Getting help from a friend as we are making more dust by removing the lath and plaster in two bedrooms. We make easy work with a new more efficient technique.
Our goal is to restore the house and that involves fixing damaged areas. Unfortunately we still have a few more rooms to clean up before we can start to put our house back together!
If you enjoy renovation videos then hit the SUBSCRIBE button as we are uploading a video of our Victorian remodel every week.
Thanks for Watching.

We were really excited to see some 50-100 old pictures and a letter behind the mantle.

After demoing many plaster and wood lath walls and ceilings, I’ve found it much easier to first remove the plaster and then remove the wood lath. It’s much easier to clean up debris as opposed to trying to clean plaster and lath combined.

Did you test for asbestos before removing the plaster and lath?

Did you ventilate air out a window when you did it? Were about to start the remodel on my grandparents 1890 farm house i have 2 kids so was a little hesitant on the possibility of lead or asbestos. Were gonna do it one room at a time

Great question. We did have all the windows open. As far as asbestos goes in plaster you should most likely be good. It was used in covering vent stacks and usually only in plaster in commercial buildings for elevator or other fireproofing spots. As far as lead goes, I would recommend covering entrances to the rooms with plastic and cleaning off inside first. We washed our cloths separately from our kids and general clothing during the removal times. Just make sure to vacuum well with HEPA filters before letting the kids into those rooms again and moping!

Please tell me what is best respirator for this type work
@TirolerInn

We enjoyed the one we are using because it also covers the eyes but a over mouth and nose one is fine too if you use safety glasses. The make is less important than the filters. I would recommend N100/P100 filters as the also filter the micro particles. The size will depend on the type of respirator you are using, some are cans, flat packs like we have or even cartridges.

Did you have load bearing walls and did you work around it?

We did. We only took down one load bearing wall and we added a big header in.

Dreading doing this to my house... lol. Thankfully the entire floorplan is only around 900 sq. feet including an addition that is only drywalled.
