The G100 is way more capable than the Sony. Though the Sony will kill the G100 in focus performance. That DFD is the best so far in a Panasonic lineup is like saying it is the best of the annoying. I had a G7 i loved except the breathing background. Though Manual focus kills that. Color was exceptional, and OLED viewfinder was nice too. Seeing what you get. You can get a super wide lens for the Panasonic where the Sony you are stuck. Focal reach a long way, the Sony will fall behind again.Panasonic's own 45-150 has the Sony beat. If Panasonic discovers PD AF, I will forget Sony forever, till then, Sony is still the focus champion. So versatility G100 kills the Sony. These are fun cameras, but I think the Panasonic is the better buy for me overall. And I am a Sony guy.

Thanks for making this video. Just picked up the G100 and I think it is awesome. I was already using MFT's before so had lenses that are compatible. IF the Sony has mobile app control of it, I would say a plus towards that it to control the zoom from your phone if shooting on your own...so you don't need to keep leaving the shot. Otherwise from photo quality to shooting quality I am very happy.

Thank you for this great review. This Sony camera mics look fantastic, but the audio quality sounds disappointed. Sony's user interface looks terrible as usual. However, I agree that their direction is interesting. 😺 G100 audio sounds great! The stabilization looks usable. However, I feel that it has many things, that are, flash, EVF, big grip, which make it heavy and expensive. Panasonic lenses with OIS, for example, 12-35, 10-25, are too heavy for vlogging and too expensive for me, so its lens interchangeability doesn't make me want to buy it.

Nice video and scenery! Best solution for your mic! Of course you want to be the camera's working as you wish out of the box. But guess every camera had its quirks and/or shortcomings. For example UURig has two nice affordable grips for the ZV-1 with both a better placement of the tripod connection and 'free' space for changing the batt on a tripod. Als they have a full case as does SmallRig has. I'm a MFT shooter for a long time now(since 2012) both a mix of Olympus and Panasonic gear. Although I haven't use the G100 C-AF is ok for stills but often not for video is my experience.. Tip for the Sony is filming without any kind of in body stabilisation, upload your footage in the free Sony Catalyst software and add stabilisation as you wish or need afterwards. It makes use of the ZV-1's gyroscope data and does a very good job.

I´d rather use my Sony A6300 & a decent 30mm lense if I´d ever feel the need to do vlogging. Tested the ZV1 in a local electronics store today. Honestly: 800 bucks for trhat kind of cheap build quality and massive lack of features is way overpriced. My A6300 cost me 930 bucks last year.

I've never overheated my G100 in 2 years of usage -- and I've filmed a lot of outdoors in the summer in Florida. I have no idea what you're talking about -- just about every Lumix made has a shutdown temperature of 105 degrees F. They are much higher temperature limits than Sony or Canon.

I have been looking for a sports video camera with a higher resolution like 4K 60p. GoPro has most of these features except for one big negative... The ability to see a preview of the recording in progress on my iPhone. For the sports I capture I need the camera at a higher elevation which takes the camera out of my hands. I know Panasonic has a great app for that. The other issue is sports matches take a long time to complete and battery life is equally important. This can lead to overheating too. Thanks for the heads up about the G100 inability to attach an external battery. A compromise must be my option?

The whole thing about plugs ins like microphones or earphones getting in the way of the pop out screen is absolutely ridiculous, I never ever have a problem because I orientate my screen 45 degrees from the back of the camera! In other words when the screen is in the back of the camera I pull it out 45 degrees spin it then push it the rest of the way forward, nothing ever in the way!

Long live the zv1 and the canon m50. That Panasonic fixed old Panasonic issues especially AF. Any camera with a screen must open to the side. Never get a camera that can't take an external microphone. Can someone explain what is so Important about background blur. Does anyone watching a video complain that the background is in focus? Oh my god, I can't deal with the video I am watching. The damn background is always clear and in focus. I hate it.

'bit of an oversight'... well that sums up the most things regarding the G100. What an EPIC FAIL. MFT really has gone downhill fast (and I'm a fan of and heavily invested in the system since the GH2). Still running the G9 for photography and the GH5 for video production... but how long is it gonna be before I feel like changing systems? Not a fan of everything a fullframe system means so it would be APS-C/S35. Guess waiting for either GH6 or X-H2 to be a crop sensor Canon R5 equivalent. Did get the G7 X Mark III from Canon to check out, but sold it the moment I heard of the Sony ZV-1. That's now my go-to compact 'don't worry'-device, when my phone (Leica collab Huawei P30 Pro) doesn't quite cut it and need reliable C-AF. Where again Panasonic royally screwed up. The LX100 Mark II is a rather embarassing update. With the LX100 being the first premium compact of its kind you'd expect them to iron out the gripes people had with it, learn a thing or two what to improve on, but it's hardly any added value over the original. They should've made something like the ZV-1. It's sad... I want these companies to do well, but everytime it's more facepalm than cheering...

⳽ᖾiz I vlog on my Galaxy s10 and then then I just picked up the G9 to mix in some slow motion shots for a bit of a cinematic feel. These “vlogger” cameras seem to be about the same quality as the phone to me. And the phone is so convenient. I mainly shoot on the S1 for professional work, but the G9 has really impressed me.

The tripod socket issue isn't a small one. All my gear it setup for quick realease ... either Arca or mini-QR (china sourced). I simply won't buy a camera that defeats my QR gear. Maybe a cage could get around this obstacle, but that adds more weight and cost. Sorry Sony.

I'll take a Galaxy s10 over either of these for vlogging. The audio, video, and stabilization looks to be better on the s10 than on either camera. You can get a refurbished s10 on Amazon for like $400. The best part is you can do all the editing on the phone too! I do it all the time for nature vlogs.

I'm a Lumix shooter with good investment into MFT gear. The Sony takes the crown here. Panasonic's first mistake was removing their legendary IBIS. WHY? Secondly, the AF is improved yes (and I say this as someone who always does MF during video making anyways), but the Sony is absolutely what you should go for. It's simply just that advanced and frustration free. Thirdly, If you are a vlogger, chances are you don't care about interchanging lenses. You just want a camera that's pick up and go. If you WANT more versatile camera for interchanging lenses, go for the cheaper GX85 kits, with that IBIS bundled in for free. Panasonic missed the mark. But hey, at least the video quality is good, the audio is improved, and it's smaller.
