This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. I've just always put a loop in my line, tie it off with an overhand knot, then created a larks head with the loop and main line, slip that over the spool (with the bail open), close the spool and then start reeling. If the larks head loop just slides around the spool, it's on backwards. Not a big deal, just open the bail, take it back off of the spool and flip it over. Sounds more complicated than it really is. I could do 4 or 5 in the time it takes to do this.

The knot at the spool isn't really important. Ive even used tape to stick my line to my spool. If your concerned you might get spooled you aren't using the correct equipment for the specific fish you are after. For me the most important aspect of your spool knot is the size of the knot and how it lays. A big knot can really screw up how your line lays and spools on and off the reel. Just my 2 cents.

I also use tape and been doing it for 50 years. I take duct tape because it has a tiny bit of cushion or depth to prevent the line from slipping, then u can use any sensible knot that is not very big so it will not interfere with any other line wraps. Just take a few inches of duct tape and split it with scissors the approximate width of the bottom of the spool, and then wrap it around the spool core trying to get just one full wrap and that none or very little of the tape is up the side of the spool. Btw the reel I use and the best I have ever owned in 50 years of fishing. Diawa Fuego LT 3000 D-C and 4000D-C. Got 6 of them and use them exclusively in salt water and brackish water for fish up to 15 lb so far.

That honking big knot is going to leave a honking big hump on your spooled up line when you finish. My suggestion is don`t worry so much about the knot. A granny knot will do just fine because you are never going to get to the end of your spooled up line and if you do, you have way more problems than the knot. A good snug knot, wind the line onto the reel with some tension, fill to the correct level, and you are set to go fishing. It isn`t rocket science, it is just common sense.

I hear a lot of guys say that it doesn't matter what knot you tie because if you get spooled no knot is going to hold the fish but that seems like a ridiculous argument. Recently watched a video from Bali guy in light tackle get totally spooled and the final wrap came off as if it didn't even have a knot. He was in a traditional long fishing boat and the captain wasn't able to turn the boat quickly to chase down. Also he was trying to control the fish with drag setting only, never palming the spool to put pressure on the fish. So, everything wrong but I believe if he'd tried breaking with his hand and the skipper could have turned the boat a little sooner he would have had a chance if he had a proper knot tied to the spool.

Yes, but if you are using thinner mono, pull on it after & watch what happens. A uni-knot pulled the direction in the way it doesn't slip, unfortunately breaks with little effort. It doesn't matter much, cos if you ever get down to this little line, you're stuffed anyway, but it isn't strong with thinner, say under 8kg line.
