No matter what Sohyang sings, she injects life into you. She is the most extraordinary woman I know of. The guy in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish group Westlife. The television program was a tribute to him and his band, and every performer that night sang one of their hits. Westlife had a monster hit in the UK with "You Raise Me Up," thus Sohyang sang this in tribute to him. Shane told Sohyang that after hearing her version "the hairs on the back of my neck were standing up" and it was "amazing" and "outstanding!" Not hard to see why, eh? The music for the song "You Raise Me Up" was originally written by a Norwegian group called Secret Garden, while the lyrics were written by an Irishman named Brendan Graham. Mr. Graham saw Sohyang's performance and was absolutely thrilled by her rearrangement of the music and rendition, so he had the Irish embassy in Seoul get in contact with Sohyang to let her know that he felt her version was the best ever. Sohyang had to really pull back on concerts after this appearance, and thought it might actually be the last one of her singing career due to the serious pneumonia. Thus the Irish embassy had a difficult time finding Sohyang but they did finally get a hold of her and delivered Mr. Graham's message. Sohyang was named by her grandmother, whom she believes God inspired with the name even though neither her parents nor grandmother were Christians. Her name means "enjoy the light" as people have correctly informed me. Sohyang's favourite movie star is Brad Pitt. Like "duh," eh? What woman doesn't love Brad Pitt? Ha, ha! 😎 Sohyang is a 100% self-taught singer except for a handful of sessions with Seth Riggs, which she didn't talk about in the interview I learned this from, so I think she had her Seth Riggs lessons after 2009 when this interview was recorded. She said she spent time with one of the producers of Boyz II Men while on vacation in California and apparently learned some audio recording techniques because he had a home recording studio. When she watches movies she doesn't take her hubby along because she wants to concentrate on the film without anyone interrupting or talking to her. Sorry hubby, but you can be so distracting and annoying at the movies! 😝 Sohyang likes action movies! She carries her Bible with her most places. It is an English New International Version and she tries to read five chapters a day, because it helps her stay fresh on her English. Oh yes, Sohyang wanted to be involved in musicals on stage but was offered the role of Carmen, which she turned down because Carmen was a prostitute. It sounded like she was offered prostitute roles repeatedly, so she more or less gave up on anything operatic. Though, of course, she did appear in the South Korean stage production of "The Sound of Music." She is just one of those naturally wholesome women, and I think that is one of the reasons we like her. 😇❤ Sohyang is also analytic to the nth degree! She will listen to a song she likes over and over until she is satisfied she knows it inside out. The bass line, the drums, the vocals. She keeps going until she has almost worn out the recording. Well, she didn't say that last part but it is pretty obvious that she knows her music and when she decides to cover a song, she is going to cover it like it has never been covered before! And don't we all know it!?!! 🎸👍💘🎸

This Master Class performance from the Phenomenal So Hyang is even more impressive given the fact she is not well here. Some time prior to this event, she was released from the hospital, still recovering from one of her numerous bouts with pneumonia (eight times between 2016 - 2020). Her physicians advised her to cancel, to not talk, and to just rest. So Hyang did not want to disappoint the audience. Furthermore, she believed her singing career was over, and she decided to sing one last time. Afterwards she was readmitted to the hospital. She disappeared from public singing for nearly two years. When she returned in 2020, she proved her technique is ROCK SOLID!! Her range is still ridiculous and her breath control remains insane.

Sohyang has given us so many awe-inspiring performances but when she sings about her faith, this is her sweet spot, her zone. Instead of a stage to amaze our sensory functions, we get an opportunity for spiritual awakening. Once you come to know Sohyang, you would realize that seemingly difficult singing feats are just musical ornaments in her performance. We stop to be amazed by her vocal dexterity and prowess. Yet this performance is less about her vocal skills, but her mastery of artistic interpretation and expression with the arrangement of this classic. She used this performance to tell her personal story, presumably about her faith.

My favourite series of Sohyang is King of Mask Singers. Even in that competition, she was very sick and struggling to recover to perform one of the song. Sohyang is a perfectionist. She would practice countless times before her performance. For that particular occasion, she recounted that she did not have the time to practice. She felt someone was with her as she performed that song. It was such a beautiful song.
