Hello, when I started using braided line, I started to see several knots to tie the leader and among all the fishermen they always gave me a different one, but one day a good friend He told me to use the fg knot, I can assure you that the leader is finished first before it bursts, from then on it is the only knot I use for that, and I am already very skilled at doing it. Greetings from Durango Mexico

Greetings from Australia. I am a huge fan of getting the most out of my braid by using the thinnest diameter of light braids and light leaders for estuary fishing. I also bulk spool purchased a ton of "4lb" Fireline years ago so this is what I will use until it all gets worn out and thrown away. New 4lb Fireline used to break at 16ish lbs tension before knotting so to say it is overkill is an understatement. I, too used to use a double uni knot long ago to attach the 4lb braid to 8lb fluorocarbon and yeah it use to fail at the uni knot at around 4-5 lbs every time. Then I learned how to tie the FG knot by using the technique of holding the braid at tension ( with the rod in a rod holder in my kayak and the end of the braid between my teeth) This method works fine for me with such thin braids. Now, because of perfecting the tying of the FG knot whilst kayaking, I am getting the rig to fail at 8lbs when the flurocarbon lets go. If you struggle to tie FG knots using one technique, try another until you find one that works for you. There is no shortage of KZbin how to clips to learn the various methods. It is well worth putting in the time to perfect the knot in the comfort of your own home, and once competent, you can even tie it in a pitching kayak pretty quickly.

You have successfully proven what I, and many other anglers have known for a while. The FG is the best knot. Hands down, without a doubt, absolute stone-cold best. And, it's also the thinnest knot so it passes through the guides better too. Pain in the ass to learn, to be sure, but it's the best one. 👍🇺🇸

Enjoyed the video, and it’s a great addition to the other knot and line strength videos you’ve done. I have used all three of these knots in the past, but I’ve been using the Alberto exclusively for about the last year and will continue to do so, here’s why. It’s way stronger than the double uni, and way easier to tie than the FG knot. I don’t see the alberto knot breaking at a lower percentage of line strength than the FG knot as a big problem and here’s why. All the Alberto knots broke north of 90%. In your fluoro to bait knot test, your own data showed that the best of the seven knots tested got just over 88%. It would seem that’s the weak link. That’s just my take on it. Keep up the great content.

Also, what people need to realize aplication matters, diaamitar, and the situation you are tieing in. If you are on a boat needing to tie fast in a pinch. What is easy for you. If you using 50 lb braid to 60lb mono like I do for deep see, you not tieing that by hand easy. I can but that x8 braid will cut your hand up. I tie P.E. for that to junk big baits for bigger fish., jigging, and any heavy application. On my light rig, I will use Alberto knots, or FG they don't very much in streng in real world application.

Always nice to learn something new, however, if your current knot is reliable for you switching to something different just might not be worth it. The learning curve on getting a reliable FG knot is pretty steep and it's one of those knot that if it isn't tied right, will just fall apart. Once you've got it right, it's stronger than the line, but you can't get it wrong.

Tyler, love the channels and all of the great content. Continued success!!! The key is a good reel with a smooth drag. So you do not have to find the breaking point. A couple of summers ago on my 7’ med/fast, moderate action finesse setup 10lb braid to 8lb floro, hooked and landed a 38” Striper while bass fishing. Connection knot was an old school blood knot. Your results are exactly what I thought they would be. I use the Alberto for most all of my bass fishing when tying similar line diameters together and I have had pretty much zero knot failures. I only tie the FG knot for all of my heavy fluoro leaders when I'm Pike fishing. Both have served me well. It would have been nice to test some of the other knots out there to compare to. Like the GT knot some guys swear by and the Albright a lot of guys still tie. Even a blood knot, I know guys that swear that is the strongest knot you can tie, Knot that I believe that LOL

Something I saw on a small scale somewhere was a test on fluorocarbon RE-stretch. That video showed how much better mono was on second and third pulls NEAR TO breakage strength vs fluoro which tended to maintain very little strength by the second pull. It would be interesting to see a more comprehensive study-especially since you already know the best lines and knots. Just goes to show the importance of fresh fluorocarbon and fresher knots. (Especially for those folks that love to use a crankbait clip all day and never retie! 😅) Great seeing you briefly on Sunday!

Every knot will differ between different individuals tying the knot and also the make of the line and whether you lubed the knot or didn't lube it…. Everyone will have different results overall… I must say... The FG knot has been my go-to knot regardless of whether fishing in salt or freshwater… it's the knot of less resistance through the guides… After using the FG knot in the surf has proved superior for my needs... 80lb. Braid to 80lb. top shot/shock mono leader( about 50’) and I still cast 150 yards no problem and no problem through the guides… Superglue coating on your FG knot will make it slick as slug snot… 👍😎👌

I use the German knotless wire connector called "verbindung knotless" for braid to fluoro, reports says that is 90% strong with the advantage of not need to tie a knot, only disadvantage is that the wire cannot go in most the guides. Regarding your experiment, the key to FG knot is the user expertise on tying the knot, which requires sometime. The other thing on FG is that it only works on diameters where fluoro or mono are bigger than the braid, in my experience. Nonetheless great video!

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The knot is easy to tie and simply works for me and 8 only use it on my spinning rods for wacky rig and core tackle fluke rig. I switched to FG from Uni to Uni last year. The difference was stunning. Goes through the guides smoother and noticeably stronger. Also, I felt like I would mess-up the uni-to-uni sometimes and not know it until it broke off really easily. The FG is a hard knot to learn, but once you knot it its not bad to tie, and it will be obvious if you do it wrong.

Here is a notable result based on your testing: there appears to be a direct correlation between the ratio of braid to leader diameters such that as the ratio approaches zero, all of the knots get stronger. The first test was 50 lb braid to 20 lb leader which is about 0.014” and 0.016” depending on brands. That’s a ratio of 1:1.143 or 87.5%. The braid diameter was 87.5% of the flouro diameter. Second test: 30lb to 16lb; about 0.012” to 0.014” or 1:1.167 or 85.7%. A smaller ratio. Third test: 10lb to 10lb; about 0.008” to 0.011” or 1:1.375 or 72.7% As the ratio of the diameters approaches zero the knots get stronger. Love to hear the explanation for that.
@Ben-kd8tp
@Ben-kd8tp 7 ай бұрын
It is not immediately apparent but it’s not a direct linear correlation - that would be impossible. It therefore must be a parabolic correlation. Take this example: It is clear that if you hold the braid diameter constant and increase the diameter of the flouro, knot strength improves. Likewise, holding flouro diameter constant and decreasing braid diameter has the same effect. But since a braid with diameter zero would result in no knot at all, therefore 0% break strength, one could assume that it is a gradual transition to 0% break strength. The diameter sizes in your experiment saw an increase in strength as the ratio of diameters approached zero but there must be a point at which it levels off and then knots start becoming weaker. That theory would mean that there is a parabolic correlation and therefore, because a parabola has a peak, there is an “ideal” flouro diameter for “X” diameter of braid. I think this will make for and interesting experiment and I for one would love to see it. You could find the “ideal” leader size to maximize line strength- putting aside the obvious advantages of running a particular size leader for the sake of science.

Great test and well orchestrated. Some questions 1. Since the FG knot did not break, do you think you should just say it's greater than 100% and leave it at that? The reported values are only telling you about the break strength of 20lb floro. 2. Is knot strength or knot reliability the bigger issue? Perhaps knots failing and line's breaking is the problem on the water. If the double-uni consistently gives 15lbs of break strength and does not fail, it might be a good choice since it is almost certainly stronger than the drag and the leader if it has any nicks. 3. I use FG knots, which are amazingly strong but occasionally fail. Should I switch to double-uni which is never amazingly strong but almost never fails?

Tyler in these series of knot videos where youve been tied amd testdd could you do a video showing how you tied the knots in the videos from this series the braid and floros as well especially like youve said before the quality of that knot will make a 50% difference.... Quality or can get 100% and + if tied correctly on some? There are alot of videos cashing in on how they tie but if your fan base wants to achieve the same results would like the same version of those knots tested.

This is why I only use the FG. Great video Tyler and thank you for verifying that I am on the right path ;)

Love that you tie the fg the same way I do and it is still so strong. No need to use your teeth to get that strength.

I use the uni to uni with great success, I very the number of wraps depending on the line. I almost always use a 10# braid main line and very the leader strength between 6# to 20# so the leader wraps very from 6 to 3 because thicker line needs less wraps. I'm interested to see if that makes the difference I think it does, and if it matters. Test the uni to uni but include the connecting knots to the lure. I usually use a nonslip loop knot, unit knot, clench knot, palamar, ect and it always breaks at one of those instead of the leader knot, so I haven't bothered to learn another connecting knot.

Getting into braid and lead glad to knot have bad habits or bias to knots I already know. FG will be the one I learn and stick with right off the bat ❤

I love the alberto but with my experience it tend to slip off maybe because I dudn't overlap the line properly when tying or not tighting it properly but sometime just by tighting it the fluro carbon snap. Also, maybe it knot come undone or maybe it's the coating on the line, I don't know. sometime just by casting my whole leader slip through and I lost everything ( when finishing retie fresh knot, hooks, and bait). I was using a 20 lb reaction tackle high performance fishing gear to Seaguar BASIX 20lb Fluorocarbon I used the alberto knot on J-braid to the Seaguar too and it slip sometime too so I am done with the alberto knot and use the double uni knot or the gt knot love the fg knot but I cant tie that knot out in the water

Great video, since line is only as strong as the weakest link, what is the advantage of using say 50 lb braid with a 14 lb leader. Have you all ready done a video on what type lures or conditions can you use straight braid with no leader with? Thanks for the great informative videos.

How many wraps were you using on the uni, and do you think more wraps would change the results?

Can you test flouro knots against shock like from the hookset there are certain knots and certain flouros that struggle on the hookset even tho they are abrasion resistant or high weight breaking strength.

I have seen tests where the FG was not tied properly and broke in the middle of the pack. You have clearly tied those FGs properly! Awesome.

Fantastic video!!! I tried the FG but gave up. Been using the Alberto due to having issues with the double uni using really thin braid line. Got snagged the other day with the Alberto and I had one hell of a time snapping the line. Pretty much the same when i get snagged with the double uni. I figure with that and using my drag properly and a net I won't ever have issues but I may try again on the FG. It looks thinner and like it would go through the guides smoother

Here is the part I think we might be overlooking. tests like this are fun to see how knots fair but at the end of the day, is even the weakest knot in testing still more than strong enough to handle the amount of pressure even the biggest of bass can put on the knot (if tied correctly). In a sense is the FG overkill. don't get me wrong, if you love the strength the FG knot provides and choose to use it by all means do so, but if you love maybe the Alberto Knot, it is still plenty strong enough to handle the pressure any size bass could put on it (if tied correctly). After trying them all I settled on the Modified Albright knot (strong, easy to tie, very small knot). It has never failed me in all my years of using it. Would it be beaten in a strength test like this by other knots? probably so, but that would not make me abandon it for the stronger knots.

Ive had so much luck with the double uni and have been using it for 30 years. Guess I need to give a new knot a try. FG will be the one I try first.

I love ur tests! I see some scientist envy under that Bass hat!! I'll keep tying my Alberto on the water but this makes me want to set stuff up pre game with the FG. Does it get thru the micro guides?

Great info, but im curious with the nature of the double uni knot how the fluorocarbon cinches down on itself, did you wet the line before cinching? I assume you did, but that would obviously cause premature failure if it wasn't.

Great content and solid facts! Thank you!! I would like to see you compare the Carrot knot to the FG knot. The Carrot knot looks like it would be better but looks can be deceiving.

On the double uni though how many knots are you doing on each side? I feel like the more loops you do on each side the stronger it gets but I guess I'm maybe off based on that.

I really liked this video! Great information to us. 2 questions. 1) how many times do you wrap your alberto knot? I usually go up 7 wraps come back 7 wraps. 2) do you have a video on how to tie a FG knot? Ive watched a lot of FG knot videos on youtube and the only video that helped me was by Chris Zaldain because he put the camera on his head i think, giving me his POV angle that helped me. I can kind of tie a FG knot, but to me the time/effort it takes is not worth the strength results I just saw on your video. If u have time, how many wraps on your alberto knot and if u have fg knot video or know of a good one i can learn a simple method to tie that dam knot.
