Hi Shaun. I did the same as you. In 2121 I planted in tyres (terrible!) In 2022 in big 25kg buckets (bit better) this year I bought the 5 different varieties form you to test which one I liked the most and planted in my raised beds of 1*3m * 3. WOW did I get a harvest. I found the Tyson my best and biggest harvest. Next year I'm doing Tyson, El Mundo and the Russet. Thank you so much for this video as it confirmed all my findings. Maria

Thank you for this video. I grew your seed potatoes in tyre's, the amount of potatoes I harvested was so little I didn't think it was worth my time to try again. I thought I'd done something wrong. Now I will be growing my own in 2024.

Love the video! The problem I have with tires beyond the above reasons , is that usually they're old, and picked up things like heavy metals, oils, pfas and you name it. There's several clinical studies relating crum rubber in playgrounds made from tires, and all kinds of disease, lymphoma.
@LivingseedsFarm9 ай бұрын
Absolutely. The petrochemical load in old tyres can be concerning.
@mangeza74529 ай бұрын
Very informative video thank you! Quick question do you do anything to prevent bugs and pests from getting to your potatoes plants or was this just prep soil and plant ?
@LivingseedsFarm9 ай бұрын
Nice question. We prepped the soil specifically for potatoes. Pest control consisted of 4x sprays for Potato Ladybug using a mix Biogrow Pyrol and Bioneem at 50% strength. Other than that we had no other pest issues.

Thanks for this question. Very helpful 🙏🙏
@ruthlongridge21379 ай бұрын
This was very interesting. I wonder how much haybale mulch would have an effect around the tyres, buckets, and wire - as it would insulate them like the soil does. I would also like to see you using the same growing medium for all the trials, IMO this should be the case if the trial is 100% fair.
@LivingseedsFarm9 ай бұрын
Yeah. Not sure. It’s not something we will try. Mainly as we are more interested in finding the simplest way to grow the most food.

What was the soil type for the ground planted potatoes? Is it worth buying germination soil to plant potatoes? Do you mix the germination soil with normal soil?
@LivingseedsFarm8 ай бұрын
We use our standard garden soil. Don’t buy special soil, rather look at using the money to buy a quality mulch to cover your soil.
@iekmoloi7 ай бұрын
Great video, thank you. How do you spread your 2:3:2 in?

We just spread it on the soil. The Talborne organics will work itself in.

Hi Sean great video. What % shade cloth do you recommend to use so your vegetables don't burn from the sun and wind. Anthony from South Africa Western Cape
@LivingseedsFarm9 ай бұрын
Hey Anthony. It depends on the colour. Lighter fabrics can go to a higher % to exclude pests. Darker fabrics should run a lower %. Typically 30% green or blue is sufficient in high radiation areas. In the flip side. Excluding pests also excludes beneficial insects as well. Hope this helps.

Hi Sean. I see you only have Tyson seed potatoes available this year. In your catalogue you don't specify any varieties, but... Man, oh man, does that accompaning picture make me want to grow potatoes! When can we expect redskin & purple varieties from you guys?
@LivingseedsFarm9 ай бұрын
We are currently experiencing a seed potato shortage. So we only have Tyson. Coloured potatoes are in production and we are hoping for a small release in Spring depending on the harvest.

Hi which potatoes Variety are best for frying chips and to make potato curry ?
@johnnyvorster46449 ай бұрын
Awesome learning from you. Thank you so much!. We ordered the 5 different varieties, and have now started harvesting. While Mr Mole had his fair share of the spoils, we are harvesting lovely, healthy potatoes. Questions... how best to store the potatoes to enable maximum usage (outside of the garden), and do we take the potatoes which have started growing and immediately replant them? May we plant them in the same bed? What do we need to look out for in a seed potato?
@LivingseedsFarm9 ай бұрын
Only a pleasure. Storage is best in a cool dry place. Don’t wash before storing. You can replant immediately if they are sprouting. Replanting as seed potatoes should be fine for a year or two as long as you don’t experience any transferable diseases. It is however always best to buy new seed potatoes every season. But I do understand the need to save money. Seed potatoes go through a rigorous testing with inspections and laboratory testing to ensure quality, not something you can do on a home level.

Did you "hill" the potatoes in the tyres? Topping them up as they grow? Or did you have it full of vermicompost from the start? I've had more success with "topping them up as they grow"
@LivingseedsFarm9 ай бұрын
They were planted in the first tyre and once they had grown we added the second tyre and topped up.

Hi. I heard that you should not grow potatoes in the same soil year on year - is this correct? Or can we use the same beds more than once for the potatoes?
@LivingseedsFarmАй бұрын
It's always a good idea to rotate your planting spot for potatoes. Sometimes it's not possible, so make sure you are purchasing potatoes from a certified source to reduce your chances of disease transmission. www.livingseeds.co.za/vegetable-seeds/potatoes

The only time I don't grow in the ground is during the late winter season that I start and early crop in the greenhouse when the outside soil is covered in snow and frozen. At that time of year I grow in a cardboard box sitting on soil in the greenhouse.

Thank you for your comment. Please can you elaborate on your cardboard box method. Is this a way to start them early in spring to transplant? Or is it an actual growing method.
