Good list; Islander watches are fantastic. Some other suggestions: The Orient Kamasu is THE diver under $300. The Seiko solar chrono honeycomb (SSC769P1 is the panda) - comes in a ton of colors, sapphire crystal, has the easy pin system for the bracelet, and has the better chrono movement (no stupid 24 hr subdial!). It also wears MUCH smaller than its case size (looks/feels more like a 39mm watch) and usually runs $220- $240. Fantastic value. Next is the Aquatico Dolphin - great size (39mm), all the good specs, good color options, and comes in under $300. Finally, there are plenty of Aliexpress options with ridiculous specs at that price point (San Martin, Cronos, Escapement Time, Seestern, and Baltany are the best-of-the-best imo).

Randy, I love the shoot outs. It is so has the biggest heritage and is Swiss. The others add a lot of value for a small amount of dollars. I look forward to a long-term test to see how they hold up, and wonder about warranty and service costs those watches that may break. Keep up the great work!

My first Swiss watch was the cheapest automatic Tissot they had in a small watch shop in Zurich. I didn't speak Swiss German and he didn't speak English. But he sold me a watch. Was in 2005. Still works great

Best under $300. Once up on a time this would have been Seiko, but they're chasing a different market now and more's the pity. Islander would get my vote now, today. However, if one doesn't mind a (considerable) wait, Helm makes some truly outstanding watches, particularly the Komodo. They're underpriced, but that's how the owner wants them, so they remain a colossal sleeper deal--hence the waiting list.

💯 Seiko has gone the route of Air Jordans by rewarding their loyal customers with ever increasing prices and ever decreasing value & QC. Less for more; sad for customers, great for the board members, I guess. But sh!tting on the customers that made you will eventually alienate them. Thank you, Marc & LIW (and all the micros) for sticking it to Big Watch, giving us buyers the value we deserve.

@@hgr.7857 I don't entirely agree. My experience with Seiko has been quite good. They are, however, trying to move the entire line upscale and leave the entry level to sister-company Orient. I think this is a mistake, but I'm not running the show. Orient makes some very good watches, so there's that.

@@davefinfrock3324 Well, neither of us are wrong. If Seiko wants to pursue a more up-market share, go get 'em. However, along with that should come at least sustained, or ideally, improved quality and workmanship. Like, IDK, maybe try to align the bezel and dial indices. Just a thought. Maybe include sapphire crystal, an upgrade over "Hardlex". Maybe put it on a stock bracelet that has solid endlinks & a decent milled clasp. Just my thoughts. And I know, Orient doesn't do that, but they're selling automatic watches for 100-150 USD. Seiko is asking too much price for not enough product. Just like Jordan Brand. Like you said, fine. Going forward, I'll spend my money with Orient, Long Island Watch, Steeldive, Spinnaker, Dan Henry, Van Banner, Phoibos, etc.

💯 agree about the Islander SKX hands. They leave me decidedly cold. I was fortunate to obtain an ISL21 (emerald 38mm - beautiful) with matching baton hands for hrs & mins and I very much prefer those hands to the Feiko arrows. Am currently wearing an Islander + Spinnaker Croft SE with similar uniform pointed batons. Got a Pan Am 38mm on the way and yeah, it has the corny arrows. Srsly considering trying to swap hands. That'd be the most difficult mod I've attempted, but worth it. Those arrows are just NOT IT. Not a deal breaker bc the watches are outstanding, otherwise. Just "meh".

None of these are best cheap watches under 300. You can get San Martins for less than 300$ the have incredible superior quality to ANY of these. I literally sold more expensive Orients and Seikos for San Martins. You cannot go wrong with it it simply beats mainstream brands watches that cost up to 1000$

I'm guessing you're coming from Cheap Audio Man and just aren't feeling watches the same way? Just like HiFi, watches are not a need at all. Just listen and keep time off your phone. Objectively speaking, both are stupid in that sense. That doesn't mean you can't get enjoyment out of watches (or audio) if that's what you want to spend your money on. And also if you don't "get it," that's totally cool too!
