For sure TIGHTEN IT DOWN. I cannot stress that enough lol. As a new woodworker, I used a router for the first time and I almost did what the say in the movie Christmas Story, "you'll shoot your eye out." Thank God it went past my head and not through it. At 27,000 RPM, that thing flew off faster than a jet, hit a few walls and by the time I found the bit, it was bent. Thanks for the video!!

You, my friend, are an exceptional instructor. I’m retired military and retired law enforcement....my experience is that in both of my careers, the best instructors were those that assumed nothing of their class, and taught to the most ignorant student. Since I retired, I’ve developed an interest in woodworking....I had no idea what a “router” was. That said, I recently inherited my wife’s father’s tools (those that his numerous sons and daughters didn’t want). While I didn’t get his router, I did get 20+ quality router bits. I almost took them to Goodwill...but now watching your video, has me thinking seriously about buying a router. I appreciate how you talked “to” -- not “at”-- the camera...you actually reminded me of some of my favorite Officers--especially with those blue “tactical” specs!!! Nice job....Bravo-Zulu on your presentation, AND your on-camera persona! (Now, to talk my wife, who still works, into how I “need” another power tool!!)

Thanks for the router video. I'm currently turning an acoustic Baby Grand Piano into a Digital one by installing a Digital keyboard into the shell of an early 1900s Baby Grand piano. However, I'm remaking the Fallboard because the Digital Keyboard is deeper than the original keyboard so the old Fallboard doesn't fit. Anyway, I'm no carpenter but I am able to pull things off sometimes. Your video is going to help me as I wanted to round over the front edge of my Fallboard. I'm hoping to learn how to use the router for more things as well. I may not be a newby to power tools but I still learn more with every project I do. Thank you again. Having professionals like you who are willing to help those of us who want to learn how to diy is such an awesome thing and so generous of you to share your knowledge and skill.

I know plenty of people that were scared off of routers as they were never shown how to use it, the first time it pulled them across the wood they gave up, all due to running in the wrong direction, it's sad really as routers are so versatile and because of that well worth the investment.

Thank you for the informative video. Wood working is completely new to me but with COVID-19 to keep from going crazy I am picking up new skills. I have never used a router. It was just recently when I picked up a Hitachi 10" table saw and Metabo 12" miter side slide. Recently after looking at a number of KZbin videos I made a 6' high and 5' tall set of storage shelves for the first time and put it together with 16d nails and finally went to 3 1/4 torx screws and it was all made from old fencing material so I ripped the 4x4's to make 2x4's and used the cedar fence boards for the shelves.

I have recently purchased a router. They have always intimidated me, but your video simplified things wonderfully. I have a 2” x 3” x 8’ piece of wood that I want/need to round to make a railing down into my basement. In the past, I would have crudely rounded it with my palm sander, but now? Now I am actually going to take that big brute out of its snug plastic home and give it a whirl. Now my router has both a fixed and a plunge base. I have no idea which I should be using, but will google that before jumping in. Thanks for the really solid video, and yes, I did subscribe. Cheers.

I have that same router, the kit with the plunge base, great deal! I usually do a light climb cut first, because if you try cutting with the forward direction of the arrow all in one pass you very often can tear a chunk right out if the grain in the board happens to angle towards the edge. Another option is use a larger bearing first, then switch to the smaller bearing and do it in 2 passes if there's any doubt about the grain direction. That bearing people have to make sure will ride on the edge of the board, if it's too low or high there's little to stop it from digging right into the board. Those bearings need to be checked a lot and lubricated, because they DO come apart, the bearings inside are so tiny, that when they wear out or burn up the whole thing comes apart and you might not even notice until your cut edge suddenly starts veering off into the board ruining it, keep them lubed, let the bearing cool between cuts, dont really PUSH hard against it either. The holding screw can also come loose so make sure its TIGHT!

Another beginner tip: In addition to wearing eye protection when running any power tool and many non-powered tools, it's wise to get a pair of electronic earmuffs (like you might use at the indoor pistol range), and wear them when running most power tools. Routers, saws, jointers, and so forth. Unlike dumb muffs or earplugs, you can hear what's going on around you, people talking, etc, so you're less tempted to take them off as often. Much like a finger or an eye, once your hearing goes, you're not getting it back.

I love woodwork eversince I did basic woodwork at school but didn’t learn to use any other tools until afterwards due to health and safety. I did work experience at The Doyle Centre which was in Exmouth in Devon only to then be very sadly knocked down by some builders. There I learnt to finally use a drill and even did basic plumbing, Sparex Tractor Parts packaging training. And even gardening, cookery and other things like doing meals like tuna and pasta bake ect. Most of them were disabled there so only the rest of us who were abledly people could use things like drills and other tools.

Vince, great video but a few thoughts. The reason why you loop the cord over your shoulder is to avoid the cord potentially being chewed up by the router - it happened once to me. It's kind of terrifying when your router sparks because the cord got caught. I do that for that reason. Second, you do the direction of the arrow to avoid having the router take off on you. That's incredibly dangerous esp. with 3hp routers. Finally, I always use a test piece instead of the actual piece when I do router work but those are my thoughts.

Hey Cool, thank you for your quick response. I actually did watch the entire video initially and after your message I did go back and watch that specific part a few more times. I think what might be helpful to me and I imagine by extension, to many others as well might really be for another video but one which I really hope you can make. I feel that I could’ve learned so much more about the router operation by knowing how the bit itself actually works and cuts. For example if before you perform the actual demonstration you have the bit out of the chuck and holding it so you can show: this is the part that glides along your piece and this is the part that does the actual cut into the wood and perhaps showing some more intricate bits and demonstrate the cuts they make in kind of a series on router bits and how to make particular jobs easier with the right router bit! Hey, sounds like you could make a nice little series of it and maybe pick up some router bit sponsors. In the meantime I am subscribing to see what else I can absorb from you. I’m retired now with extra time to fill and I always liked making things and fixing or refinishing things. I can’t really afford all the tools I need but I do have a pretty good homeowner collection of tools: table saw, jigsaw, circular saw, drill, hammer drill, dremel, compound mitre saw..... But No Router! Have a Happy New Year! Luke
