For long hikes I just use a cheap plastic bottle from the grocery store. It's lightweight and it works even in freezing temperatures. When I'm more in a camping type situation I prefer a metal bottle (stainless steel or titanium) for the reasons you mention. You can cook water in it and it's nearly impossible to damage it. Whereas if I just accidentally step on my plastic bottle it could be a problem.

Using the lid to move the bottle is so solid and i never thought to do that. Thanks

I also try to carry a windproof fire jacket to help protect gas or msr flame too. A piece of aluminium foil can be wrapped into a tube, held at the bottom and top with two big metal paperclips. Baking foil is a bit too thin for this, but one of those discarded portable bbq trays or a disposable tray sold for cooking turkey on can be cut to the right size with scissors and will do the trick.

Were you able to find out if a plastic bottle keeps the warmth longer than metal?

Two thumbs up for the trick with the top! I’ve used my stainless bottle for heating water before, but NEVER thought about that. 👍🏼👍🏼

Plastic (soft for winter). I always have a boiling vessel so do not worry about boiling water with the bottle. One more thing, water in a metal bottle tastes like crap! Just found your channel, like what I see.

Haha, ya your right, water doesn’t taste as good from metal, but I still like the idea that if I absolutely have to I can boil water in it.

It might not taste as good but at least you're not slowly poisoning yourself with xenoestrogens which are found in virtually all plastic (including BPA free)

for me, I am thinking to invest in 32oz stainless stell water bottle for its functionality. I was never able to buy 32oz water bottle but the another trick I am currently using is using a 32oz powerade waterbottle. It at least contains 1 liter but I am trying to think if usgs canteen has a vintage waterbottle for the reason being "the same functionality."

I use a 40 ounce stainless kleen kanteen. And or smart water bottle, with a blue desert hydration tube I got off Amazon. When I use a hydration pack, I have a 3.0 litre Giegerrig.

Superb video sir. I have a 32oz Stainless Backpacker Nalgene which works great over a heat source and in the fire with the aid of a fish mouth spreader, I also like the 40oz Kleen Kanteen in stainless. Both bottles nest well and can be stored inside a Condor h2o pouch. Thank you. Paul :)

The only thing I don't like about it is the lid. If I were camping, and I had no gas / propane stove, I would want to put it in the fire. And rubber or plastic lids.. melt.

Ya, I’ve run into that... I boil without the lid but you need a good glove to get it off the fire, so the full metal option is definitely best!
