For anyone that's interested, it's a gearbox inside the tool. It turns your hand crank into huge torque. Putting your drill on it won't help as those can produce up to 2000ft/lbs just with your hand alone. Also, you'll shatter the gear box with an impact or drill. HF sells one, tried it; Gearbox locked up. Probably from the friction since it isn't designed to be turned at 1200RPM lol Also, if you need an impact on a torque multiplier, I'm pretty sure whatever you're removing is welded haha

That's an awesome tool Gordon, thanks for sharing! If I was still working at the craphole I'd be all over that. For _years_ we did it the manual way which meant cheaters and pipe wrenches. Back in the 80's I had a 66 VW beetle and was doing a brake job on it. The rear wheels were held on with a 36mm nut I believe it was and it refused to come off. My Dad and I had tried all the usual stuff like heat, a six foot cheater pipe on a breaker bar, standing on the pipe, jumping on the pipe. With the car on the ground the wheel was turning. The neighbor across the street had been watching this and came over with a air tank from a welder and an air impact wrench. He put that on there and literally in a flash it spun that nut completely off. Now THAT was a power tool.

This is the exact one I've used for years and it works every time. It was expensive no lie about that but it gets the job done. For those who think they'll speed the job up by putting a hammer action impact gun on this tool, don't even think it as this is not designed for that. You'll shatter the internals doing so and $250 ($189 in 2021) will go bye-bye. Sweat equity and some muscle works just fine with this tool. Once I break the nut torque, then I use my Milwaukee M18 Fuel 1" inch impact to finish the job. I've had a few nut/bolts that would not break loose with an air-powered 1" impact but this "red colored" 1:65 ratio CheaterWrench works every time.

I have one of these for my boom truck. Just discovered it about a year ago and they're great! Before that I improvised with a 10' x 1 1/2" iron pipe cheater on a huge breaker bar. The amazing thing is that even with all that leverage it was still pretty hard to break 'em loose! Absolutely an incredible amount of stubbornness stored in those damn lugs! Gotta be real careful with keeping the left and right hand threads straight though!
@CPUDOCTHE15 жыл бұрын
That looks like it would come in handy. We removed the rear rims from a tractor one time. There were 8 bolts that were 7/8" in diameter. in each rim I used a 1 5/16" socket on the 3/4" break over and had a 6' cheater on the break over. About 1/2 of the nuts took the bolt threads off with the nut. It was 31 degrees F at the time (was doing it outside). I was down to my jeans and t-shirt by the time I got done with the 16 bolts.

Torque multipliers are pretty nice. I have one at work, a large Proto rated to 5000 ft lbs. Grainger list it for over $6k. The fasteners we use it on only torque to 927 ft lbs, so a bit oversized. The ratio requires 36 ft lbs from our torque wrench to get to 927.

I have both tools like you do- Milwaukee impact and cheater wrench and it took me a while to get to the point where I combined them both using 1" to 3/4" reducer and it worked out great:) no need to crank that thing using Milwaukee wrench instead with the reducer. I went even further and tried my home cordless drill with that torque multiplier (cheater wrench) and to my surprise it did brake the lug nut loose. That torque multiplier has 58:1 gear ratio (if I'm not mistaken) so basically all you need is 10 ft-lbs torque source(10×58=580ft-lbs) and that cheater wrench to brake nuts loose:) btw the 1"to3/4" reducer should be there in your cheater wrench set

You said it was the last one that you had to bring the hot wrench out for you to remove. The tool you used here are awesome as all heck, but if you are using an impact and it won't get the nut off and its the last one left or just a stuck one SOMETIMES if you put the two nuts on either side back on and snug them up pretty good the stuck one will break loose because the other two help take some of the pressure off of it. It has worked for me in the past once or ten times, lol. That tool is ideally what you want to use so no damage happens to threads or something but in a pinch this works sometimes.
@GordonRobertsonDIY5 жыл бұрын
You're right, sometimes 2 nuts on either side will help but couldn't do it here, after oiling the 1" impact and around and around and oiling up the other 1" impact and the same thing, I just got it red hot and then the impact got it off. Impact wrench is what everybody uses, you may want to estimate torque by giving each lug nut a certain amount of time of impact hammering after the nut first is seated and then check with a torque wrench to see if you should hammer longer or less.

Have had the six 22.5 wheels off, and put back on the W-22 twice in the last two months, once for new tires, 2nd time for brakes and new differential seals. Each time, the shops used the Big impact. Of course, doing it all day long, every day, they know how long to 'thump' the lug nuts.

peterbilt sells these, not cheap but they work and very portable pair great with cordless impact

I'm sure Peterbilt is very proud of their tool, that's why I put a link in the description to where I bought mine. Thanks for watching.

I have some of those tools, they call them Torque Multipliers, if my memory is correct. The two I own are Mac Tools, if memory is correct, or they could be Snap-On. One of mine is half inch input and three quarter output, the other is three quarter input. I don't use them anymore, but if I needed one I can dig them out. Rarely used but a must have, that is pretty much the rule with specialty tools. I bought the ones I have in the late seventies. They likely still sell them, just ask the friendly neighborhood tool man.

I got this from Amazon for $150 I'm sure Snap-on or Mac would be happy to sell me one just a little bit better for at least $1000 or more. Thanks for watching.

I usually do breath heavy right after exerting myself physically but I can still do plenty of push-ups, pull-ups, run and jump and I'm in my 60's. Thanks for watching.

Good video, this might sound like a dumb question but this is all new to me, how do you put the wheel back on with the cheater ranch and knowing The correct tension ? Thank you
@GordonRobertsonDIY4 жыл бұрын
I'll have to do a video on that some day when I have time. Better to just use a torque wrench to tighten them until I can do a video.

There is a DURHAND Torque Multiplier Wrench Labor Saving Lug Nut Set W/7 Cr-V Socket listed in the similar items portion. It's $62.00 and lists the tool as being Alloy Steel and Carbon Steel, so it might be a viable option, and it includes several lugnuts.

If they are put together right with neva sieze and correct torque to begin with this doesn't happen. Before the bud wheels moose nuts would over tighten lugs and twuck dwiver gets a load. Heading down the pike at 50mph and spacer ring collapses and its off to the rough at full send. No thank you please.

You could also use your impact cordless to turn cheater tool. Since it’s not under as much stress now. What you think?

hi and great video, I own a light 2.4 ton cargo truck and always have issues removing the lug nuts, I managed to remove the front ones but the duel rear wheels are a pain in the you know where and now I just cant get them loose. I would love this tool that you are using in the video as it would give me peace of mind when in a remote area and had a flat tire. I Checked Amazon but they do not ship this item to New Zealand so back to the drawing board have seen something similar here but cost 1-2K.

It's called a torque multiplier for lug nuts. If you Google that I'm sure you will find something in your area maybe on Ebay.

I am impressed with that tool . we have the Milwaukee impacts in the shop now us them most of the time but we still check all lug nuts with the 1 inch air and a torque stick . AS you pointed out if your battery drops so does your power the one inch Milwaukee is a awesome piece of equipment from my experience with it the 1 inch would have taken those lug nut off. It seems to develop more torque to remove then tighten

The 1/2" impact is more that enough to tighten and loosen if they're not over tightened. They're supposed to be tightened to 450 ft lbs but usually end up with over 1000 ft lbs when the shops use the 1" and keep hammering until it just about stops moving. Much higher risk of studs breaking than coming loose. I looked at a few reviews on those torque sticks and quickly lost interest when I found how unreliable they are and how they vary from impact to impact. I just give mine about 1 to 1-1/2 seconds after contact with my 3/4 drive air impact, now I'll be using a 600 lb torque wrench to test the 1/2" and the 3/4" battery impacts to find out the best way to leave the lugs with those wrenches and do a video on that.

@@GordonRobertsonDIY we never had a problem but we have had some looen on steel rims and ruin the rims of course . Not sure but we are mostly working tandem dump trucks and not over the road trucks and a lot of the drivers are not to concerned about taking it easy in rough roads

The Milwaukee electric impact and that torque multiplier are nice toys for sure. What would you think about a hex nut on the torque multiplier in place of the crank handle so you could use an electric impact instead or the hand crank? Haven’t seen you mention lube the lug nuts joint (not the threads)

Use never-seize on lugs/nuts when you put it together and it will save a lot of trouble and wear, put a little around the center hole too. Very cool simple tool though.
@heytasker5 жыл бұрын
One drop of oil at the start of the threads and one drop on the nut's washer, that's all you need. Grease gives a faulty torque reading plus once the oil bleeds out it just gets gloppy.

PERMATEX ANTI-SEIZE
@kevinj.mitchellft31235 жыл бұрын
Ant seize does not negatively affect torque vs clamping pressure, if anything it helps, a rusty stick set of threads will use some of the applied torgue to overcome friction cheating you out of clamping force, antiseize restores that to a closer to new level and provides lasting protection that oils and grease don't. I've been a heavy truck and auto and marine mechanic for 40 years.

instead of using the crank handle couldnt you use a drill on the torque multiplier?

Looks great. Only problem I foresee is using different sockets that didn't come with the set. If they're not the same length as the bracing foot on the tool it may be a problem. ??
@GordonRobertsonDIY5 жыл бұрын
Most deep well sockets are pretty close in length, just measure or bring one along when looking for a new socket.

get a 8 point socket 3/4 drive to fit your torque multiplier and you won't even break a sweat.

@MotorcycleMan 8 point sockets fit square heads. like pipe plugs. handy to have work better than trying to use like a adjustable wrench or a open end wrench. i don't have any metric ones so i guess i should look at getting some metric ones.look them up.
