, especially when you consider the beyond premium price tag for these computers. Just a few years ago they were monster machines ready to handle any job. Now we have to make an ADDITIONAL purchase of an adaptor, or 2 or 3, while also paying a few $100 more for the computer itself compared to a few years ago. That's why it's worse. It's downright insulting for Apple to ask nearly $2,000 for a laptop that has had all the useful ports REMOVED. ridiculous. and this is coming from a Macbook fan!

The Satechi Deluxe (Type-C Multi-Port) is the same exact product as the Juiced Systems BizHUB and Promate CoreHUB-C. They just have different packaging and labels painted on them, but come from the same source. I agree the Satechi is awesome, but I personally use the Juiced Systems version because I wanted it in black.

Luddy33 I'm looking for a hub currently. I wanted at least 2 USB 3 ports, an SD card, Ethernet, HDMI, and USB C passthrough charging. So I found that the Juiced systems BizHUB was the best and it's fairly priced considering what it offers. And I especially liked it because a trusted source (LinusTechTips) highly recommended it. What do you think of it? I'd like a consumer's perspective. Does it die on you randomly and does it heat up alot? I've read many reports saying that some ports will randomly stop working, and that it gets too hot to even touch. Any issues like that with yours?

You right the problem is the lack of power from the laptop... even if the FireWire standard should let me connect many HDrive, with more than 5 it crashed. So when I purchased my new MBP late 2017, I was shocked that with only 3 USB 2 and 3 standard the powere charger of 61W from Apple was not able to fulfill my normal needs (I'm a sailing photographer). At the sea house, where I've a HDrive (the huge backup) with PD, I connect the "small" charger to the dongle and the HDrive to the laptop (so I keep the speed up). At home I bought the bigger charger from Apple, +80W, and connected straight to the dongle, so HDrive are still powers even after I ejected.

@Jo-Remi Saada If you're still hesitating, go with the 2017, because what these guys aren't taking into account, is the fact that these winning dongles above leave two ports free for even further expansion, and you're also not married to old and outdated IO ports, because you can remove them whenever you don't need them.

Jack Skellington macs last way longer than 2 years, my uncles 2011 MacBook Pro is still going strong and that’s 6 years old and I have the 2013 MacBook Pro retina, which is approaching 3 years old and it’s still like it came out of the box. Meanwhile my parents low performance cheap (what mean by cheap is €500-€700)windows computers ( which they owned well before I got a computer of any sort, mums is 7 years old) are slow as crap and can barley run word. The price you pay for a Mac you will end up paying on maintenance for a pc, especially cheap low performance ones( which like I said above is 90 of that 95%). Apple can afford to make their computers non upgradable because they know how well their computers run and how long they last. I had one of those cheap midrange windows computers ( cost €600 but got it on sale for €400 )and after a year the hard dive broke.... twice..... I have not had one problem with my Mac since day one. But what I do agree on is that they are being run by marketing people and they are getting very greedy. I dont necessarily agree with the price they are maxed out, but the base models are more agreeable.

What if you want to attach two display-port monitors to your machine? You can't. Three or four USB devices? Not without a hub. Power your computer from the right side because your computer is on the left side of a table or you're left handed? Nope. Want a single connector to plug in at your desk? Try at least three for my setup (power, both thunderbolts for displays). It's annoying to have to buy all the dongles no doubt, but USB C and TB3 are the future. I was a skeptic, but it's been a few years now, and I don't ever miss my old machine.

BTW, I've gone with the "A Fistful of Dongles" and "For A Few Dongles More" (#SpaghettiWesterns) approach. Most of the time, I'll be using no dongles at all. When I need to dongle, it'll usually be for a single purpose. And with four ports, I can have multiple single purposes running simultaneously if need be, all with relatively independent power and data pathways. And when Nikon forces me into XQDs, I'll get a dual SD/XQD reader. With any luck, there will be one that connects directly to USB-C by then.

I've really begun to like the J5Create brand of products. I feel that they are solid built (most have metal casings to help dissipate heat too). But to be honest, I think when it comes to hubs, you really want one that's powered (or at least has the option to plug-in a power adapter to power the hub) as a USB-C/3.0 port can only put out so much power, I believe 20 watts for USB 3.0 and USB-C I believe is limited to about 65 watts. So it helps if you get a "powered" hub. Often times, these hubs can still work without the AC adapter but sometimes at a reduced speed. Where the powered/AC adapter is helpful is if you plug in a lot of devices (or even one or two) that run off the USB port, like a portable USB hard drive. If the drives draw too much power from the hub, it can cause it to act funny in the OS and disconnect and re-connect repeatedly and/or unexpectedly.

MKDGO 9 in 1 USB C hub is for all who constantly have too few connections to the PC or notebook. the paint is a perfect match with space grey 2017 Macbook pro. the paint is basically identical. In addition, the adapter is all metal, even the usb-c male port to connect with Macbook is wrapped by aluminium, very high quality feel. All the connections people would normally expect like USB and media card readers is standard on most devices. HDMI and Ethernet are a huge bonus. you don't need extra dongles for your MacBook Pro. The device does get a little hot with multiple items connected and there are physical limitations on how many connections can be simultaneously used. So before using multiple devices at the same time or using for a long time, you need to prepare a radiator for hubs. This one provides many functionality with a lower price, a smaller body.

The ones that plug in directly (i.e. without a cable) may be faster because they don't have a cable. Really fast protocols are susceptable to issues with cable quality and length - even really expensive data centrer quality kit worth hundreds of thousands of dollars can slow down due to cables being longer or defective. These issues don't always cause the transfer to fail, but sometimes it just causes the protocol to throttle down the speed.

I have a brand 2018 New Mac Pro and 2017 New Dell XPS. I have two New Dell monitors each with HDMI. I need to be able to hook each each lap top(not at same time) so I can use both monitors. Which docking station gets this job done for me utilizing both HDMI cables and the ability to hook up Mac Pro And Dell XPS?

The CharJen with cable works a lot better with multiple things if you go ahead and plug up your MacBook Pro charger via the USB C passthrough. I don't know if it's a problem with the hub or the port on the MacBook Pro itself, but there's just not enough power to run multiple devices. That'll probably be true for any hub like these, I think. You just need external power to charge the devices plugged into the hub. I like that CharJen, but I do occasionally have issues with SD cards transfer rate dropping precipitously. It is intermittent though, and only happens when many things are plugged into the device. Funny that my own research led me to that hub before seeing this video. Yay!

This has been an invaluable vlog. Thank you . I got the chargen (with the short lead as if there is a case on the Mac book then it won’t fit . The owc is epic but it’s biggest flaw is it could do with an additional usbc so it could run two 5k monitors and plug an iPad Pro in . Also it charges at 60w so it is a slow charge for a Mac book pro 15 inch , sadly the cost of the chargern’s tripled after this vlog on Amazon Uk - I guess they owe you Matt

you can buy small individual USB 3 to USB C and vice versa adapters off the Net for under $20 American. The adapters are the size of an American nickel and simply plugs into the desired port. The transfer speeds are good. I have tried this and it works. I was able to add a USB C port to my old laptop this way. The vice versa adpater can put a USB 3 port on a USB 3 device.
