A small edit: the microphone you displayed as the Rode NT1a is actually the Rode NT1kit which is reviewed as being a generally better microphone with better accessories and a better response that solved the “harshness” in the highs that many people experienced with the NT1a. Other than that, thanks for the great video and info you provide on your channel!

Lee Stevens Hi Lee! I totally understand. The Shure SM7B is a dynamic microphone that has a slight color to it. You need something more transparent and more sensitive to pick up your vocal tone and dynamics. Something like a bluebird from Blue or an AT4040. The Shure KSM42 SG is a bit more expensive but it’s the transparent/Pure translation king in this price range. I hope this helps!

Your video on the sm58 was one of 3 reasons why I purchased it! The other 2 reasons were that Lana Del Rey used it to record all her vocals for her entire Ultraviolence album (she’s one of my faves) and, most importantly, I was able to test it on my own voice when I did a songwriter’s course last year! So that’s what I’ve been using to record my vocals these days with great effect. Couple other mics I’ve experienced are the at2020+ (usb) and the MXL 990 (xlr). I made a video about my honest thoughts on them on my channel called “how to go viral on soundcloud using a meme”, so if that’s useful for anyone starting a home studio I’d recommend watching it!

A very unknown one, but it's just that good: The Superlux E205 for 40€ (probably 40$ aswell if its available in US). A little bit of why I can absolutely recommend it: I own a small studio mostly equipped with AKG and Lewitt microphones, and since trying cheap gear became like a second hobby to my normal studio/live mixing/recording work I do, I bought a whole batch of actually budget gear, packed that Stuff and drove to a friends Studio to have a big mic shootout. Neumann, Lewitt, AKG, Audio Technica, Schoeps, Manley all there in a bunch together with the cheap stuff, which almost felt sacrilegious. Now I don't want to make a pages long comparison, as there were a lot of interesting results coming from that day, but what blew me away the most was the direct comparison of my AKG C-414 vs the E205. It. sounded. amazing. And what finished me off after de-essing (which was a bigger issue in the 414 than in the Superlux to begin with) and equing some not so nice parts away from both mics, I PREFERED THE E205. Which felt so wrong, especially since the (especially the C414B-ULS with the original CK12 capsule) 414 definitely ain't cheap microphones. Now, I didn't do any scientific measuring, and I'm pretty sure the 414 has a better resoluted high end, but when you just listen to it, dry and in a mix, the E205 just sounds very airy, and smooth in the high end, has a nice little presence boost in the low end without sounding boomy, and just a very pleasing sound for Vocals. I'm also sure that the 414 will be a lot more versatile (I'll next test the superlux on other sources like drum overheads and stuff and it most likely won't hold up as well in those areas), but again, for that vocal take, that singer, in that room, the E205 just sounded better. And for 40 bucks, the only wrong thing you can do is not buying it basically. And thats what I'd call a true budget solution with a great sound.

Electrical Engineer here Digital Audio Today’s digital audio recording equipment we are going from 24-bit digital to 32-bit digital audio this is beyond crazy. It will also mean that condenser microphones are on its way out and dynamic and ribbon microphones are on the way in. Condenser microphones are too noisy for 32-bit digital audio. The useful signal to noise ratio of a high quality condenser microphones is 85 decibels whereas dynamic and ribbon microphones with Neodymium Iron Boron magnets are passive devices with much higher output levels and no internal noise compared to condenser microphones that need preamplifiers, DC blocking capacitors, audio transformers, and phantom powering this creates more noise than can be tolerated in a 32-bit digital audio systems. My custom made XLR Microphone DC Coupled Differential Microphone Preamplifier The key to getting the lowest possible noise with the greatest amount of gain is only using the lowest noise components such as Texas Instruments ultra-low noise operational amplifier LM4562, metal film resistors, ceramic capacitors, tantalum capacitors for power supply filtering 4 9Volt batteries 7912 7812 linear voltage regulators, DC coupling no DC blocking capacitors no audio transformers. Of course, it only works with dynamic and ribbon microphones. My custom-made microphone preamplifier has a 60-decibel gain with a 100Khz low pass filter. Ribbon microphones must use audio transformers but there are ways of improving the performance of audio transformers. Wire directly from the ribbon microphone capsule is very low impedance, lower voltage, and higher current. The audio transformer turns ratio converts from low impedance to higher impedance lower current to higher voltage. The output impedance on a ribbon microphone is 6 Kilo Ohms compared to dynamic microphones 600 Ohms. Most audio transformers have poor low frequency response at 30 to 40 hertz at the low end. Quadrupling the windings on a typical audio transformer will allow lower frequency response below 10 hertz. Using ferrite core toroidal transformers greatly reduces external hum and noise pickup, and far less audio distortion with wider audio bandwidth. Dr. Thomas G. Stockham, Jr. who founded Soundstream digital audio got it right the first time. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundstream Dr. Thomas G. Stockham, Jr. his first 16-bit analog to digital and digital to analog converters at 50Khz sampling rate digital audio interface was the first audiophile digital audio system. He used a DC coupled differential preamplifier for his 4-channel digital audio interface using a Honeywell data recorder with a Reed Solomon error correction system. Every digital audio system should use XLR DC coupled differential preamplifier before the analog to digital converter. It guarantees the lowest possible noise and the greatest frequency response. Soundstream Digital Audio The first commercial Soundstream 16-bit 50Khz sampling rate digital audio recording was Diahann Carroll With the Duke Ellington Orchestra Under the Direction of Mercer Ellington - A Tribute to Ethel Waters (popular music on the Orinda label) in January 1978. I have this CD and its sounds great. In 1978 dollars it cost Dr. Thomas G. Stockham, Jr $150,000.00 each to make his digital audio recording system and only 18 were made. I’m getting the SoundBlaster K3+ USB Powered 2 Channel Digital Mixer for $129.99 for webcasting. The SoundBlaster K3+ 24-bit digital audio at 48Khz sampling rate digital audio interface and a SoundBlaster X-Fi HD external soundcard that has 24bit digital audio at 96khz sampling rate. With a gaming laptop is dirt cheap and much better sound quality than the Soundstream digital audio interface and a Honeywell data recorder. That’s technology!

When he's talking about the Rode NT1a, the picture is the NT1 not the NT1a. They are two completely different microphones. The NT1's frequency response is pretty flat with just a slight bump up around 8k-10k. Where the NT1a is kinda crazy with a slight bump in the 100-300hz range with some sharp bumps up all through 3K-12K. Far too bright for my liking on my voice. There may be some voices where the NT1a sounds great, but It's easier to EQ the NT1 since it's already pretty flat across the board, than it would be trying remove all that peakyness in the upper ranges of the NT1a. You couldn't go wrong with one of each, but if I had to choose one over the other (and I do) I'd go with the NT1 over the NT1a (and I did).

yes the mic can have different effects and sound but the end of the day you really have to rely on you're skills as a vocalist.. practicing training etc- too many people rely on auto-tune etc- and tbh.. its ok sometimes but shows a real lack of vocal talent. My friends are great vocalists many where in choir etc as kids so 10-20 years of practicing as artist ''practice makes perfect''.

Archie, thanks for this video. If you had to pick one of these mics that you would recommend the most, regardless of price, which one would it be? I currently am using a Sennheiser 865 S but I'm not really happy with it. Just looking for some direction. Thanks!

Bro thanks for making such great videos. I'm actually confused between the Aston Origin and Rode NT1A. I'm building my home studio where i'll be mostly recoding vocals and guitars for Electronic Dance Music. Can you suggest the best option for me??? I'll be very thankful to you.

Hey Archie, first of all, thanks for this very helpful video from beginners like me. So, I know this is more rare but do you have any recommendations for wind instruments and also a recommendation for female vocals that are on the warmer side? And do you think that there is one mic that can be used moderately well for both vocals and a flute or is that too big of a difference? Thaaaaanks
@archiebeatz
@archiebeatz 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Elizabeth! You are welcome and thank you for watching. Honestly, either of these microphones are great for vocals and woodwind instruments, especially if you are on a budget. As far as warmth, the NT1 and NT1a will give you a little bit more than the others. You just have to play around with the microphone of your choice while getting some experience with it and it willing to find the perfect tone for your liking. I hope this helps!

I've been using the same $180 mic for vocals for 5 years. It's served me well. Not absolute TOP quality but always gets the job done. I just did a comparison to a $5,000 Neumann on my channel. You can watch it now and let me know if you hear the difference!

Watch out! The NT1A and NT1 have different sound signatures. It’s not just about the paint! The silver/grey NT1A has a slight low end and high end air boost. The black NT1(no “a”) is flatter sounding. Both great mics for the money for practically any use.

Hey you should try out the Behringer B2 Pro. It's only 150 bucks. A guy on youtube made a video of how he applied an EQ curve onto it and it sounds very close to a Neumann U87. At least after the KZbin compression, I can't hear much of a difference. It's also multipattern (like the Neumann), and looks a lot like the Neumann. You can look at the spec sheet and it looks very similar to the U87, except that there's a tad more bass and a bigger boost in the mids to highs. It's not bad considering the 20+ time price difference.
